This is the final (Part 3) episode of the (Scratch Build) Cinder Block Warehouse. I will be painting it in a later episode after the Utility Pole build and some track ballast work. Meanwhile, the comprehensive build coverage of River Road continues with the rest of the scene like fleshing out details and composing the rear building flats to complete the scene.

I don't like any loose substrate on a layout because the debris gets ingested by models, etc. Dusty has alot of respect for the layout because I raised her as a kitten on the Glover Road shelf layout. ;-)

I felt the same way about the concept initially. After I watched the actual prototype operations here several times I knew I had to model it. The location is actually made for a shelf layout like this, especially with the overpass as a divider, etc. The more I work on it the more I feel confident and inspired about it. There is something about prototype modeling, even when it is freelanced somewhat, but actually capturing the feel and emotion of the scene in this case.

There is a growing tendency in the hobby to leave the back sides of buildings incomplete, based on the assumption that the back side will never be seen. In my opinion, this means that you'll never be able to move the building to another layout, or even to another spot on the layout. I'm pleased that you chose to spend significant time on the hidden side of this build. I know: you didn't model the cinder block construction, but the back side of the building has enough interest without the cinder block detail. whereas the cinder blocks provide almost all of the interest on the side of the building facing the tracks. Anyway, another fantastic build; and I'm looking forward to seeing how you build those amazing utility poles!
@boomerdiorama
@boomerdiorama Жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree. On the other hand, if you watched the "Diner Build" I went to great lengths to model every side in details (brick etc.) The Diner may still play a role on the layout (section three) so the option to display any side is there. Furthermore. since the Warehouse is painted with Tamiya Acrylics, I can easily wipe off the back side (with IPA - Isopropyl Alcohol) and fill in the spaces with block if need be. Thanks for sharing and supporting the channel! Cheers ~ Boomer. 😁👍

I try to model all sides of my buildings, even if not seen. The reason is, I know layouts get taken down and buildings repurposed all the time. If I use a building in a new location, more of the back might be seen, or even all sides, or the back might be the better choice facing out in the new location. I like things more modular.

You're blessed to have a well stocked hobby shop where you can handle and select materials and supplies as best fit your need. There is one hobby store in town and the materials available in scratch build is missing. I have to buy online and that is hit and miss. If you don't mind, please tell me what type and thickness of wood you used as a subframe for your building. Thanks.
@boomerdiorama
@boomerdiorama Жыл бұрын
It's 1/4" Baltic Birch. You don't have to use wood if you don't want to. I do it for several reasons : Longevity and Rigidness to avoid inevitable warping from humidity. If the building is small there is no need for wood sub-structure - just use plastic to beef it up.

Dear Boomer, very interesting details. Love the way you did that roof lip detail. That kind of cover with the roll formed lip at the bottom of the cover truly stands out. Did a lot of zinc work, roofs, walls, gutters and covers, in my heyday as a plumber. That particular detail is called an ‘English roll form’ in Dutch ‘Engelse kraal.’ The kraal would normally translate to ‘bead,’ in this case it’s a roll form. Awesome how the building comes together. Definitely am looking forward to a camera angle into the back alley. Cheerio

The Diner may see a role on section three. It doesn't fit on section two. Section two is devoted to IPEX plastics which is a primary industry ( and reason) for SRY Rail Link, apart from the Marine & Auto Industry (no room for auto racks yard) on Annacis Island. When I get to section three it will be more rural and I can "whimsically" introduce the Diner - I hope. Cheers.
