Every spring/summer my messages and comments are full of people asking why their gecko is scratching at the glass, shedding more frequently, and not eating. I have covered this topic many times (links below), but here's a quick summary!

Forgot to mention that though I do say in the video that males may display similar behaviours, just slightly less intense, I have also noticed that Diego will randomly do mating displays, where he'll wag the tip of his tail super quick, sounds like a mini propeller! He'll mostly do this randomly at night, but he has been known to do it in the middle of the day.

My Leo's, Male and Female scratch the glass to tell me they want to come out. At the moment its been every evening and even during the day for a week lol. The are both in the mood for LURVE! I thought it had peaked. My Female slept a whole day and evening, My male was still on the lookout, very upset not to see her climbing on me. But last night She had recovered her energy and was intent on getting to the ledge in front of his viv and making "slinky moves" in front of his window. LOL My female Crestie has also been making googoo eyes at my male Leo. She can see him from her Viv. She climbed down and was rubbing her head on the glass and He was too. They are all more mature this year so the behaviour is more noticeable and more prolonged.

THANK YOU for this video!! My female (13 years old!) has gone off food every November-January, whenever the weather cools. She's never laid an egg, but sheds a lot and loses a little weight (still a chunky gal). Even if this happens every year, I get so stressed when she stops eating. Nice to have this video as a reference(:

I feel relief to see that Leo’s typically act this way during this season. I was so worried because my girl has always been a good eater, and didn’t glass surf as much as she’s been doing lately and is less interested in hunting her crickets. She will be a year old in May or June. It seems like the only way to calm her is when I put my hand in for her to climb on me a bit then she hops off when she’s done with me and tends to relax more. Thank you for helping me be less of a hover copter reptile mommy.

I’ve never kept a leopard gecko, but Ive heard somewhere that it could also mean that they’re trying to get out because their cage is too small. I know that you take amazing care of your leos and give them awesome enclosures, but some people don’t. If a leos is too young to ovulate but scratching the glass, I’d advise a bigger enclosure or more time outside of the cage

Back in the beginning of February I got my leopard gecko (I’m guessing her at around 3-4 months old, birth date unknown). She has been fed mealworms her entire life so far (although appropriately dusted, I know that’s still not the best), but I’ve just now started to try and introduce her to dubias. The night before last was the first time she had ever seen one (as far as I know). I put one in her enclosure at a time to see how she would react and with the first one, she attacked it and bit it but immediately spit it out. At this point, that dubia was crippled and not moving much so she was entirely uninterested but then I put another in and she ate in no problem. After that, she wouldn’t eat anymore. Last night I tried giving her dubias again but she was completely uninterested and didn’t even seem to pay any attention to the 4 sitting around her. Granted, I put her in a separate container for feeding because the dubias were getting under her repti carpet and getting stuck so maybe that freaked her out. A couple of them managed to crawl onto her stomach and up onto her back and I think that probably spooked her as well, but I’m not sure if she’s just not a fan or if she is just gonna take some time to get used to eating something different? I put her in a separate container to feed again tonight and she wouldn’t eat. Once I put her back in her enclosure and put the dubias in there, she ate two no problem but wouldn’t eat anymore after that. In addition to all my efforts, I’ve been trying to teach her how to eat out of a dish rather than me putting insects in her enclosure (at least until I buy a different substrate, may resort to tile or cabinet liner). She hasn’t gotten the hang of that just yet either, so I’m not sure if I’m changing things too abruptly and she’s stressed out, or if she just needs more time to get used to things being different. She acts perfectly fine any other time, just a little weird (and by weird I mean clueless) during feeding time. Any tips?
@fionashepley478
@fionashepley478 4 жыл бұрын
Keep trying with the dubias. You can try tong feeding as well. You can also use crickets and healthier feeder worms (silkworms and black soldier fly larvae). Definitely get rid of the carpet, it harbours bacteria. Textured tile and non-adhesive shelf liner are two good solid options. Over six months I recommend offering digging enrichment with reptisoil, organic top soil (without fertilizer or perlite, Scott’s is a good brand), or a bioactive mix. Half tile half soil is good as well

Great video! Aside from scratching on the glass and trying to surf a bit my female Luna often gets on her tree bark and jumps against the glass :( I'm very worried and I literally checked everything to be alright in her space. The only thing that's not optimal right now, is that she's on sand... And yes, I know of the danger of impaction and I already ordered some claypowder to mix it with sand and water for a safe landscape (unbeatable if you also care for asthetics). But the sand can't be the problem by itself, can it?

She‘s also been very active the past three weeks and is currently scratching at the glass of the enclosure.

Hey! I have a... maybe around 1,5 or 2-year-old female gecko and she is doing the same... I'm so worried about her😓 but her weight is I guess okay, I check it on every sunday. (3 weeks ago she was 63 g, the same at the next week, last week 62g and today she is 61g 😵 I tried warm bath too bc I thought she has impaction or something. I also threw away her (Zoo-med vita-)sand just in case because I think it's kinda risky u know (and it had painted her little toes and tail sooo much browner/darker😬)... oh and I got her some classical music and crickets sounds at night. I hope your gecko is doing well already!💕 (Btw sorry for my english mistakes, I'm not native😂😂)

so I was feeding my 2 month old leopard g and I only got her 3 days ago. We are still bonding. she eats like a sumo wrestler. I have to cut the mealworms in half for her , she went to eat one, it was a bit gooey and she made a disgusted look when it touched her face and she started to rub her head on EVERYTHING and just went round rubbing the left side of her face, and madly licking her left cheek. Obv being a new owner I find myself worrying that something's wrong as it's been a couple hours and occasionally she still rubs left side of her face on the floor/earth. Help help 💓

Thank you so much for posting about egg laying from non-breeding geckos! There is still not much information online about this. I picked up my very first leopard gecko less than two weeks ago, and last night she laid one egg. I have seen that sometimes they lay one, but more often it is two. If there are two eggs, do they lay them both on the same day? Should I expect another one soon? Should I expect multiple clutches per season? I will check her belly tonight to see if I can see another egg in there after she becomes active. Thank you!

What you do is you get a giant bucket , like 100 gallon, and throw all the plant based things ( coffee grounds, banana peel, ect and also egg shells) into a smaller bucket and when that is full throw it all into the larger bucket ( keep the big bucket outside,as is does stink) mabey add some water to it, and mix it ever day the decomposing plants should make an amazing fertilizer, and I don't know about where you live but where I live apparently there are plenty of black soldier flies and they are attracted to the rotting plants ( they end up laying their eggs in what I call compost and every time you even move a little bit of the compost plenty of black soldier fly larvae you should be waiting) but clean them off first ( compost is the plant)

My gal Waffle starts scratching and pushing on the glass for a while, and sometimes she actually does want to come out when I open it, where a lot of the time after I open the glass, she just looks out and lays down. If I put the glass back she'll start scratching again. I remove it again and she just chills near the edge, perfectly content lol --she's sending mixed messages and yeah she's greatly reduced her appetite recently, like 1 dubia roach each week sorta deal My dude Gunter hasn't eaten in a bit now. Though he definitely prefers mealworms to dubias, I currently only have and offer dubias. I would think if he gets hungry he'll eat a dubia sooner or later...if he starts loosing too much weight of course I'll get some mealworms to offer up instead They're both still healthy weights though so I'm not worried. Even though my gal is naturally pretty big (not just weight, she's pretty long too), she's currently down to 113g from her highest in November '19 of 120g (she was definitely getting a little too fat then I know, her armpits started getting that pudgy look to them). And my dude is on the small side(though maybe he's just normal compared to my Amazonian woman that is Waffle lol) and is currently down to 87g from his highest in November of 93g. Again he's barely eaten anything (like max 8 mealworms) for the last month and a half too (and been very active as well, breeding season and all I guess, it's his first season where he's mature enough I think). Waffle turned two at the beginning of this year and Gunter will be two in October I've seen the adult weight for leos quoted as being from 40-80g and I can't fathom an adult leo weighing even 60g based on the size of mine 😂 I wonder if mine have giant genes in them...I know that Waffle is a Mac Snow and Gunter is a Super Snow both from the same local place. I talked to the owners and they said that a lot of their snows were growing up pretty large as well 🤷

Hello, I bought 2 female geckos from a friend and they have lived together since birth, unfortunately they had been kept on sand until we got them and one of them was so impacted that the vet suggested it was kinder to put her down then put her through surgery that she may not recover from, we followed his advice although it broke our heart, we are now worried that our other little girl may be sad about losing her friend as they had been together for 2 years from babies, do they form bonds with each other and should we get another one to keep her company? I've had my gecko for about 2 yrs now. Got her in 2018 she was a baby. In March 2019, she became a full adult, and in mid March 2019 I noticed her doing this for the first time ever. Scratching the glass, climbing all over the tank, and not eating at all. This went on for about 3 weeks when I thought she got egg bound. So I gave her emergency food and liquid calcium for about 10 days, then about 2 weeks after she started eating normally again. I figured she was ovulating and didn't want to take the chance in case she was egg bound. As I write this, she is going through the same thing again. Hasn't eaten for 22 days I am monitoring her closely she seems to be alright hasn't lost any weight during this time.
