I never saw him comment on blade angle or the use of the bowing screw .I actually never turn a hook on my veritas scraping plane .Just sharpen to 45 degrees.

what are the advantages of using this scraping plane compared to a traditional plane. it seems like they achieve the same objective

Scraping planes are usually VERY wide ,and MUCH wider than smoothing planes . Also the shavings from a scraper can be made thinner than a smoother.

The real benefit is that they are indifferent to grain direction, they never cause tearout
