I've been busy working on several buildings for the street scene in the corner of the layout. They've taken a long time to put together but in this video I get several buildings closer to completion and construct a new one. I also found some time to add some much needed small details to the general scenery in the surrounding area.

Nice one again Richard. Our local scrap yard back then had the 1500 watt tungsten tube lights, very bright white light in various areas that were left on all night.

It's amazing how cathartic it is to watch the bleak backdrops of one's youth being recreated in amazing detail. I almost feel like I'm back there, trudging home through the empty, sodium -lit streets, long after the last tube has gone. The lights shine cross the valley, The wind blows up the alley...

It's funny, aside from the cars driving on the wrong side, this reminds me of places in Covington, Kentucky, USA, when I was a kid looking at the trains on the overpasses next to the houses and factories. Trains are universal. TY for the post. Thanks for the memories.

Another great update. Have a think about the the scrap yard lighting. Possibly a couple of spot lights on a scaffold pole with a wire drapped between them and back to the building for the electricity supply. I can't see them digging the ground and putting in proper cabling and ducting system. You might want to look at a light post outside John Menzies frontage as street lighting is installed on the outside of bends to highlight the kerb and bend in the road. Keep up the great work 🤌

The opening sequence is really quite something. The view down the street with the demu visible on the bridge at the end was gold star. What about a single decker bus and one car with manual on/ off led lights ( one or two leds with Perspex rod to the outside to conduct the light) and then you’ve got a last bus and a taxi or a shift worker going home when the roads are empty. Just a thought as your road rail illumination is very impressive

Richard, Have you thought of using self adhesive copper foil for your lighting connections inside the buildings? It comes in a roll about 9" wide (I haven't measured the length, but it is a quite long roll). You just cut off a strip (about 5mm wide), peel off the backing paper, stick it to the inside walls and solder your connections to it. Once painted, being less than 0.5mm thick, its almost invisible. For other wires inside the building, have you considered using enamelled copper "transformer" wire. It comes in various thicknesses, but you can use some of the thinnest, as an LED only takes a very little current. It would be about the same thickness as the wires on your street lights. Again, almost invisible.
@EverardJunction
@EverardJunction 11 ай бұрын
I use the enameled wire quite a lot but on buildings I've found it's easily snapped when lifting the building off the layout. However the copper roll is certainly worth a try, I look into it. Cheers

Absolutely amazing, superb upgrade, i drove trains for BR throughout "Your Period" and recognise so many features from all over. I thought you might have put a street market on that empty plot, but it just keeps getting better and better, each time you let us visit. The houses lighting, in fact the lighting overall is BRILLIANT. I peered through so many windows during night driving, sometimes wondering about all those individual lives that might live there.

Rather than wires for LEDs in buildings were it may be possible to see them, I tend to use self adhesive copper tape, sometimes covered with 'wall paper', and meeting the LED with very close cut leads. For the scrap yard, might I suggest three guys standing around a 44 gallon drum filled with burning scrap lumber to keep warm...It would offer an entirely different lighting source without being out of place either day or night...

Perhaps that central "square" could turn into a park or playground area. Some trees, grass with paths worn down to bare dirt in it, the usual blowing newspapers, and some playground equipment. The advantage is that you won't be blocking sight lines nearly as much as with a large building.

Nice wor,just a thought about the two shops. You may have already thaught about the back alley between the shops and the cannal, but a number of dustbins and crates staked up at the back of the shops will look quite authentic. I also think there is a lack of a fire escape for the upper floors of the shops, especially the shops closer to the railway. Best regards, l really have enjoyed watching your 2nd railway take shape.

I always look forward to your videos, and as usual this one did not disappoint. Plus I picked up an important tip which I had forgotten from a previous video--using orange transparent paint to lower the color temperature of LEDs. My layout is quite small (1 x 6 feet) and is lit overhead by a single strip of LEDs set in a wood inside corner molding. I just went to the trouble and expense of switching out a "cool white" strip for a "white" one to lower the color temperature in my photos. Perhaps I could have avoided this using paint instead! In any case, I will now experiment on a test strip by applying paint to, say, every third LED to see if the mixture has a more pleasing effect. Cheers from Wisconsin!

The paint trick can work really well. Can take a few applications and sometimes you might need to rub it off and start again. For creating that sodium lighting effect I've found it to be very useful. Cheers

some lovely work there, small details make the scenery really 'pop'. a couple of suggestions, Alarm boxes, maybe on some houses and certainly on the shops and offices, and maybe a big 'To Let' sign, the large double sided ones up high on one or more of the offices, ( that would save lighting and interior fitments too)

Probably one of the best layouts I have ever seen. This guy puts in an awful lot of effort into his layout and it really shows. No detail is too small. When I see this, it reminds me of my childhood, because I grew up in the inner city and this is very familiar to me. Utterly sublime. EDJ is amazing.

Wow!! That is some intro, Richard. All the work you are doing certainly brings the layout to life. My only additional thought would the areaat this time have had telegraph poles or underground cabling? Great video as always and thanks for posting. Cheers, Bob

Really enjoyed watching your layout grow more detailed and, well English, with the modern era buildings. I'm looking forward to seeing what you add in the empty space. Maybe that most English of buildings, a church surrounded by pavement, which would be a definite change from the industrial buildings, but full of interesting roof lines and details like St. John's in Morriston.

Great to see you are doing well with your layout. I’ve been watching you for about 11 years starting with your how to videos. I love getting to catch up on these again as I haven’t seen one in 4 years.
