Very nice job on the hammer. A thick weight training belt is a good source of leather for replacing the stack on this type of handle, one belt does 2 Estwings if you don't waste any leather.

In 1961 my dad had one of those chrome plated lighters you could re-fill with lighter fluid fall out of his shirt pocket in a field when he was fixing his seed drill. In 1984 while he was cultivating that same piece of ground, he spotted It, and stopped the tractor and picked it up. It was a rusty piece of junk; but he found it after 23 years of farming that field.

I make knives. I'm not wild about stacked leather handles. I've made a few. My trick to keep them from drying out and getting loose. John, I’m about to take the dive and buy a fiber wheel. Rookie question; could a guy use that fiber wheel on that tinners hammer handle or are they only for metal work? That thing turned out great!
@ScoutCrafter5 ай бұрын
I’ve used the fiber wheel on different things with mixed results. The belt sander really works good on the leather handle. Same thing they use at the factory. The fiber wheel is really good for getting out the fine scratches and waves that sanding puts in. 😃👍

Nice job on the tinner's hammer...the beveled edges aren't necessarily a good thing for a tinner's hammer though..crisp edges are much more useful for Pittsburgh seams on duct work and such.
@ScoutCrafter5 ай бұрын
I think the reason they come from the factory beveled is because it’s a multi use hammer and while a 90 degree corner might help with soft sheet metal it’s a chipping hazard for anything else. I guess that’s why most Tinsmiths custom grind their tools for their particular use. 😃👍

Do you know if Malco makes their own hammers or are they made by someone like Estwing? Some Malco tools are really premium, and some is disappointing. I think of them as a standard HVAC, tinner and siding tool brand. I was introduced to the brand when I entered the HVAC industry around 1977. I have a Malco diagonal pliers and a Malco linesman pliers that are very disappointing. Good maintenance tips to try on the stacked leather handle. The leather is always a nice touch. My favorite list tool story is being disgusted with my little boys for losing tools that I purchased for them and to increase our at home tool inventory. I was at work a couple of years later and responded to a transformer fire that was mounted on a building column 15' or so from the floor. As I swung the man lift basket to the offending transformer I was delighted to find a small handful of premium brand tools laying on top of the transformer... Finder keeper! I retrieved the tools and found my young son's name engraved on each tool. I obviously had pilfered his tools, taken them to work, and left them out of sight on top of the transformer. My actions warranted a sober apology to my son after work that day. I returned the tools to him. He has long ago forgiven me. He also treated me Saturday to a power pipe threading machine that fills in nicely with my Ridgid setup. I found the exact model machine on eBay this morning. Current eBay price was $1550 and the best price for the accompanying oiler was over $300. He is a handy son to have!
