Congratulations on the boat. Very impressive. What is more impressive is the fact that you built it with your foot/ankle in a medical boot.

Awesome build Brother..!. My Brother Mike built one in his basement, and couldn't get it out..!. Roflmao.. it was just a few inches too long and wouldn't clear the steps.!. He got so mad, that he went out and got a chainsaw and cut it into pieces..!. Roflmao.

The first boat I built was an 8ft flat bottomed punt made with plywood. It moved damn quick with a 5hp motor and got me out fishing. There's no fancy engineering needed for a small utility boat...good work...ENJOY!

Hi. We're from Big Plywood.... and we're not happy! People forget how a flat bottom can get up on a plane and hug the corners when turning. Take the inlaws for spin and let them sit in the bow when you run into a chop. Good job.

The fellow at Tips From A Shipwright builds wooden boats without glassing over the hull. You just have to account for swelling when you build it. His video series on the work skiff is really good.

Very cool project and Video when I was a kid my parents had a Uncle that owned and operated a very successful Trucking Business that used to have a lot of Shipping crates and Pallets left over so many of mt family members could go there and get lots of free 2X4s which they all did for so many home improvement projects some of my Cousins got very creative with all that lumber one of which built Faux Beams he put in his high ceiling Living room I always thought those were cool because they torch burnt them and stained them a dark color to simulate more of a Walnut look than Pine 2X4s ! That cousin and his wife were always very creative and Artistic on everything they did together ironically as luck would have it i myself became a Professional Woodworker in my Adult life to provide a honest living for myself and my family I always thought it would be a cool idea to show or teach how many neat and Beautiful items could be built out of traditional Framing Woods Obviously milling and re-saving them to new dimensions because Exotics and Hardwoods can be so expensive of course i was always a fan of Norm Abrams The New Yankee Workshop and my wife used to ask me to build this or that for or home. But would freak out on the overall cost of the items and supplies it needed ! She really wasn’t that awake of all the costs of the tools i needed to do those projects i used to laugh because on those shows they were sponsored by the big tool companies and had one of everything where i was a guy building Furniture with a Circular saw and a Router on the weekends in my Basement with the kids running around

Good build reason I'm here got a boat build on the brain. I'm sick of high price aluminum boats. I wanting 18 ft skiff with deep sides. For river fishing big yachts and barges create such a big wake they freak me out. I own couple aluminum boats thier just not a good choice. If your on the water alot a recreational John just don't hold up. And the cost is just ridiculous. Wood just has so many stye options. And if you can build a wood boat you don't have to seek out a repair shop for a fix or repair. And I think it's so cool to fish out of a wood boat. Especially if you built it. I think wood out class's anything on the water. The colors on this boat just stands out pirate ship skull and crossbones on the bow would be cool. Appreciate the video well worth the watch.

Man that boat is sweet ! I have been boating myself for over 30 years have owned personally 17 or 18 boats mostly power but a few sail and one antique wooden Chris Craft Cabin Cruiser that i restored Ive also have thousands of hours. Operating from the Chesapeake Bay and up a down the Intra coastal Waterway and through out the Florida Keys and the Carribean the fact that you built that boat all out o reclaimed lumber was cool and amazing. As well as getting it to look correct and have good lines in the water i applaud you and Would think if you could come up with a set of plans anf a lumber package list for all new would be a big hit. Your skiff would be a great dinghy for live aboards that. Often need to dinghy. To shore to restock supplies and provisions plus it would be a relatively easy and inexpensive boat to repair anywhere if needed a major plus for live aboards who usually are on budget restraints for varirety of reasons

@scottdowney43182 жыл бұрын
Epoxy and glass fabric. Thing is rot will eventually claim that kind of unprotected wood, especially if stored outside in the weather. I have a production built Eggharbor 37 built in 1970, and I get to fix all the OEM mistakes they made which hastened its decline. One I am dealing with right now are the plain IRON spikes driven into the white oak floor (joists) to pin them to the white oak keel. Bad practice as the oak around the iron turns to mud if it gets wet due to a chemical reaction with oak. Doing that also cuts the floor strength in half running a 1/2 inch metal pin spike down the board center on edge. It is honestly a dumb thing to do, but saves them effort during construction. I have had 3 bad spike wood reactions, had to replace one floor, but the 2 others I can strengthen with long pieces of oak glued and screwed into the top sides on each floor.

Flat bottom skiffs are imo best hull design because it is the most versatile, it can float on couple inch of river water and land on shallow ocean beaches and also take rough coast waters if you build high sides and bow. It can be moved around with normal utility trailer. It is a natural planer hull, takes off with small engine power. V-hull is total opposite of these but it is only better on waves which doesnt really matter on a small boat because big waves will disturb all small boating anyway. I would go flat skiff any day, it is also decent to row and paddle. Im curious. How did you planked hull stay in shape after 2 years? What would you change? Did the planks crack? Hows the paint job?

@MichaelHeibel5 жыл бұрын
Merci. It's curved up about 9cm. The next one will be more like 16cm.
@Makermook5 жыл бұрын
Nice job. I'd ask the haters how many boats they've built, but I doubt they'd answer truthfully. Nail holes...what did you fill them with? I use epoxy thickened with wheat flour. And did you caulk/bed the joints? Now that it's done and in the water, what would you do differently?
@MichaelHeibel5 жыл бұрын
I filled the holes with gflex or six-ten. I bedded the joints and frames with several marine caulk brands (maybe some roofing tar) and I tried some cotton also. I couldn't stop when I ran out of something so I just grabbed whatever was available. If I did it again I wouldn't use reclaimed wood and I would take my time and build it in a garage. I might even want to use plywood and get it done even faster and not worry about the boat staying swelled up to stay watertight. Also, my second one will be longer, wider, and with a v-bottom. The haters make me laugh.
@Makermook5 жыл бұрын
Lou Sauzedde would be proud of his influence :)
@KoonceTodd5 жыл бұрын
I might recommend a couple things if you do it again. I would add some amount of V to the hull at the bow in addition to the bottom to for handling and wave entry, and it isn't too hard to do a layer of fiberglass and resin over your wood to aid in sealing and structural integrity. There are lots of videos on here of doing just that.
@MichaelHeibel5 жыл бұрын
@@KoonceTodd My second boat will definitely be a V-hull. If you look closely when we flip the boat over it's really flat, and that's because I did a layer of fiberglass on the bottom- I usually don't talk about that because a lot of people have strong opinions about not fiberglassing a planked hull.
@littleshepherdfarm21285 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelHeibel Well, the good news is that you can sell it and use the money you make to buy the wood you need to build your next boat...or at least some of it. Hope you do cuz I can;;t wait to see what you build next. Very cool. I just bought my first 12 foot row boat for $230 and a trailer to haul it for $250. Been reworking them both. Cool project..

@dpenman334 жыл бұрын
Very cool. I'm curious how you joined the planks to make up the full length of the hull? Are they joined together (scarfed?) prior to springing them to the boat, or do you simply fasten each piece of timber individually, making sure they meet on a frame?
@MichaelHeibel4 жыл бұрын
I did both, but I'd scarf all in the future because a butt joint will show through the paint job.
@justdoingitjim70955 жыл бұрын
Good work on your first boat. On your next one try putting some rocker in it and flare the sides some. It gives the boat more character (looks) and flare helps keep the water out. Check out my build and you'll see what I mean.
