Let's look at why both male and female leopard geckos sometimes get quite restless this time of year, constantly scratching at the glass, digging and sometimes not eating. We'll also look at what you can do to stop this behaviour (if possible).

How many weeks does she go off food. My female lost so much of her tail weight. She was off food for over 4 weeks and she finally ate a couple mealworms, then a week later laid two eggs, which was 3 days ago. She doesn't want to eat yet though. I'm wondering at what point I should take her to the vet.

This video was very helpful. I am very thankful that you take time to make videos like this as they are extremely useful and it’s difficult to find information like this elsewhere. I have been a leopard gecko owner for 6 years now and I’ve known that behaviour like this is not uncommon in female geckos. However I was always curious as to why my male leopard gecko sometimes shows similar behaviour traits around this time period.

I had mine in a 40 gallon terrarium with lots of enrichment but it still wanted out every night...and i always obliged. It was just wanting to explore. You can set up a 'playpen' area with different enrichment, with cardboard to fence it off. It is something new for it and a change. I had to rehome mine finally because I really felt guilty about this and it was just too much work to keep it happy. I think in the wild these animals have vast areas to explore and are very inquisitive especially to seek mates.

I was just noticing this about my gecko Nugget again as well ! as soon as it got hotter here he started to get sm more active its like he wants attention. I dont handle him much cause I dont trust him or my super shaky clumsy hands enough (he will be chill for like 10 seconds and then try to jump away mf thinks he is a kangaroo) often i will just change a small thing in his tank for a bit/ move it around or add someting new so he can be busy exploring whats different. Especially stuff to climb on and under with different textures too that seems to help! My geckos tank is also in my bedroom i built it out of wood so its not glass all around and i made him some curtains for the night so that when i am awake late he doesnt get too much light when its supposed to be dark, which also seems to make him scratch the glass less late at night/in the early morning. the only thing I am a little worried about is that he is currently not eating much unless i sit down for a while and keep putting a wiggling worm right in front of his face EVENTUALLY he will get an apetite and eat. This guy does NOT want to move his little reptile ass (?) for shit unless its bungee jumping ig. which is usually fine cause i have the time to be able to do this but im going on a trip almost all of july and I thought it would be fine if my brother who will check in every day , just switches out some mealworms and puts them in his dish so he can eat out of it himself cause i dont trust anyone with feeding Nugget by themselves Im kinda paranoid about it. He usually does eat some worms by himself sometimes so im hoping if he really gets hungry he wont be a diva about it. Youd think if they have so much energy theyd also be more hungry but I guess not ?

I noticed my daughters 2 year old gecko (F) is pretty chill over all. But, in the evening she comes up to the glass or likes to 'play' with us by tracking us (my daughter calls it tag). she will try lunging (like a quick bite motion) at the glass, as well or scratching. She doesn't seem stressed or bothered either when this happens. Also, it happens whether its feeding day or not lol😅 we DO take her out a couple times a week for 15 min max for bonding time too! I'm not sure if this is her telling us something or her personality and interacting with the kiddos 😅 it's funny and she's been great with handling as well!!

Great video on leopard gecko behavior! I was wondering do you have any videos that breakdown the science on the Arcadia halogen bulbs for leopard geckos? I've seen the new Arcadia halogen deep heat projector combo pack video, and became aware that many reptile owners are not be catching onto the science behind using arcadias halogen bulbs for leopard geckos in the daytime. On some reptile forums some folk are confused and wonder why do they need the halogen bulb in the daytime when they could just use a deep heat projector with the shade dweller and just turn off the shade dweller at night?

My boy Bubba has nearly the same gradient all year round. I drop his sides about 5-10 degrees at night during the winter, but they're the same all year round for the day time. He never scratched at the glass... ever. Even when he was a pre-adult and in his 2x2x2. Especially not now in his 4x2x2. That roaming space keeps him busy. However I do notice what you say about having them out for a good deal of time, putting them back, and they're sitting at the glass looking at you like "Hey... what gives hooman?". He does that almost every time, and I've had him out for about 30 minutes. I guess he just likes me?! LOL.

I have 6 geckos, 4 females and two males. Both males keep straching at the glass at night and they will always climb on my hand and just rest there. I am not so much bothered as worried if they are lacking something. They have large bioactive tanks with lots of hides. One thing I was thinking is that they are maybe a bit cold since they enjoy resting on my hands. Both males are at the bottom shelf which makes their tank by a few degrees C colder. I am not using a night heat source, but I am thinking of switching their 50 w halogen lamps for 75 once instead...

Yeah it's very common for them to kind of ovulate, but the egg doesn't form a shell so they reabsorb it which is probably a bit better for them, they get all the resources back haha. I think Minnie might do that this year.

Okay my two babies havent eaten in a few months they went through burmation from what i thought, then ive had a few reptile store people say leopard geckos shouldnt be going through burmation??? They never loss much if any of their tail and they still both got up when i picked up their respective hides. Plus they would make angry noises when id make sure they were fine. So now theyve been awake and active a week and I havent gotten either of them to eat, I bought dubia roaches which thanks for my wallet is normally both of their favorites and they would eat even a small one, i have gotten them to eat a meal worm either. Now im starting to worry a lot. I have a light I ordered in case their bottom of the tank heater is the reason. They have both shed just fine this last week the older one finished last night toes were fine and everything. I'm going to try setting up a better warm to cool gradient for them thanks to this video and comments anything else? I just bought them special safe sand for them to dig and i did notice that dirt in the younger one's water bowl and she(?) was against the glass the first time ever just recently too.

I do think you might be onto something about the air conditioner thing. I, unfortunately for me, have a medical condition called POTs which heat intolerance is a symptom of so I tend to use air conditioners most of the year which is weird even though I do live in the desert southwest. I need to keep it cool enough that I actually have to use supplemental heating for my leopard gecko, but there's still always an obvious difference between the warm side and cool side of his enclosure and I've noticed the same thing you're talking about here.

Aw a friend of mine has that too and says the heat makes it worse. I've even noticed in myself that my blood pressure drops quite a bit in heat and I have dizzy spells. Both my male and female leopard geckos will scratch at the bins they are in but with mine it seems to be food related. Usually if they see me come to the area they are in they do it more often get excited if they think its feeding time. After feeding them they seem to stop the behavior until a few days later. I'm a first time leopard gecko owner and I've had him for about a year. I moved him from school to back home almost exactly a month ago. He really hasn't been eating for me since getting him home. He had one full (large) meal of a bunch of dubias, he took a few mealworms about a week later and then he absolutely refused (saw, investigated, stalked, and licked the bugs I put in for him and then looked away and went about his business). I thought maybe he was just being picky because he's been known to be a biiit of a picky eater in the past, so I got him some superworms which used to be his absolute favorite and he barely even started to hunt them before losing interest. So I pulled out the last stop and got him some hornworms. He ate 3 right away so I offered him another superworm (refused) and a dubia (refused) to see if there was other food he would eat if he was already in food-mode. I saved the last hornworm to see if he would eat it a different day, but the next time I offered it to him a few days later (he used to be on a Monday-Thursday-Saturday food schedule and then a Monday and Friday only because he is...Quite Chunky from when I didn't know that superworms weren't the best staple food) he refused it. I usually tong-feed him or put fast-moving insects (dubias) on their backs so he can see the movement, but they can't get away. One of the dubias managed to flip itself back over and run away which he was VERY interested in, but he's a poor hunter so it managed to hide before he could get it. I'd love to let him hunt fast-moving insects like that all the time, but, again, he's not a great hunter and my tank is very full off annoying nooks and crannies that they like to hide themselves in and are a pain to fish out. He refuses to hunt when he's out of his tank. He has refused food for me before, but that has almost always been within like a week of shedding. He has a low-power UBV, a heat lamp, and two heat mats on the hot side of his cage where he likes to hang out where it's about 85F, there's a a small dish of calcium in there for him, and I'm offering him food several times a week. He is overweight with a chunky belly and a FAT tail, so I'm not worried about him starving and I hope the UVB and Calcium in there will prevent MBD. His activity is pretty normal (he's kind of a night owl and loves to rearrange the fake plants and climb on top of his hides at night), his poop is normal (he's on stone tile so I'm not worried about impaction). He's always had a bit of a shake when he walks ever since I got him (from a friend of a friend who had him for the first three years of his life) that doesn't seem to bother him, but I always worry about making worse. He can hold himself up with his legs (though he prefers to sploot, especially on his tiles over his heat mat). How long is okay for him to be off food before I should really worry? Is there anything I can do to test to make sure it's not something more serious? Any advice is appreciated!!!
@carbon3d
@carbon3d Жыл бұрын
If I'm gathering this correctly he's 4? If that's true, and he's "overweight a little bit", he can go a good 7-10 days straight without eating, some resources say more than that (10-14 days; not sure I trust that so much though). If he has water, and calcium dish to pick at he should be fine. If he's pooping, and pee'ing. The Poo/urate combo, he's eating something, or passing still. That's great. Horn worms are good for "boosting" a feeding response. Depending on the size of them, one good sized, one day, and wait 2-3 days, then try something undusted for a test. At that age I wouldn't recommend feeding more than like a Monday then Friday schedule type thing. 3-4 days a part. Max really. Not just because of his age, but his weight too. This season as mentioned is mating season. Some males might go off of food a little bit. They're focused hard core on the "ladies". (Gotta keep that body fit! HAHA! Jk jk). I wouldn't worry too much. Do you have a scale to weight in grams? Monitor by weighing once a week during his "off the food" funk. If it's dropping 10's of grams, and there's no stool, and no eating whatsoever. I'd consider an exotic vet trip. Important things - Poo/Pee Weight Disposition Humidity/Temp You mentioned 85*F on the warm side correct? Is that 24/7? What is the Humid/Cool side like? What's the humidity/temp inside the humid hide?
@Phrancieee
@Phrancieee Жыл бұрын
@@carbon3d Thanks for the response! I'll get a scale and start keeping track. The vet I take my dogs to also does reptiles so if I get too worried, I'll definitely give them a call. I'll try an undusted hornworm!! The 85 degrees is during the day on the hot side of his cage. Right on top of the heat mat it can get up to 90 if everything's on, but both lamps go off during the night (heat mats are on all the time) so the hot side goes down to about 76 at night. Cool side is usually around 76 during the day and room temperature during the night. He has a jar half full of sphagnum moss that I mist down every time it starts to dry out a bit on the farthest corner of his tank right next to his water dish.

@@Phrancieee Well Hornworms are mostly moisture. They don't provide much nutrients. Remember that. They're bright, wiggly and enticing to eat. They are what some of us use to "excite" the feeding response. I used to rotate Mealworms, and Crickets. But Crickets are difficult to keep alive, they're stinky, noisy, and cannibals. All reasons I don't like them. So in my state (Florida) we can't have dubias, so I rotate Mealworms, and Discoid roaches. With the occasional 4-5 wax worms (once a month), and hornworms (2 medium sized every blue moon, instead of wax worms). Just to give him a snack, something like "cookies and cakes". Not "good" for him ,but he loves them still.

@@leopardgeckotalk nope. His and his alone. about the only thing that is "shared" is the tongs I use to feed them. and he death rolls those. I had to take most everything out and introduce it back slow as I was afraid he was going to hurt himself.

Oh shoot! Good to know that they lay even without being bread. It does make sense though.

My gecko hadn't eaten in about 2 2-1/2 weeks and I mentioned this to the reptile store (owner?) in my town where I buy my gecko's food. They offered to check her out for free and mentioned they knew of a reputable vet. If you buy your gecko food locally it might be worth asking someone at the shop?

I take my female out and let her climb my shoulder and just hangs with me for some time before i put her back. Almost like a signal that she wants out for a trip 😃😅

To anyone who's scared that their female leopard geckos will die of starvation; Both of mine had egg laying issues and didn't eat for almost 9 months and they're still alive and thriving, so there's no need to go into super-desperate mode if they don't eat through the summer (:

My little lady decided that scratching doesn’t get my attention (she gives me the stink eye every time because she can see me in my bed)… so she decided to dig down into her drainage fleece. 🫠 That and refusing most foods of course. Thankfully, she came out of those spring feelings two weeks ago and realised bugs are more important than boys. It’s my first year having her, so I’m hoping it’ll stay like that until next year. 😂
