Scrapping Silver knife handles, is it worth it? - Thar be Treasure #8

I've always wondered how much silver a knife handle would yield so I took time to break a couple of them apart and we learn whether it makes a difference in value, or if it is better to just sell them to my refiner as is. Also, this will give you a rough idea of how much to value them when you are buying silverware in a lot.

Just cut down the length of the handle with the Dremel and peel the sterling off the resin. Gonna save you ton of time. Love the series keep em coming!

I was thinking along those lines. I wonder how much you lose from the cut. I may try one that way and weigh the other once peeled.

I use a hammer to break up what ever is inside the handle and then pull the blade out.

yup you lose a bit, but use your Dremel and a thin disk, and cut a slit from top to bottom, a lot quicker and easier.

Take a retractable razor knife and slice down the whole length and the silver will peel off in one piece.

I can't for the life of me sell any of my sterling as replacements even when they look like they've never been used. And I am only asking $1/gram. I end up having to scrap them. No one buys sterling cutlery in Canada.

I tend to agree. I have had a couple patterns that do really well. But beyond those scrap seems to be the way once you factor in eBay fees. Selling online doesn’t make much sense to me. YMMV.

Take a hammer before you cut it and pound it to break up the Bakelite or sand then once you cut the handle it will all come out

There has to be a way to separate the blade from the handle and clean out the handle without damaging the silver handle. I've seen the cutest bell pendants made from the end of a sterling knife handle.

To separate the handle from the blade, you heat the the joint with a blowtorch. Then you have to ream out the cement material inside the knife handle.

What did the large carving forks handle end up weighing?

Unfortunately, it was such a bear, I didn't end up taking it apart. I tried cutting if off and just couldn't. Ended up selling it as it was.
