Oddly enough, I was more annoyed by Scream 2 in the theater than any of the sequels. I somehow knew Scream 3 was going to be sillier than the others going into it. I never found any of the Scream films, including the first one, to be particularly scary but I do think they are a lot of fun. I come to the series as someone who really likes the meta and satirical aspects first and foremost; which is to say I had a blast watching this film. Although never really scared, I do find the chase scenes, stalking, and the face-off between the final girl(s) and the killer, etc. to be thrilling. I appreciated all of the Easter eggs, callbacks, and references and the movie is full of them. But most of all, I like that this movie invested some time and energy into actually getting us familiar with the Gen Z kids in Woodsboro before integrating the legacy trio into the story. In particular, Jenna Ortega and Jasmin Savoy Brown impressed me. David Arquette probably also gives his best performance ever here, giving Dewey a lot of emotional resonance. Overall, people need to not overthink this too much. No one really expects or needs this movie to be a cinematic masterpiece, it just needs to be fun, which it is.

I love the Scream franchise particularly for it self referencing concept. You’re right Mark - Wes Craven’s New Nightmare did it just as well, but was swept under the carpet at the time. Hopefully people will now ‘dig it out’ of the archives and rediscover it’s brilliance.

So, horror as purely as an aesthetic. This is a common problem with many modern horror movies, from all over the world. Maybe it's a lot of emulation without really understanding what made thir predecessors actually scary, or maybe it's a lack of horror movie making talent. But actual tension and fear in a horror movie is becoming exceedingly rare. Just having shocking violence and gore doesn't make it a good horror film, in my book. Maybe the Scream TV series of a few years ago was better in that regard.

I found it enjoyable enough, a decent (and welcome) addition to the franchise. The emotional core with regards to the original cast members surprised me (I may have got something in my eye at one point). What let it down, for me, were some of the younger charisma-free cast members. Jack Quaid was great but the lead girl was so bland and the character development for others was sorely lacking. If you don't care about them then the stakes are exponentially lower. Oh, and so far no one's mentioned the deeply odd CGI Billy? Thoughts?
@CreepingBrutus2 жыл бұрын

The originals were my first horror films when I was far too young (in my primary school!) So they have a special place in my black heart. I thought this was a great film for the fans. A modern update on the meta self-referential gags Scream is known for, with plenty of gore and jumps. I loved the game of cat and mouse it played, building suspense and giving release. It’s not an amazing film, but it’s a great addition to the Scream franchise and exactly what you want from a slasher film, with some bonus humour.

I think the script and performances are stronger than what we saw in Scream 4, and it doesn’t have that feeling of it being obviously rewritten multiple times (no Ehren Krueger this time). I do think it treads on a lot of the same ground covered by the remake/reboot commentary of #4, but I think this one stumbles when you get into the motivations (I was astonished that this film was defending a certain other franchise entry…). The idea of recapturing the magic of the first Scream has been a theme of every single sequel, and Scary Movie even is part of that legacy (which incidentally was released a few months after Scream 3).

Kermode and I always have the same opinion on horror. This is why I adore him so much. I didn't love this new Scream. It felt like it was more interested in being referred to as a "new scream" than it was in actually trying to make a sequel in a similar vein to the series. It's incredibly tepid and lacks the wit the others had and it doesnt have a single moment where youre actually scared. That wouldn't be as big of a deal if the whole premise of the movie didn't revolve around the idea of being an elevated requel. I also remember how scared I was when I saw the original opening night. Somewhere the franchise forgot about trying to scare the audience and my hope was that this new film would reinject some fear into it. Instead, it's just a visceral slasher with nothing interesting to say. Such a bummer 😕.

I love Wes Craven (RIP) and adore the Scream franchise. Even its faults I love - yes that includes Courtney’s bangs in Scream 3. I was disappointed with this film. Deputy Dewey should be front and center and adding humor; the film uses his character in a lifeless way and overall lacks the wit of the franchise. Pluses: Ghostface’s voice is in top form, and the filmmakers clearly respect Wes Craven a great deal. And the ending is well paced. But the new characters aren’t memorable, for the most part, the legacy characters are jammed in. The film misses Wes’ touch and also, Williamson’s. He should have been the writer on this one - even the director as well. Losing both of those creative forces was too much to overcome. Not bad , for me, but will not be a part of my yearly ScreamAThon either.

That's what gives it its longevity. This new instalment... well... I felt for Arquette, Cox and Campbell. The only scenes with any pathos or interest were involving them. Most actors looked incredibly bored. And is there a point where a text becomes so meta that the audience becomes redundant and should just walk out? Throwing in references to reddit and 4chan and "elevated horror" will only take you so far. *Spoilers* The first killer is exceptionally easy to predict and the motivation of the second doesn't feel connected to the character. Horror cannot live in politically correct culture. Without any real threat of transgression, even going for shock value resolves to childish "look at my chewed up food" attention grabbing. *For me, at the end of the original the final shot of the camera panning from the house to the hills is incredibly affecting, with the brief score underneath and then moving into the credits with 'Whisper To A Scream' by Soho as the credits roll. That aside, every film in the franchise bar the original sequel are totally unnecessary. It's ironic really, as the original satirised the slasher genre yet the Scream franchise is almost worthless now due to countless unnecessary sequels (as happened with Friday the 13th, Halloween and A Nightmare On Elm Street.)*

@@AC-op4pe I watched the previous 4 again in recent weeks and enjoyed the fourth one more than I remembered doing but this is such a drop in quality. The returning characters are all it has going for it and they didn’t appear until too far into the film. As Mark says it wasn’t scary either. And the new characters didn’t really work other than maybe the nephew and niece of Randy but they weren’t in it much. The original Scream and Scream 2 are the classics imho. 4 is good. 3 isn’t. This is worse.

The twins didn’t bring anything other than “exposition”….. in the original at least Randy was shown to be a geek who worked in a video store and took film school classes…. This chick just knows stuff….

@@sweetf2a I like 1,2 and 4 but 3 and 5 are garbage they just look like films that were rushed or made just for the sake of making them. They should look to the true fans for ideas on what they want to see and what routes to go down in these films instead of churning out crap

@@AC-op4pe I think they should just let it lie after this. I think it was done as a tribute to Wes Craven. I doubt any of the remaining original actors will want to do another one and I just don’t think there’s enough charisma to the new characters. It felt like a straight to video film.

"and yet so wrong [right-wing politics]" unnecessary and incorrect.
