In this video I will be running you through how to setup, sharpen and use a Stanley 12 1/2 scraper plane. This includes 2 different ways to sharpen a scraper plane, how to adjust the scraper head to get a perfect surface and to top it off i show you the scraper in action on a few sample pieces.
Have a new scraper plane from, Lie Nielsen, Lee Valley (Veritas) or Luban? Well you've come to the right place! The setup is identical although they look very different!
Hope you enjoy!!

Very nice to see you feeling your way along with these old tools, Luke. Nothing over- refined about these videos and that's the beauty of them.

@@SimonHoning your best bet is Timbecon, they sell the Luban scraper plane which has a 1.6mm thick scraper and appears to be almost identical to the blade in my 12 1/2 except they only have a bevel on one end, I've included the link for you here: www.timbecon.com.au/scraping-plane-73 If you cant find the replacement scraper click on the drop box under the heading and you will find replacement blade listed there. I also found this one also found here www.woodworksupplies.com.au/p/9574785/12112-scraper-plane-blade-o1-high-carbon-steel.html to give you other options. Lie-Nielson Australia also has one too but that is 3.55mm thick hope this helps

Well. I've only ever had a #80 and so this has never been part of my artillery. I like the adjustable angle and interchangeable blades. Versatile springs to mind - I like versatile. I work mostly in Pine so it would be great to have (certainly better than a #80 or card scrapers). Will I rush out to buy a new one? No. Would I buy a good used one if it was reasonably priced? I'd be there like a V8...!

It's certainly not 100% necessary for pine as a well setup hand plane can usually get the job done most of the time. Having said that i do use it occasionally when the hand plane causes the pine to tear out (usually notty construction pine).

I've never had a problem using a scraper on pine, gives great results most of the time it's really not difficult. But it would be difficult to use a scraper wearing a straight jacket.
