I think Randy means that since it was a planned out trilogy it's more like one film chopped into three parts, not three individual films. The story continues, it isn't over in the first film and then restarts in the next. Therefore it's not facing the same challenge like other sequels, where they have a really great stand alone film and then have to come up with a completely new story and reason for the film to exist. So I can see why he feels like it doesn't count.
@rsfilmdiscussionchannel41682 жыл бұрын
Not to mention, Godfather’s 1 and 2 might have been linked but 3 was made 15 years later so all three weren’t planned together as one story. The original Star Wars trilogy was made closer together and I think was always going to be a set of 3 films.

The tension during that scene was off the scale and people were losing their shit, it was brilliant!

It was one of the first R rated movies I ever saw in theaters and I remember feeling so cool because so many of my friends hadn't been allowed to see it. I still love 'Scream' a bit more, but there are some parts of 'Scream 2' that were better than the 1st. That scene in the police car gave me such anxiety at the time. I don't think I breathed once during that whole scene the first time. I also thought the reveal at the end was pretty well done. But that whole scene of Dewey, Gale, and Randy talking to the killer on campus and trying to ambush anyone who happened to be talking on the phone...so...well...done. I just love how that was setup. I think the logic behind that statement "EMPIRE STRIKES BACK doesn't count as a sequel while GODFATHER PART II does" comes from that, back in the '80's and '90's, George Lucas always championed the myth that he had planned his entire trilogy out from the beginning. Today we all know that isn't true as more production stuff is known. So the logic that character has is that ESB isn't a "true sequel" because he believes it had always been planned since before 1977.
@looney10232 жыл бұрын
Favorite Scream sequel easily! I especially love the chase through the sound studio and the score there. I also love how many characters this film juggles. There are scenes in the middle where different combinations of characters are grouped together for different scenes and encounter other characters unexpectedly (like Cotton confronting Sydney in the library) One minor thing I don't care for is that for Dewey, the film's score recycles some music from the film Broken Arrow, which is fine, but it clashes with Beltrami's score and sticks out in kind of a bad way. But yeah this movie slaps. I always think I don't like it that much, but then I rewatch it and I'm always surprised at how many little things it does that rock

I think behind that sequel debate is that Empire Strikes Back was conceived from the beginning as a second part of a larger story in which New Hope is just a first part. On the other hand, Godfather: Part II is a sequel that was conceived and shot only after the first one was successful. That has been my understanding. I don't know how steady it stands: maybe ESB wasn't pre-planned or maybe Godfather: Part II was.

I saw this in a theater when it came out and always loved it more than the first one. Also I understand the diference between part of a trilogy and sequel, and it has to do with the story. I think the problem is with the word trilogy wich means group of 3, and has nothing to do with the point he's making. Storywise, he refers to a sequel as a movie wich is part of the franchise but has it's independent story. You can watch Aliens without ever seeing Alien, but you can´t watch Empire without watching New Hope. Or Two Towers without seeing The Fellowship, or Back to The Future 2 without seeing the original, because they're the next chapter in the same plot. On the other hand, you can watch any entry on the Die Hard, Lethal Weapon or Indiana Jones franchises without ever watching the original. That's what Randy considers sequels, another independent story in the same franchise.

I think the sequel conversation was defining a sequel as a follow-up movie that wasn't initially planned, but came about solely because of the success of the first movie. And in reference to Empire not being a sequel, it's the idea that George Lucas had all three original Star Wars planned out, while the third Godfather wasn't planned until several years after Part 2. That part I believe is true, even if the movie's definition of a sequel is a bit off in my opinion. Or you can interpret it as Randy not being as knowledgeable as he thinks he is, as a representation of audiences not being as smart as they think are, which is a theory I've seen online. In the end, I just love this movie for Timothy Olyphant's scenery chewing. My favourite Scream killer in the entire series.

When I saw the new Scream movie in theaters, the main thing that pissed me off was it's nowhere near the quality of a Wes Craven movie. I'm also mad we'll never get a "new" one, and I think Scream as a film franchise said everything it needed to with the fourth installment because the fifth one just felt like a repeat of that whole "legacy sequel/reboot" and Scream NEVER repeated itself until now, that was always part of the appeal, even if Scream 3 mirrors Wes Craven's New Nightmare. I think what Scream 2 was trying to say is Godfather 3 wasn't "planned", the first the installments were but it was never meant to have the three act structure of a trilogy. It's up to each individual what they actually think of such a rule imposement as well as the films themselves, but that's why we dissect and discuss these things and how they made us feel. This was always a great film, but the reason why it pissed fans off is it killed off the fan favorite character in a stupid way early on (think Scream 5).

To the point you have a gripe about... Scream 2 defines a sequel as a 2nd movie that isn't planned to be part of a trilogy. If you'll recall, in scream 3, they say that trilogies have completely different rules, so since scream 2 wasn't yet planned to be a trilogy, it's not in the trilogy category when it came out. When scream 2 came out, it wasn't meant to be part of a trilogy. When Godfather 2 came out, it wasn't meant to be part of a trilogy. But when Empire came out, it WAS planned to be part of a trilogy, so doesn't fit the film's definition of a sequel.

I remember never seeing Scream 2 until later in life. When I was a kid, the original and Scream 3 were the only ones I owned and I watched them in my VCR TV over and over on repeat for my whole childhood. I don't think I saw Scream 2 until after I even saw Scream 4.

Not gonna lie. I actually like this movie a lot more than the other sequels - and it’s MILES better than Scream 3 😂. Definitely a worthy watch.
