Welcome to another episode of Scrap Mechanic! Today I am recreating another weird mechanism that causes a table to move side to side in a straight and flat motion. Will it work as well in Scrap Mechanic?

Fun fact: This mechanism is actually just the plantigrade linkage ScrapMan already built, just flipped upside down and with extra bits for support. In fact, this is the *original* implementation of the plantigrade linkage that the inventor came up with. The idea was to use this in steam engines to support the horizontal movement of the piston without linear bearings.

I don’t know if any of you guys have noticed but ScrapMan has actually shortened his intro down to just the gear opening and not the music intro. The last instance of him using the S and M colliding was April 20th 2022 in his Abriss video. His Wedge Fighter Plane uploaded on the 21st is the start of him not using the music intro. Thought I’d point it out because I went back to watch an older video and noticed that.

there are a few things that I would like to point out, first of which being parallel lines. if you'll notice, the yellow line and red (orange?) line stay parallel through the whole motion. another thing is midpoints. the red line was built off of the midpoint of the green line. one thing I might've recomended for this particular build would be starting with the diagonals, specifically green. since we know that the length of green and the length of yellow are the same, with the length of red being half that, and also knowing that green needs a reliable midpoint for red to attach to, as well as the parallel relation between yellow and red, I figure it would be logical to start with green, consdering how many relations it has. of course there is also the mathematical way of doing it, figuring out lengths/ratios with the Pythagorean theorem, but as far as trial and error goes, you want to pay attention to as many minute details as possible. tldr: when recreating mechanisms, it may be beneficial to not only look at positioning of joints and how it generally moves, but also how it moves relative to itself, considering which things will stay parallel or perpendicular and other things of the sort.

I think that bearings are way cheaper to build in survival mode than pistons. So if you like a platform that can quickly extend and retract while bot raids are going on, I think it's a cheaper solution than medieval-styled castle gates. I think those doorways have to be big enough in order to protect the base form afar. This contraption can be put under water with the platform getting you out of reach. and it seems that it would be easier to protect with sturdy materials against Totebots. Also, with a bit of tweaking, you could definitely have a platform that lowers while moving sideways so that you can have your main base even higher from sea level.

Hey Scrapman. I watch your vids all the time but never leave a comment. These last few creations that you try and mimic are really interesting and quite entertaining keep it up. I have a suggestion from the last 2 creations. How about a mash up where the "Simple task hardest way possible" passes a cart between 2 opposing machines and then have your "stamper" pick up the cart and place it on some sort of loading mechanism to place it back onto the first platform to recycle the process. I hope this makes sense to you. but essentially a perpetual motion machine that moves a cart across them all? hope you hear this.

I think this can be done with scrap mechanic's build grid. I believe the important measurements are that the green and yellow are equal and the orange is half the length. Given all of that is true and each of the lines has the same gradient i think it should work. So it might actually be easier to start with the green and yellow, build them at 45degrees say 11 long on the diagonal, and then build the orange 6 long on the diagonal, then connect the yellow and green with the blue. making sure the platform is connected to it's center.

my only point to make in these is that the start and end points of every line just have to be put in the right spot. the shape of the static arm that connects those two points does not matter. you could ignore making "straight" beams and just do L shaped arms to connect the points and as long as they are on different layers, they wont interfere with each other

You should see if you can build the mechanisms in a different position before you start. If you built it in the position at one end of its motion you could see that the green and blue bars would both be vertical, that could maybe make it easier to build. Edit: you mostly did it by getting the blue one parallel, but it maybe wasn’t the best position.

What an interesting creation. Yeah, I understand the same motion could have been accomplished with a simple piston, but I don't think the motion is what the main focus of the contraption was. In Minecraft among the redstone community, there are contraptions known as "hipster" contraptions. I don't know if those are still around, but in the past, "hipster" builds were a trend where you would build a contraption where all of the redstone components (pistons, wires, input methods, sometimes) were hidden underground so that no messy redstone components were visible above ground. I believe this contraption was made to conceptualize a similar idea but with that smooth, linear motion as the result, instead of a 2x2 piston door >_
