DVD's are an easy find when trash picking hard rubbish piles.
Today I scrap out a bunch of DVD's, Set Top Boxes, Satelite & Cable boxes to see what's inside and what's good for gold recovery.
This video is to help newbie scrappers to get a bit of an understanding of how I scrap out stuff but more importantly, how I think about boards for gold recovery vs selling boards as scrap, it's a long video but it's the way I like to learn, by going over things repeatedly, so that's how I teach.
Keep scrapping & Have fun!
Scrapping tools, safety gear, metal melting furnaces, crucibles and ingot moulds that I use or recommend.. www.amazon.com/shop/ewasteben

I love scrapping cable boxes and DVD players too. I think the only downside to it, for me. They go to quick. For you, Ben that's good, you have 30+ when you do them. I pick up 3 or 4 at the most in one day. And I can't wait so I scrap them out, and I'm done in 10 minutes. GREAT VIDEO BEN! 👍👍

Hi Pete, John here, I would really like to know how or to whom I can I can sell the items you've mentioned. I've thrown at least a half a garbage bag of them away. I would seriously consider accumulating if I had a general direction to locate a buyer.

@@johnjcuevas5853 Morning John. I just put stuff on eBay with a buy it now only option. It can take a while to move this but once in a while someone will want some plastic gears or the small steel rods that run the dvd reader etc. I find printers have a lot of parts that can sell, even the glass if you can get it off. Springs, motors, it’s all sellable. Once people know you are selling this stuff, they will contact you privately. Then you can sell cheaper which is good for the customers and gets rid of eBay fees. Try aiming at the arts and crafts side of eBay. Good luck John. Regards

Thanks Ben for sharing your scraping adventures and knowledge. I like how you have the ability to put your trash on the side of the road for pickup. I watched your videos as you took computers away from school, a whole bunch. The appearance is great, they still have to work and work, and they have already been written off as scrap. We have a little bit different, the computers work until the last 10-15 years, then they break down and only then they send x for scrap.

Ben, it absolutely *killed* me to hear you say at 6:30 that the two things you save are the power board and digital processing, and you leave the actual optical disk drive. To me that is the highest thing of value by far; though I use those mostly as parts for DIY projects (you can do SO MUCH with them). PS, love your videos, I do a bit of ewaste scrapping of my own, but you are an absolute legend sir!

One of the scrap yards I use pays you for different grades of board and it can ad up quick dollar wise. I did start letting my nephew help me scrap some stuff this year and he enjoyed it, he is 8, I let him use my power screwdriver and he loved it. Our low grade board pay 15 cents a pound and it goes up from there, the best is the motherboards which pay over 3 dollars a pound more than the copper bright. So, yeah it pays to sell the boards.

But he likes to disassemble the Soviet technique of the times of the Soviet Union more precious metals in it, gold, paladium. He doesn’t like gold in his imported equipment. You can give a couple of hard drives for 500 gigabytes of type sat, and a couple of memory bars for ddr3 for 2 or 4 gigabytes, if you don’t have 500 for 250 or 320 gigabytes, and if you had one tirabyte it wouldn't be bad. Computer components in our country are very expensive, to buy a new hard disk is not realistic. I myself am from Ukraine, Donetsk region, the city of Kramatorsk. We do not throw things like that.

I wanted to ask a question, in terms of processing network cords, cables, wires. How do you recycle them, ie how to separate the insulation. For example, I used to burn in a fire, but this processing option is harmful for the environment at a given time. When firing, smoke is emitted But this method is the most effective.

Hello! We can burn in a campfire, near the garage I spread a fire, firewood, doused the arson with gasoline for 20 minutes and it was ready, I burned the burned insulation into a ball and order. In insulation, wires and cables are not accepted, only firing or manually cut with a knife, but it is long and tedious.

Please don't take this as a criticism because I generally enjoy watching your videos. Do you ever calculate the true value of the items you are scrapping? Because to the casual observer, it seems the labor cost of the disassembly and sorting of parts far exceeds the value of the parts you salvage. Unless you don't value your own labor
