The fact that the main character does the smart thing by locking the door, but that action then forces her to run up the stairs like she had just been rolling her eyes at moments before, is just so good. It really encapsulates George's point about this movie intentionally pointing out horror movie tropes, and then seeing if they can get away with doing those same tropes.

@@cplaza81I think they mean in terms of tabloid celebrities. The Fonze was a national treasure, yes, but Drew Barrymore was all over the news during her adolescence (for better or for worse reasons) In modern day it’s like Scream 6 having Courteney Cox as the veteran celebrity but Jenna Ortega is the hot young magazine selling name.

i always loved how this movie handled billy. because it counts on you having watched horror movies your entire life and therefore considering billy to be the obvious choice for the killer. from second 1 he appears you already suspect him, and he is so creepy that you cant help to think he is a red herring the movie is using to fool you. that plus little stuff to make you think he is innocent (like the phone call while he was in jail, or the fact that he couldnt reach the window that fast) that automatically mean nothing when you reach the actual twist of the movie wich is that the killer is actually 2 people. genius

"My mom and dad are gonna be so mad at me!" Definitely one of the best lines of all time. Wes Craven directed both "Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Scream", thus the Easter egg with the janitor dressed up like Freddy Krueger. The janitor's name was Fred and it was actually Wes Craven as the Janitor in a cameo! Also, the writers wanted the audience to expect the obvious, that Billy was the killer, which he was, but what they didn't want us to expect was the fact that there were TWO killers. That's the plot twist.

At the time this movie was released teen slasher movies were a cheesy thing of the past, modern audiences were just too sophisticated to buy the old cliched tropes, or so we thought. This movie was a sort of tongue-in-cheek love letter to the genre that sparked a box office resurgence of teen horror films.

My favorite thing of this movie (aside from the fact that it's like an elaborate murder mystery) is the fact that the killer is always fallible. They aren't unstoppable killing machines like the Terminator, they're just psycho kids. So people actually fight back, like Tatum smacking him in the face with the freezer door and chucking bottles at him, Sydney sliding out of his grip in the bathroom, etc. It makes the whole thing feel more real, but also kind of funny.
@hulkslayer626
@hulkslayer626 9 ай бұрын
Also makes you wonder if Sydney didn't get away the first time, the movie would have essentially ended very quick and their plan wouldn't have been very dramatic. Kinda almost like they intentionally didn't want to kill her the first time if ya think about it...

I love how George predicted the two killer twist halfway through but didn't think it was possible. Yeah, Billy is so obviously a bad guy, but because he has plausible deniability for at least half the killings and you don't expect there to be an accomplice, you just think he has to be innocent somehow.

Matthew Lillard doesn't get nearly enough love for this role. That scene in the video store really shows off his acting skills. When Stu gets hit with the phone, that was actually an accident. Skeet meant to throw it behind Matthew's head so the phone landed behind Stu in the frame but that didn't happen. So Matthew saying his line about hitting him with the phone was ad-libbed and kept cause Wes loved it and found it funny. If you watch it more than once and watch Stu and Billy's facial expressions, you can tell that they are the killers especially when Billy pops up at the party in the front door, gives Stu a cue that everything is ready and that he took care of Tatum. Stu and Billy were also in constant communication cause Billy says to Stu "I thought you said she was dead" talking about Gale running her van into the tree.

The biggest shock in the movie Is within first 15 min they killed off an A list celebrity. This scream was inspired by a real life murder The Gainsville riper who killed college girls that looked like his mother. Drew Barrymore was supposed to play Sidney. Drew accidentally kept really calling 911 during filming the open scene. The mask was inspired by Edvard Munch's painting The Scream, he found the mask in a box while cleaning out the filming location, they looked at dozens of other Masks and they didn't like any. They than bought the rights for the mask.

This film was released in 1996. At that time, the slasher subgenre in horror was... well, almost extinct. The big franchises were either finished or almost finished. And along comes this film, conceived as a satire/homage and swan song/farewell to that specific genre. And it goes and resurrects it. The following years were filled with new slashers born in the shadow of Scream. By the time that momentum started to lose steam we were already in the 2000s and the old franchises came back thanks to remakes and nostalgia, and the genre is still going strong today, playing with the formula, trying new gimmicks, etc. And Scream endures. Part 7 is already being planned.

I have gone as Ghostface every year for Halloween since and no matter how many years pass people will always be just a little hesitant around you when you don the costume. I adored the music and the score, especially for Casey's scene. I wish it had just told a more serious story though like Halloween and not gone for the meta jokey style as the movie(s) progressed. This movie has the greatest opening in the history of horror movies, and one of the best ones period in any genre. Also Scream is elevated horror in the sense that it does something else well, like comedy. Scream is legitimately funny throughout the franchise. The best horror movies do something other than produce scares. They either make you laugh between the trauma or make real commentary about things like Get Out. Love that you did the best horror movies I've ever seen back to back. And don't listen to the doubters every Scream movie is fun. Scream 3 gets hate, but it is the one in the series that will make you laugh out loud with the comedic talent in that cast. Hope you watch them all.🙏

Scream is such a good series. The 3rd was the only one I felt went a little sideways, but it was still fun to watch. I've loved the three newer ones as well. They do a great job of making Ghost face more brutal and intimidating.

I wanted an honest reaction, so I didn't tell my daughter (11 then) how I felt about part 3. Her reaction halfway through: "Dad, this one kinda sucks, huh?" - We've skipped it ever since on Halloween marathons.

You should definitely continue with the series. The first is pretty unanimously considered the best, and the quality wavers a bit. But most Scream fans agree there isn't a bad movie in the bunch. Even the worst Scream is enjoyable, which can't be said for many other horror franchises

Neve Campbell in this movie was sooo pretty/gorgeous. A fun fact of the movie it´s that Courteney Cox (Gale Weathers) and David Arquette (agent Dewey), had a romance in the real life, like in the film (you can see the chemistry), and were married and had a daughter (Coco Riley Arquette).

The mask predates the movie originally being made by Loren Gitthens for Alterian as a halloween costume but a knock off was made of the mask by Funworlds who then licensed the rights for their knock off to be used in the movie so they’re not credited for their contribution.

I love this movie for its self-awareness and cleverness. I love they play don't fear the reaper as foreshadowing when Billy sneaks into Sydney's room at the beginning I love Jamie Kennedy is yelling Jamie behind you when Ghostface was behind him and as for reactors I love how many people are concerned about the popcorn burning lol

Once you know how they operate, you can figure out which killer is on the phone. One likes to play games and the other is more wild and direct with his actions. Plus, both of the killers are wearing black shoes in like the fountain shots while no one else is. Also, the dad is wearing exactly the same thing at the end of the movie as he had on earlier because he has been kidnapped for a bit. The move kid is saying Jamie, look behind you talking to the TV, but his actual name is Jamie Kennedy, so it has a hidden joke.

Also, Christopher Lee made a critique about getting stabbed when he played Sarumon. Jackson wanted something dramatic, then Lee said it's not like that. It's more like your breathe leaving you. Then then also mention how he was stabbed while he was enlisted. Lee said, "Have you any idea what kind of noise happens when somebody’s stabbed in the back? Because I do.”

Friend had a Halloween party in his basement when these movies were a phenomenon. Had a guy dressed as Ghostface to scare people as they came in and had to go down a long hallway to the basement door (red light, halloween sound effects playing). Hearing people scream was like the doorbell. 😂
