Scout! so prolly 20 years ago I had a beef cow that loved me (shutup you pervs :)) whenever she saw me she'd rush the fence and start mooing. One day I was using an 18 inch adjustable to tighten a bolt on my tractor when she started her commotion. The wrench slipped and bashed my knuckles. I turned around and yelled "Will you shut the @#$# UP!" and threw the wrench (yes I was bad). It missed the cow. The wrench however went "Sploop" and disappeared under the muck in the paddock. It reappeared 3 years later seized tight as a tick!. I kept it as it belonged to my grandfather, but never really took the time to figure its issues.. I mean it was a stained rusty lump.. That tool is now cleaned up and polished and ready for the next infatuated bovine! Thank you for fixing an heirloom!

In the machine shop a machinist usually has 3 wrenches in the tool box.. a 6,10, &12 Crescent wrench. In a manual shop setting, the machinist is tightening and loosening metric, inch, hex, & square headed fasteners all day long and there's no room in a machinist's tool box for two sets of combination wrenches. Usually you aren't torqueing stuff up to within an inch of it's life so a Crescent adjustable wrench works just fine. I agree with you and others here that a good adjustable wrench, when used normally, is in no danger of it being broken by flipping it the 'wrong' way. My go-to wrench on the lathe and mill is a 1936 12" Crescent wrench. I purchased it from the original purchaser when he retired in 1976. It has the old style thick head and body your wrench has and with 82 years of continueous use shows no noticeable signs of wear. Cheers from NC/USA

Hello Ace! Wow! What a great story!!!!! The older "thick" Crescents were just so beefy! Totally over-built! Now computer designing and over engineering has led to much thinner wrenches that are fine but lose the WOW factor when using... A lot of tool snobs ridicule using a crescent wrench saying use a real wrench. I tell you back in the day when I was poor and could not afford tools, this wrench helped me keep my old jalopies going so I could get to work. Mine was a montgomery wards version

I even used to adjust the timing when I moved into the Rocky Mountains, using my ear instead of a timing gun because I just didn't have the money for one. But I was never ashamed, and to the contrary - the story makes me proud of my father, myself, and my sons. Like you, I have a whole box of nice Craftsman USA top quality open-ended wrenches as well as sockets. Most of the time I grab one of my three Crescent wrenches!

Great video, so much truth. I’m guilty of wrench abuse after working in a Hydraulic shop where production was mandatory with little concern was given for tools by the company (they supplied cheap tools and minimum variety), you had to get the job done. Sometimes a forklift was the proper cheater bar to break loose large bolts or nuts. “Any port in a storm” as they say. That would never happen with any of my personal tools now!

The biggest source of damage that I got wrenches turned in for replacement from was not marks on the handles, bent handles, or sprung jaws. It was having the jaws not close because the heavy head made it a easy substitute for a 3 lb hammer. I was at Tractor Supply the other day and they were selling a new adjustable wrench with a hammer head on the back side. Ruined it for any work in a tight area. The second biggest you solved with the Locktite. All that hammering loosened the screw pin. The pin, jaw, and wheel would fall out of the wrench.

Hi Dave! I find that many times the pins do back out over time! Every time I restore a wrench I always put a drop of medium locktite on the pin when reinstalling it. Tractor supply I think has their own suppliers overseas! They always have unusual stuff I only see there! Thanks!!!! 😃👍

Oh yeah, now that's a wrench 😎 it turned out great. I was fortunate enough to be at Lowe's when they reduced a U.S. made 24" Crescent brand adjustable wrench to half price. It was the last one and I couldn't grab it fast enough. This was a couple years ago and if memory serves, it was originally $99. 😁 Enjoyed it, my friend.

4 minutes in; when you need extra force on a wrench, that's what a cheater pipe is for. If you simply MUST strike the wrench, then wrap a rag around it, at a minimum. You can also stack and hold s block if wood on it, and just wale away.

Picked one of those up at a yard sale. It has yellow paint in the recessed part of the handle. I don't want to strip the original paint off, even if it is heavily worn. Either that, or I'm lazy as the dog the quick brown fox jumped over.

Love your videos, Scoutcrafter. You've inspired me to begin to restore hand tools. Lots of fun! You lost me a bit with the cheater bar comment though. My dad had me working on cars since I was old enough to fetch him the tools. I have use cheater bars for a long time and have only very rarely broken a tool. I have a fine collection of pipes right now to slip over the handles of wrenches. I am also not above using a hammer tap to move things along. I realize one must use restraint and wisdom in the use of these techniques but it saves me having to buy a four-foot Crescent wrench! Thanks again for the videos!

Hello Tom! Cheater bars are a must have for any type of heavy work! I have them and use them! The point I was trying to make is that you won't break an adjustable wrench using it correctly... This 18" Crescent can handle a cheater bar because of how heavy duty it is! I always preferred a cheater bar to hammering on the wrench. They make special wrenches that are made for hammering on!!!! Tools are meant to get the job done, we try to treat them well but when a nut is stuck and you need it off we do what we have to!!!!! Thanks very much Tom!!!!!!

On a separate note... As a plumber you would think I use adjustable wrenches and open end wrenches a lot. I almost never use open end wrenches and only seldom use an adjustable wrench. My go to wrench is your typical slip joint plyers. (Channellocks) I keep a 5" pair in my back pocket and a 14" pair in my tool bucket and they 95% of everything I need to do. The big plyers even replace a pipe wrench for me because I know how to use them properly and have a strong grip (at least while I'm still young anyway) I only grab a pipe wrench when it's seriously tight. It's true that there's a right and wrong tool for every job but you're absolutely right, don't get bent out of shape when somebody uses a tool in a way it wasn't meant to be used if they aren't hurting themselves, the tool, the work piece, or anyone else and they are getting quality work done efficiently. Believe me, as a tradesmen that does every sort of home repair if it's invaluable to be able to make a tool do 50 different tasks well for you because it frees up space in the truck for more tools and you end up carrying less tools into the house with you.

That thing is a hoss! In trade schools and autoshop classes it is taught to apply torque gripping the solid end to keep from rounding off fasteners. Fact is that tool is just the wrong tool if you have the right size wrench! Yes, I have some and do occasionally use them.

Who says size doesn't matter ;-). I thought my 12inch Bahco was hefty but the 18inch Crescent knocks it into a cocked hat. Love the sheer weight and heaviness of the wrench and when any nut sees it they know you mean business!. Great video as always and kindest regards from across the pond. I was told to use it the proper way too. The reason is that you can bent the mechanical part minimal, causing a play in the adjustment mechanism if you use too much force. So not breaking it, but damaging it. If you just simply loosen or tighten a bolt that would be not a problem. I suppose this can become a problem if you try to break a screw which is really tight.

I have three such wrenches: 10" Ridgid (USA) 8" Channellock (Spain) 12" Gedore insulated up to 1000V (Germany) The Gedore thumb wheel is backwards. That's the same as it is with the brits I suppose. They install the steering wheel on the glove box, so they can drive better on the wrong side of the street.

Nice clean up. Noticed on the disassembly and reassembly you were missing one part on the adjusting screw. Some time before you aquired that wrench someone had lost the spring that holds tension on the adjusting screw so it doesn't slide from one end to the other changing the opening you set by the amount of play in the screw opening in the head of the wrench. Next time you have it apart you might want to get that piece to put it back in original factory condition. I have that wrench myself plus the 12 inch and 24 inch. They are hard to beat when you need the extra beef 😉

Hi Scout I have an adjustable wrench, or spanner as we call them here in the UK, that has a clamp attachment same as mole grips so once you have tightened the jaws to the nut size you can then clamp it tight onto it. I’ve found it really handy as it prevents any chance of the jaws spreading and rounding off the nut. Great channel and always look forward to your new videos.

Don't sweat the small stuff is so appropriate when you get older. My first tool renovation was a right mess I commented on it here and you said don't worry it will come with practice. You were so right, I revisited the hammer I screwed up and made it so much better. Today I had a go at a screwdriver from the 1960s it was full of paint, the end was angled I gave it a good going over and revealed the logo made in England by Footprint? it has turned out greatly polished up and the handle revarnished pleased with the result. Regarding (made in) despite all my Radio Controlled alarm clocks my go to clock for train journies or when going to the airport is a Westclock mechanical alarm clock from the 1950s it has been dropped, stood on , and abused but still keeps perfect time and works every time. It has the logo made in Scotland. I also have a fully working Black and Decker one speed electric drill from 1955 it is all metal and still in use. They made things to last don you agree?

I have heard that myth about breaking a adjustable wrench since I was a kid and have always thought the same thing as you. I mean the wrench has an offset for a reason so you can swap it either direction, I don't know who started this myth and I am just as curious as to why when you buy one new why there isn't directions explaining the proper use on the little cardboard peghook hanger thing. I personally have broke a "crescent" wrench twice only by putting a pipe on the handle and even then it wasn't a quality wrench but a Chinese one. Now I am older and andd I have replaced all of the junk stuff with a couple of Williams brand ones and a really high quality made in Spain one (that I can't remember the brand name of off the top of my head). The saying is with age comes wisdom now I try to use the proper tool for the job and not use a cheater bar. Anyways another great inspirational video and I hope you have a great weekend my friend.

I remember many years ago seeing one of those things about turning it the one way was because it loosened up less during use. I've found that to be the case, but that could be all in my head. That being said as long as it gets the job done without damaging the piece, it's the right way. At least in my shop it is.

Only caveat I would say; I have an older made in USA black oxide 4” crescent wrench and they put a directional arrow on the handle showing to only use it one direction because the 4” will break on you if you muscle it. But they didn’t put the arrow on the 6,8,12” models.

I always enjoy these videos! In fact, I look forward to them!! I think the biggest wrenches I've seen were used on steam locomotives! I can't tell you the biggest sizes of the jaws but open end wrenches and crescent type wrenches that were three feet long were used! You need one of those! LILCO used to have some big ones too, they used them on the bolts that held the metal poles to the bases.

Hi Bill! Last month at the Pa. Steam show there was this lady selling glassware... Next to her booth she had a milk crate full of RUSTY tools and a sign .50 each... I found an Auto wrench and bought it... then I saw she had a huge (2-7/16") Williams Open End Wrench... Rusty too but not bad... I pointed to it and asked how much.. She said "Ten dollars"... I asked "Would you take Eight?" She said "Sure" So i gave her the $8 and walked away with this huge heavy wrench... I will never use it but it is so cool! Big tools are amazing and like you said the RR wrenches are BIG, so are ship wrenches! BIG! Nice! LOL Thanks!!!!!!!!!

Hi Scout Crafter this reminds me of this beautiful 6 inch Snap On adjustable wrench I used to have I paid $35 from a Snap On truck for it this wrench was so beautiful and shiny you could wear it as jewelry. I made the mistake of lending it to a customer who told me he had put it beside my toolbox when he was finished with it. I went looking for it and the guy was gone and so was the wrench never saw either again.

My daily looks like your 'before' but it gets oiled regularly so it doesn't get any worse. With all the humidity here it'd get that way inside or outside. On the job the truck driver needed to change a trailer hitch ball. He had a 10-inch adjustable and couldn't move it. He;s a muscled up guy but it was too tight for him. I was on the hoe and hollered for him to wait a second. I walked the hoe over and as he held it I got the wrench in a depression between the tooth and shank and held it till he got out of the way. Then slowly put the pressure to it and eased the wrench around so he could finish the job. It was opened ALL the way because the nut was BIG. Just goes to show that they make good stuff! Thanks Scout and I have a 6-inch that does need the wheel! It was in the pump house but not now.

Can someone out there tell me which sizes of Jamestown Crescent Adjustable Wrenches actually used SPRINGS with the knurl wheels. I noticed this larger wrench didn't have a spring or the indentation slot for a spring on the knurl wheel. For instance, I took apart a 12" and it also appears to not use a spring.

Hello wladimir! Yes!! Bahco are fantastic wrenches!! They used to be made in Sweden but now I think are made by IREGA in Spain. Still good! The one thing with Bahco wrenches some of them are reverse feed, meaning that the thumbscrew is opposite of most... When you push your thumb up it will open instead of close! I have one of those wrenches and it always screws me up!! Lol. Thanks so much!!!!

Hello scoutcradter. I am in the middle of restoring my father’s old Utica Adjustable wrench and while taking it apart, I stripped the screw head that hold the knurled barrel for adjusting the wrench. Not sure how to get it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I highly suggest you pick up a set of knipex plier wrenches 86 03 125 is the pair I have which is the 5inch size, The 7 inch size pn 86 03 180 (notice a trend?), 180 = 180millimeters 86 03 250 = the 10 inch model. The best place to get them is either ebay or amazon or the german amazon.de which is what I use to order my german and european tools @ almost 50% of the US cost even including shipping. Its fun to look up tools and bring up google translate and a calculator.. Another thing is when you use Usa currency the price actually drops and instead of the euro being worth more its almost equal or the dollar is stronger!. Take care!

Thanks for those wise words at the end!! I knew about the offset on fixed open enders and of course on adjustables. Never corollated the two! Otherwise I could have shot my mate , Colin, down in flames when he said " you're using that the wrong way" This was a 6" adjustable tightening a ten mill bolt! As if!

Hey I love your videos! I have question. So I attempted to restore my grandfather’s Craftsman brand adjustable wrench. It was all rusted in bad shape so I tried a vinegar soak but the whole thing turned black and left behind nasty gunk. Also it looks like the shinny/silver coating is flaking off. I’m thinking it’s maybe isn’t steal and had a veneer of some sort. Have you ran across any thing like this? Thanks!

Yes! Many times older wrenches were coated with a zinc finish or some the of chromium.... Just wire brush that junk off and bring out all of the pits and then buff it out to a really nice luster! You are 1/2 way there! =) Thanks!
