Your tree has a lot of problems. First it was planted too deep. You'll notice it goes into the ground like a telephone pole. That's a very debilitating condition because bark that is underground begins to rot, effectively cutting off the minute tubules in the cambium layer (the growth medium) which begins to starve the tree. Second, it appears to have been the victim of a lightning strike. When there is a disruption in the bark the tree begins to have problems feeding itself, and in this case, since it's already got nutritional deficits from being planted too deep, this is just another complicating factor. Third, that wound is OLD. The tree has already tried to heal some of the damage, (the rolled edge you see on the rim of the wound is called callus, and it's not making much headway) but trees heal through a process called compartmentalization which, with a wound like this one, takes literally years. Since it takes so long, the exposed wood begins to suffer from insect incursions, woodpecker damage, and rot. Since you didn't show the canopy it's hard to say if it is suffering, but usually when a tree becomes structurally weak like this one, it's not long for this world. Sorry.

Lightening strike was in my thoughts too! Foresters in the UK would never have one for heating logs as they say the molecules in the wood were altered by the lightning strike and it wouldn`t burn so well!

@@ScrapPalletMan I think you should definitely listen to the commenter here. Seems to know a lot. However, I saw no mushrooms on the tree or around the ground. We have MANY hundred year old trees on our property. When they weren't long for this world, mushrooms always started growing on it and around the ground where it grew before they died. I didn't see any of that. Only part of it may be hollow. The other part could be healthy. But, the weakness of that one part may eventually cause the whole thing to die. We had one fall years ago that we had no idea was sick. It looked fine. It fell and barely missed the house and a vehicle but. took out the power line.. It was hollow in the main trunk and had a giant bee hive in it. It had unalive birds and squirrels inside that part of the trunk. I guess the bees didn't like quests. LOL It is VERY expensive to have a tree or trees taken down. Ask me how I know. NOT. I feel for you.

Paul About your tree, I think that though your pocket says ouch No it would be better to have it taken out. Because the bark has been disrupted the tree can not feed itself properly. If your wire test is as bad as you say about to the center of the trunk and coming out muddy like you tree is not structurally sound. Looks like it may have been hit by lightning or damaged by being struck by the top of a garbage height truck during an accident. We had a maple tree that had an injury the same as that at our house. We thought oh it is still growing and will stand firm. (I am someone who fits for the environment and the need for trees. We have lived here for 18 yrs and last week we had a freak storm cell come through or town/city. No tornado here but our tree came down and hit the corner of our house! Needless to say our pockets are really complaining now. My suggestion to you is have it cut down and do it before your fence goes up. Better to pay for the removal now then the removal and home/roof/auto damages. Thanks for taking us along and for your prayers. See ya next time. ✌💖🙏

As far as the tree, I would cut lower limbs and get some tree paint, seal the holes with some sort of filler and then paint over the area so the tree will heal. That tree needs to come down. The big concern is branches breaking and falling on someone of the entire tree coming down into hour home during z storm. While your pocket book may say no it would be easier if you take it down before the fence is built and I’m sure you don’t want to build your fence then have it damaged by branches of the tree falling on it.

I had gastric bypass but, you still have to diet and exercise and do the right things. I still eat my goal weight amount of protein (if you want to weigh 145 lbs, you eat 145 grams of protein) that’s hard to do when you have a teeny tiny stomach. You drink that gallon of water. You cannot drink that water within 30 minutes of eating. So it really does come down to portion control. Had I known this before surgery, I would never had the surgery.

Great video ,,,, I believe your tree is a Box Elder . They have a tendency to rot down the middle. They are a soft wood & yours looks like it has been struck by lightning ( thus, the split bark) the lightning damage has prob killed the heart wood & the bark continues to live enough to nourish the limbs . The tree is weak & prob will come down in the near future. Either have it removed professionally or at least have your home owners insurance premium paid up. Sorry I didn't have better news.

"Are you gonna get a set of white-wall tires?" - Billy Joel's Still Rock and Roll to Me. Forget breathing soup, I can't even walk too well in it. (eyyuch) And need carbs in quantity to move at all. The tree looks healthy...now, but one good storm and she's a goner. The bark is where all the water and nutrients travel up to the branches, but the rotten part is what holds the tree up. Since that's rotten, one good storm or wind blowing the wrong way and it's in your yard. Maybe on your house. I'd take it down.

Still working on your compilation video, Paul. My attention span gets jammed up with longer videos. The step stool chair was from the 1950s and one my Gramma had in her kitchen. The tree is a tricky decision and there are pros and cons. The tree is still thriving evidenced by the leaves still growing, but I would be concerned about weather bringing it down and possibly injuring someone or something. On the flip side, that tree is preventing a car from the parking lot taking a nosedive onto your property. You’ll make the right decision. How’s the beautiful Olivia doing? 🥰🥰🥰

The Box elder or Manitoba maple is well past it's time. Those holes are from cerambycidae larvae that live in decaying wood , so really there is only 2 inches of solid wood on the outside.( no structure strength) With no fences in the way time to remove, as cost go up for any issues in dropping it later. It can be reached with a bucket truck so cost is not as much as a climbing job.

Paul, If you can stick wire into the trunk of that tree, I'd have it taken down. The structural integrity of that tree is NOT sound. I know the tree looks alright now but I wouldn't trust it. It looks as if it was struck by lightening. We had a tree taken down on our property that I called the " Keebler Elf tree" because it was hollow inside. Squirrels were running in and out of it. When the canopy was cut off that tree the tree cutter guy could move it like a loose tooth. When the trunk was cut in 3 sections, the trunk inside only had a one inch diameter of wood left inside. Not good, sound or stable. The three sections of the trunk each thudded and shook the ground as they were feld BUT that tree could have killed someone walking on the front sidewalk or fallen through the middle of our house. The canopy of the tree looked beautiful BUT the trunk was hollow and an accident waiting to happen. The tree was probably 75 years old our tree guy estimated BUT it just wasn't sound anymore. It cost a good amount of money to have it taken down and neighbors were upset with us BUT once anyone walking by saw the inside of that tree trunk they knew we had done the right thing. People love trees but they can look good but be very dangerous. Please have that tree removed. Its an accident waiting to happen.
