Beautiful work. Yesterday evening my sweet neighbor lady gave me her father-in-law’s Garland No. 1 which spent most of its life in an Alabama cotton mill. Cotton mills were a dangerous place, a spark could easily cause a cotton dust explosion. The hammer is beyond well used and needs the rawhide and wood handle replaced. During my apprenticeship, one of the fellows I worked with calle it a "dead pin cotter fitting". I have never forgotten it Not seen it done for years. Wonderful design head much better that our old Thor soft face mallets. But, If a hammer is going to get ten or twelve years work, two and a half hours work to fit and fettle it are not wasted. The guy from Farmcraft, john, made an awesome handle for a ditch ax, but then he used it to make a casting made fromm thousands of cans he melted down. Once he went that extra miles I felt like a 2 year old....I haven't attempted to hang a handle sice 😢😂. That turned out awesome. Cheers

Way too hi-tech a hammer for me. I just have barely got an orange dead blow hammer BUT just got through watching a deal about the last day the Linotype ran in the city. Had one in our county seat I used to go watch as a kid. WILDLY interesting. God Bless YOu!

Nice work! I did a version of that hammer with rawhide inserts for a friend! The nut removal was the tricky part for me. Hammer handles are tough but so rewarding!

Well done on lining the holes up. At first glance I thought you would have put the head in a vice, ran a long rod through and clocked the vice up. But your way is simpler and quicker.

Can i suggest a topic for one of your videos? What different hammer faces are used for. Eg why use an aluminium face, why use a leather face, why use a rubber face, why use a copper face etc. That would be quite educationalal. Cheers, Ian.

Beautiful job hanging that hammer John, that's an interesting design, but with it's own challenges, I have a few of the Birmingham (UK) made "Thor" Hammers that are similar but they have a different locking design, also have some of the "Halder" brand German Hammers - they go up to 125mm diameter ! Great tip using the brass pin to allign the pin hole. I guess I've hung a couple of dozen hammers & axes now, and I suppose it gets a little easier with experience but just when you think you've got it sussed you get caught out again ! I have a nasty scar on my thumb where I was a bit enthusiastic persuading a sledge hammer onto a new hickory handle about 20 years ago and got pinched ! 😬🤢😭 Farriers tools are great quality, but have you seen the prices, their hammers & pincers are scary pricey !

Yes, most times turning off center is used for Tapers. Intermittent cuts are very tricky. 😃👍

Ya got me crafterman…I’m so so impressed with that hole line up trick I was thinking get a diameter on the head then measure the difference in degrees from it..set the drill press table to that degree…I’d still be fooling with it…did you figure it out or did you read it somewhere…?? anyway fantastic video…one thing why not a bell shape at the end of the handle…🖖

I’ve been restoring tools for about a year now, what primer should I be using? Currently I’m using rustoleum self etching primer and filler primer, both seem to work nice but I want my project to last. Someone told me I need to use the self etching primer, but most of my projects have already been at the wire wheel or sanded. Also, don’t you have to put a sealer over South etching primer. Basically what is the correct primer to use on old steel and iron tools? No rust so I don’t need rust converter primer. Thanks !

I don’t always use primer. Enamel paint is slow drying and very durable. I used to use shellac as my primer and it was fantastic! 😃👍
