Floating objects in challenge mode is easier than you think. 1. Put item on lift 2. Put in position you want 3. Leave item on lift 4. Exit and save challenge mode. Once you reload the item will be floating. However that only works for static objects, no idea how they got moving items to float.

I figured it out, float a block or object and you can now attach a bearing or piston after it’s stuck in space. This wouldn’t work last time I tried, maybe something with the last update allowed this now.

Of course this is from the viewpoint of a novice so I don't really know much.
