re: lack of TP ... guy walks into a public bathroom with diarrhea - after doing his business he realizes there is no toilet paper, he bangs on the door and asks anyone who is in the bathroom if they have toilet paper, the other guy replies "no". Then he asks if there are any paper towels? Answer "no". Asks if there is any newspaper. Answer "no". Then he asks if the guy has 2 fives for a ten😂

Just stumbled over this clip. At work (UK) we used Mole Grips for years. I still have 2 pairs from the 1970s, one for the truck, one for the workshop. They are absolutely bomb-proof! IME much stonger and easier to use than the original vise-grip or the latest copies. Would never swap them!

Great episode - funny stuff! Either of those pliers are better than my old pair of No. 7 Vise Grips (Dated April 14, 1942) that have no release lever at all. It takes two hands to open them.

Like you, I bought my first Vise-Grips® around age 16 - and they served me very well for over 40 years. About 2 1/2 years ago, I cleaned those up and gave them to my son, and indulged in a full set of German made Gedore® clamping pliers which are based on the Mole design. They also have a rubber-like coating on the bottom half of the release lever. I love using them. They are much easier to adjust the clamping force, and I never pinch my hand using them - something that happened all the time with the others. So I’m a fan of the Mole design.

Hey Scoutcrafter, enjoyed the video as ever. My 2 cents re. the British Army survival knife which I own. It's a wrecking bar, pry bar, machete, spade and axe all rolled into 1 and if that's all you've got it does them all. Of course a specialised tool will likely be superior to a multi-purpose tool for a single specific task but if you have to grab 1 portable survival tool, this is a serious contender. It's heavy and unsharpened from the factory but if you need to smash through a partition wall, jemmy a door or dig a hole in the dirt, you don't want sharp. That said if needed you can give it a paper slicing edge in 2 mins. The sheath is poor, only meant for toolbox storage but easy to make a custom replacement. Sheffield steel, might just save your life!

Hi Scoutcrafter. Recently discovered your channel and love it. Living in Scotland I have both vice and mole grips and prefer the release on the mole grips. The survival knife should have a sharp square edge on the back of the blade for scraping (tinder etc) and for using a fire rod. It is common to bevel one side and leave one sharp or to leave the last inch or two next to the handle sharp/square. Keep up the great work.

The knife you showed is exactly what you want to have with you if your life depends upon it. Not exactly great, but very dependable. As for the wrench, have a few of each and prefer the mole wrench, for me it’s less likely to kick back on me. Just my opinion. I was an Eagle Scout then went into the military, so have been a bit of a preparedness kind of guy all my life. Has always served me well. Thank you for your videos!

I had one of those Craftsman grips. It was flimsy. The release is easier to use but if you clamp down on something with too much force - and then you try to use the release - it just bends. The vise grips are much much beefier and designed for real gripping. Just my opinion. I always think of British soldiers as being badass with a knife. That one you showed seems very appropriate. Please stay safe - everyone.

As a general rule, you will only find "Mole Grips", or an off brand variant such as the Craftsman's, in the UK. The vise grip opening style ones are something that is more popular in America. My guess is that people will prefer the ones that feel right in the hand, and that will usually be the ones they are used to.

I've never seen the mole wrench before. But literally EVERY time I've ever used vise grips, I've said to myself, "There's gotta be a better way to design the release on these things." I think this may just be it... As for the knife, (this is gonna sound a little stupid I know) I wouldn't BUY it, but I think if I had one, I'd really like it. Great video as always. Love this Brit special edition and you get used to a certain tool therefore in the UK we like the original Mole grip design (although the original Mole Grips are no longer made in Newport, South Wales). I buy them whenever I can at the car boot sales and expect to pay around £1 for one. The U.S. supplied many thousand Vice Grips to the UK during WW2 for use in the aircraft production and Mole amended the design. The MOD knife is only issued to special forces and aircrew and as an ordinary soldier never, ever saw one. I have been retired 8 years and you are so right, don't miss the work but miss the guys and good times we had plus the visit to the pub after work on a Friday night after finishing the week.

I've had my mod knife for close to 40 years and still as good as the day I got it, it was also known as the pig in the army. Out in the field it's what it is, a do all to what it was made for. The sheath I wrapped the clasp in paracord cobra knot this reduces the movement, not a belt carry if you want your pants to stay up but tucked away in your Bergen it's a must have that'll never let you down. Mine was in a toolbox on a land rover back in the 80s I didn't know many that actually had one on them during operations.

I prefer the Visegrip by far. We had one of the craftsman moles when I was a kid and it always would open up while using it. It would drive me nuts, I hated that thing. I thought it was because my dad was cheap and didn't want to buy the "real" ones made by Peterson and we had to settle for the cheap imitations. When I got married I did by myself a real "vise grip".

I have bent the release on a mole grip style tool before. Obviously a cheap pair. My constant on-belt companion of 20+ years, a Kershaw A100 multi-tool, has a mole type and I like it. As to the knife...I never used one like that. I used to go survival camping. My Kershaw was with me for small knife work. Anything bigger I used my Estwing hatchet - these and the clothes on my back were the only things I would take into the woods with me. Good memories and good times!

I bought a craftsman mole in the late 1960's. Always did the job, and I preferred the grip type release. It was easier to release fast, with one hand. The Vice Grip's require a good pinch to release when there are tight. Overall though, the Vice Grips have a much better feel in the hand than the Craftsman.

I have all of those knives you displayed and the ones in the clips you showed. I also have the MoD knife and I absolutely LOVE this knife. The people who knock this knife, just don't know how to use this knife and I doubt that they even know how to sharpen a knife. I put a very sharp edge on my MoD knife and I could even feather stick a match stick. It's simple, yet durable & elegant. I own A LOT of American made knives but I always go back to this knife and this knife isn't even expensive at all. I mean for the price of a Becker bk2, I could buy 2 or 3 of these here in Canada. I don't get why American made knives are more expensive than a knife made overseas in the UK. It should be the other way around but when it comes to this knife, I'm glad it's not. I wear this knife on my hip still and gotten used to it, it's a sure conversation starter amongst my friends and I laugh when the MoD outperforms some of their more expensive U.S.A made knives. I have seen a Tops Armageddon knife slightly bend off center and I have seen an Ontario RTAKII get a warp along the cutting edge but yet not even so much as a scratch on the coating on this knife. I don't care for these knife companies that boast in their "differential heat treat" or "cryo-quench" or whatever it is they do to their knives to sell it, it's all just marketing, nothing more. I would rather trust a knife made from a very long line of knife makers that date back generations upon generations, this is a knife that, unless you could break a damn bowling ball, you cannot break this beast of a knife, even the coating on it is very durable. I absolutely love it so much that I will be buying a custom made version from J. Adams LTD.

I have an original "Mole" (Reg Trade Mark) Selfgrip wrench made in Newport Monmouthshire, GB. I've had it since my apprentice days. It has a squeeze to release leaver. But best of all I have, from the same maker, a sort of "C" clamp into which the thick handle fits which lets me affix it to a bench or tabletop giving me a small sort of vice, freeing both hands to work on whatever is being held.
@michaelkowalski11304 жыл бұрын
I kind of remember using some sort of "mole grip" plier, I didn't like them because like others have said I tended to grip them and open them by accident. I also remember US General, in the 70's I used to get their catalog and was entertained by their woodworking tools. I've heard rumblings that someone is going to manufacture some type of Locking Pliers again in DeWitt Nebraska.

I have one of those mole type visegrip pliers. I'll have to check and see if I can find writing on it. It is an old pair that I have had in service for as long as I can remember alongside several pair of regular visegrip pliers. One thing I noticed is on your craftsman version it has a straight jaw just like the pair I have. All the visegrip pliers I have, have a curved jaw. I wonder if the shape of the jaw was in one or the others' patent? For the record, if I have a visegrip really tight, I don't release it with my hand. I have been stung by them enough to know better. The mole style can be safely released even when it's really tight, so I agree it is a better release method.

Hey John, the original mole grips were excellent tools, they’re still floating around here if you look for them in second hand shops and at boot sales, I think I have some somewhere, the release mechanism is easier than the vise grip and less likely to smack your knuckles when you release them when you have them clamped up tight on a workpiece. The MOD survival knife is a tough old tool even though the sheath is a nasty thing. The steel made in Sheffield was second to none at one time, they don’t make as much of it there anymore but I’d bet it’s still good stuff. Also remember when these things were being given out in their thousands to servicemen who don’t care much about them, an expensive custom sheath was a bit extravagant. I suspect that a decent sheath is available somewhere and that would make the knife far more appealing. That thick blade and tough handle scales will no doubt stand up to one of UNCLE SAMS MISGUIDED CHILDREN bashing the hell out of it and if the fit hits the shan and it’s what you have, then you’ll be at least able to perform your basic, life preserving tasks. I suspect it would be a resilient means to cut, bash or stab anything you might encounter if you bailed out of a boat or aircraft somewhere inhospitable. Maybe a portion of the spine could be left sharp to facilitate the use of a ferro rod. Making a nice sheath with a ferro rod holder and a usable sharpening stone pocket would make a couple of good uploads, if you feel the need eh?😉😉

John, I couldn’t agree more, sometimes a scalpel is the tool for the job, but they don’t call hammers “ Universal Spanners” for nothing. Sometimes a little “Brute force and ignorance” is the intelligent solution. That knife epitomises this ethos. I might buy one and have my brother, who is a talented harness maker and leather worker, make a good, tough sheath with the right attachment points and accessories.

The Craftsman style release is easier to operate - however it can be accidentally be released when you don't want it to. I own about a dozen Original versions of the VG's and I have never given it much thought as they all work well. Milwaukee now makes a version with a loop on th escrew to allow you to ise a screwdriver to tighten it an extra pinch. Look into their version. Looks like what they call a camp knife now, I carry in my pocket a old little fixed blade edge mark explorer made in japan and sometimes ill carry my benchmade bushcrafter EOD or a TOPS bootlegger... The benchmade is scary sharp so i rarely take it out of the sheath.

I've got a pair of mole grips. Pretty old ones , called Mole but appear to be made by Elmo. Both words stamped into the jaw.

Good afternoon I prefer the vise grip design I had two of the mole grip design and when moving a small fabed up work piece you have to be careful not to bump them on your welding table they tend to pop open

Work camaraderie is the best medicine. I really like that Air Force survival knife. The British knife is a brute. It's a thick one good for say splitting wood or..... being a survival knife eh? Great Wednesday video.

Funny I was on my way to the grocery store today *(Bread Aisle Wiped Out Today)* and I was just thinking about my old work mate, wishing he was still alive and we could build one last building together or something.......It would be great to Fire up the Torches & Welders again and go like crazy for a month or so.......Those days are gone though. The thing that always makes me laugh is we built a stirring system for a huge oil tank at a tank farm and their maintenance man was assisting us during the installation. Big Guy, maybe 6'4" 300+ pounds wearing one of those Tyvek suits and he was squeezing thru the manhole on the side coming into the tank, Bob looks at that Big Boy coming thru the hole and says "Looks Like A Whale Giving Birth".....Not sure why but that makes me laugh every time. Years ago I had one pair of the Mole Grip style but never really cared for them, not sure what happened to them, haven't seem em in years. That Knife looks like a bit of a Brick but probably good for chopping and such.
@ScoutCrafter4 жыл бұрын
That is funny- Those Tyvek suits are certainly not flattering! =D We were issued safety vests after an incident so everyone was wearing these ill-fitting vests but one guy got a vest that was 3 sizes too big! It hung down almost to his knees... What a laugh every time we saw him...

Love that knife!! When I was stationed at Ft Richardson, Ak in 1987 they sold this Brit knives in the clothing sales shop. I hemmed and hawed about buying one and when I finally went to buy one... gone! One time deal as I asked if I could order one. So, just for the record I ordered it now! With wood scales like back in the day. Always preferred VG.. the original not these soft steel things they make now. I have another type of these I’ll shoot ya a pic of that are similar. Stay safe my friend. Semper Fi.

Mike! I wanted this knife for years but the reviews kept me from ordering one... After wanting for so long I just gave in and bought it and I must say I do love that clunky beast!!!! I think you will too because as Marines we like things stronger than us! LOL Semper Fi!!!!!

It came in yesterday!! Built like a tank. A 1993 with mod arrow stamp. No edge worth speaking of but I have a diamond stone that will fix that. Stay safe my friend.

The British knife is cool, has it's uses I am sure. I like the original US made Vice-Grips best. I found a 6" needle nose pair lying on the road the other day (I recognized the sound as I drove over it!).

You would love the stuff we do to each other in the Fire House!!!! Last week I soaked the new guys sweat shirt in water... I folded it perfect.... and then put it in the freezer overnight .... There is no limit.... I will definitely miss that when I retire....

LOL!!!! That is funny! You know construction workers have the best gags, ever see the one where they ask the new guy how many times he can press bag of cement? (Then they slit the bottom of the bag while he's pressing it) Too funny!

you also see a lot of mole grips in belgium, I like the vice grips better tough. I have a tendency to pinsh my handpalm with the mole grips once the rivets get looser. but my mole grips are all unknown brands maybe that is an issue to look at also.

Ive got alot of knives too brother scout Have you seen the 125th anniversy moraknive its the traditional wood handle & leather sheath puukko its one of my favorite knives from what ive found out about the MOD knife is its made that way because its actaully a not issue to the troops its a special deployment tool used by the special forces and they mod them to the way they like also its carried in a vehicle like mounted inside

Hey there I just wanted to tell you not to use too many of those paper towels up cleaning that knife lol! But it is cool I like it you could mimic that scene in the movie crocodile Dundee with it “that’s not a knife now this is a knife” haha! Cheers Ken

I prefer the Vise-Grip over the Mole grip type. The Mole seems not to hold as well and is harder to release. Now on the hoarding TP issue....I just worry that there will be some other crisis. Going to have a diarrhea virus and we are going to have a run on nasal spray. :)

I never use the back of the knife for fire steels and the black coating on these knives won't spark well... Better off using the blade!

I have my father's Craftsman "mole grip" pliers. I never liked them as much as the vise grip design. I find that it is too easy to release the lock by accident when using the "mole grip" pliers.
