I've been holding my emotions in for 48 years.I could not even begin to believe that after being World Champions in 75 that the staff would give us a show like this.I marched it and it was embarrassing.Ok we went through a gruesome camp to change it all and again took 2nd place.Two years out of three.I won't even mention the debacle of 74.

Bare your soul, my friend. There are not many left who can tell that story. Just for history, I'd like to hear what you have to say with an "inside baseball" version of events and how you personally and the entire corps changed to come out just short of winning it all that year.

I find it hard to believe that there isn't a single copy of that show on video tape. I marched in that show, it was what it was; we changed shows and still came in second. Never done before or since.

Greatest comeback in DCI history.

1976 Thousand Oaks CA Show - After hearing only recordings of them and watching the '75 DCI finals on PBS I finally got to see them live. I was impressed. Loved Mahogany!

Knew about this show version but had never heard it. It sounds like they couldn't execute it. MacArthur Park arrangement also sounds different. Thanks for posting.

Nice find! I Wasn't aware that the Scouts ever played "Shaft". These old tapes are interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Wonder if this show could have worked better on the G bugles from the 80s & 90s ... I feel part of the issue is the horns used (which I am pretty sure are valve-rotor bugles) ... I played a valve-rotor horn while 1982 Archer-Epler Musketeers acquired more two-valve horns and I just wasn't very happy with it ... bet that the arrangers would have gotten "froggier" with good all-valved horns ...

They were definitely piston/rotor G bugles as DCI didn’t start to phase in 2 valved instrument’s until the next year, Sopranos in 1977, Mellophones in 1978, Baritones in 1979 and Contras in 1980. DCA went all in allowing them all in 1978. Ray Baumghardt was a masterful arranger. I am unsure about his opinion on 2 valved or fully chromatic instruments.

It's 2024. I thought I had seen all the drum corps videos because that's most of what I watch but after being on YT for 9 years this appeared in my feed. I had never heard this show before and of course I know the story. After hearing it for the first time just now I can see why it failed. The arrangements and tune choices are mediocre at best. I can hear a huge difference in the enthusiasm the Scouts played with in the updated show which finished with a well deserved 2nd place. Repeated show or not, the feat of replacing an entire show in the second half of the season will NEVER be done again.

I liked uhm, the tenor section playing while marching off the field, just kidding. MacArthur Park has always depressed me, I looked it up, now I know why, it's the story behind the song, check it out: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacArthur_Park_(song)

this is the first time I heard this opener Shaft from Madsion. The Bridgman played a different version of Shaft in the early 80's which was on point. Something was missing from this version. But they played it well. That was a hell of a feat to revamp the entire show and pull off 2nd place.......wow.

well honestly it was their entire show from the year before so it wouldn't have been that hard.

This is the first time I have heard Madison's first show version from 1976. It definitely lacked the "in your face" attack and swagger Madison had in the 70's. I like their revamped show much better. DCI 1976 was Madison's "balls out" performance. Who knows what would have happened if Madison came all the way back to win in Philly?
@jdavis575 жыл бұрын
Not sure if that would have happened. BD was pretty much unstoppable for most of the year.

Never heard this before. Certainly not a huge hit with the fans. It probably would have been amazing by the end of the year.

Nah. The show was a dud. Scouts brass was smart enough to realize this early enough to scrap it and revamp the 75 show in time for a strong 2nd place finish.
