That is exactly the case. The original author posted about it on another creators video (NightMind) and said as much. The breakdown the monster had was from the other kid dying of old age.

My theory is that the other Child was a Type Green. He probaly just got really unlucky and his friend transformed him into the Tunnel monster.

His friend was most likely a reality bender who never realized or forgot he had those powers. That's why the Tunnel Monster was so upset when he died. He lost his only hope of being turned back. Now he plays the game alone.
