Welcome to another episode of Trailmakers! Last episode I attempted to build a drift car ( • The Futuristic Drift C... ), it was was kind of ok. But a lot of you left good tips in the comments on how to improve it, so I thought it might be fun to go through your comments and combine all the tips you gave to create a much better version of the drift car, and this is the result!

About Trailmakers:
In the toughest motoring expedition in the universe, you and your friends will build your own vehicles to cross a dangerous wasteland. Explore, crash horribly, use your wits to build a better rig, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find on your way.
Welcome to the Ultimate Expedition!
Journey over grueling mountains, hazardous swamps, and bone-dry deserts on a distant world far from civilization - it is just you, your fellow adventurers and the amazing, jet-powered hover-buggy you built yourself. Explore, crash your vehicle, build a better one, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find along your way.
Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.
Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.
Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.
Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

Angle the front and back wheels a little (front more than back). I mean vertical angle If you put new tires on the rwd goes away so you have to disconnect the engines with the front wheels ( I know you already kinda know this but just don't forget) For steering angle: about 50 max and STEERING HELP OFF

The reason that you couldn't drift in rear wheel drive is because you need a breaking system, so that the rear wheels would drop speed for a second, then spin somewhat fast.

Scrapman, to make it slightly easier when you initiate the drift kinda start turning the opposite way you want to go then turn in tight to give a little fishtail motion. something else, maybe tune the back suspension to be softer then the front. I find it much easier to come out of a drift with it that way.

More traction in the front, an angle to the wheels (bottom side out), high Toque (don’t think you need horse power as much), take the “front spoiler” and make it a lip for the car, awd (mostly fwd), use a break system, and that is all I recommend with the knowledge I have.

In order to drift, since you don't have handbrake, slow down just ever so slightly before the turn, so you can give power to the back wheels and make them kick out and start drifting, I personally use wheels with moderate traction on all terrains, and the front suspension stiffness has to be a bit softer than the back, so that it can really compress on the brake and get better traction. And also use 4wd for better control and stability
@jakubpollak2067
@jakubpollak2067 5 жыл бұрын
15.28 That was the best configuration of power delivery and tires position Rear wheels need to spin, so high speed engine seems fine, also your FRONT engines helps you recover from spin, so more TORQUE on front wheels can help you too Weight distribution is important too, start from balanced then change it sligthly

I also have some info when it comes to drifting, before you enter the turn you let off the gas and as you're turning left, punch it and turn your wheels to the right and that should kick the back end around and into a drift, especially on dirt.

Front wheel drive, rear wheel steering, make the rear wheels angle/chamfer toward the direction that you are drifting through (outside of curve), keep high traction wheels in front, low in back, assign a motor group to the front and the back rather than using blank weights, that way you can fine tune the power better while also getting the weight you can also try engine type combos with this, Potentially you could mimic having NOS by adding a booster somewhere Use a sliding bar/piston set up to shift your weights/engines and stuff to the inner curve side when going into a turn, since you have it set up already at that point you can make the tires angle outward during straight aways at a lesser angle to help stability Make sure to put wedges in front of the engine block, the drag messes you up a bit, that or design the car to have a drag stream down the middle (above, through, and below the car) so that it helps auto stabilize after a drift) You want to make your front tires have better contact than the back so softer suspension up front compared to the back can help You could build your own track out on the water that would be far better than the current track zones. It can be an anchored platform leading up to land, the only downside is im not sure how to change surface types much :-/ The rear wheels should likely be wider than the front by just a bit, however 3 wheel variants (front or back triangle) also work fairly well if done right, though they have much more complex mechanics

ConnorSinclairCavin why would you put fwd and rear steering that would just defeat the purpose of even drifting because your just steering
@ConnorSinclairCavin
@ConnorSinclairCavin 5 жыл бұрын
Talan Parrish actually you would still be able to drift just fine, however by having the front end locked into a straight forward pull you gain anti tail stability post turn as well as a far more directionally sound thrust. As for the steering it allows you to align the vehicle with the starting drift as well as control the exact drift path, however you will still be drifting, just drifting under control. Additionally since the power is in the front it will shift the car forward and raise the back just a little as the turn happens causing the rear drift to happen cleaner. Added bonus the front power and rear steering makes dust traps almost powerless against you
@anonimaus1618
@anonimaus1618 5 жыл бұрын
I think Trailmakers has a form of inbuilt ABS so that all the cars can take turns somewhat properly whether they are rear, front or 4 wheel drive. That's why the back wheels were kicking out easier when you have more power in the front, the game wants to make your front wheels a driveable pulling force and the ABS makes them controllable, while the back aren't powered as much and therefore act almost like a trailer fishtailing behind a towing car, preventing the differential and ABS from self correcting you because it doesn't have the necessary power to do so.
@anonimaus1618
@anonimaus1618 5 жыл бұрын
This would also explain why you lose so much speed by the end of the drift and why you weren't able to make it perform short controlled drifts even when you had so much power going to the back.

To make the car go on a straighter angle, I suggest using those power wings. I remember a creation in the Steam Workshop where to turn, you have to fight the power wings causing the straightening to turn. The power wings, in turn, make the car driftier since they are AMAZINGLY good at their job at turning cars & keeping planes up. Just give the servos less range otherwise you might spin out & crash.

Having speed sensors facing left and right to help counter steer automatically helps a lot. There fincky to tune but make a world of difference on keyboard. Also using the small wings for side force will help with recovery. The reason FWD is better is how tailmakers handles traction, while normally once a tire reaches it grip limit thats it, but with TM even thou the wheel is slipping side ways drive is literally pulling your car the direction the wheels are facing, also why just rear wheel dive sucked, now if the rear wheels could steer you would get the same effect. Another tip would be to add a hover engine to the back to mimic a hand brake by momentarily reducing rear traction when you press space/ button of choice

try to tuck the front spoilers under the bumper, just an aesthetic change all to help you get out of turns, try adding the wings back, in but instead of turning them have them fold from parallel to the car to be perpendicular - this will not affect the drifting capabilities of the car as you can fold them up when you are drifting (when you press either "A" or "D" using a or gate

Well this turned out to be great XD Was not expecting that front wheel power to be so effective since usually just makes you spin out irl (it's possible to drift a front wheel but more dangerously unreliable) I guess in this game it just uses that to give it more whip angle and then increasing the catch the back to counter... Hmm Wonder if something can be done with this, also kinda curious to see how the car reacts with the thin wheels
@cuberznl

Also the game counts it as 1 thing not the wheels separated and you don’t hit the brakes in this game normally you need to hit the brakes to get the weight to the front and then you will drift better but this is just directional

The thing is with drifting is that when you are about to drift,you would turn the steering 35° fully right?but that got you oversteered the car. My idea is somehow to get the wheel to steer less but no to full 35° to the other direction after the first half of the drift to correct the car orientation and prevent it from oversteering too much.

Drift cars have two different suspension setups. A loose and a stiff setup. Stiff setups use more throttle control and this is also the reason it pulls one of the front wheels up off the ground. Loose setups need more throttle in general to keep the wheels spinning and its also a super smooth ride.

At around 18:50 U had a really good setup, but going into the corner u were understeering, because you had to much speed. For drifting you want to oversteer (traction loss in the rear because of a high power input aka pedal to the metal). When your car starts oversteering you want it to turn into the corner on its own and take back controll, once its in the slide

I think you should add thrusters for speed If there are cylinders you could replace them with the wheels for less grip

scrapman most drift cars have negative camber. also, the reason front wheel drive was working better is you were dragging the rear end of the car.also. if you can add a button to lock the rear tires.

Add bulldog engines that individually power the opposite wheels in the front? Turning left triggers right wheel and vice versa?

If you attach the spoiler strait to the wheels it will make downforce without moving the body

Some part of a the reason why you were flipping was that your not counter turning when your drifting What counter drifting is, is that you're turning the wheels in the way you're drifting so you don't flip over

Ok it makes total since for it to drift better with more power to the front wheels if you want to test it you could take a string and attach it to one end of a stick and align them on a surface perpendicular (assume the end of the stick is the front of the vehicle and the direction of the stick is the angle of steering even though its 90 degrees) now pull the string notice the back of the stick will swing (like a drift) I'm not an expert but I dont think the complete goal of drifting is to spin out the back tires but to slide the back tires it's just useful to spin out so that when you come out of the drift you speed right back up your concept of spinning out works better for starting a drift or donut from a stol

I know I'm late to the party and I know the game is both early access and still a game, but I'm not sure if it's a controlled drift if you're doing it with only 2 wheels in a 4 wheeled vehicle. It's working for you, but that inner side is lifting up and forcing all the weight onto the outer side. I'd almost wonder what would happen if you had more power to the front wheels on some kind of logic and a kind of gyro stabilizer to keep all 4 wheels on the ground. Here's my thought process. Since the game doesn't have an e brake but you still need the back end to swing out naturally, if you had a sudden burst of power go to the front wheels with more grip then the back wheels would get dragged along for the ride in a sense. Meaning they become subject to centrifugal force during a turn (when the extra power should be applied up front) and the back should, in theory, swing out. When you deactivate the power, the power would equalize making getting out of the drift easier. The stabilizer would also help and hurt the drift in the sense that you'd be able to get out of it relatively easier, but getting into it would be harder. It seems like the drift starts when the car leans over onto 2 wheels. This could mean you need more weight in the back to compensate for this, since the "math" behind the game physics would suggest that the current weight of your car going around a turn on all 4 wheels is not enough for the 2 rear wheels to lose traction but it is enough when it's all thrown on to 1 on those wheels and 1 front wheel is enough to power it through. Just ideas and thoughts way too late for this build.

When you have racing wheels in the front there is more control in the front then the back and with regular wheels in the back their’s less traction in the so the back will swing the way your going
