So post making this video I discovered that Tommy Donbavand is battling cancer. (I'm kind of glad I made a predominantly positive review of his books or I would have felt like a right dickhead). Wishing him all the best and the strength he needs to kick its arse.

Thanks for the review. A couple of points you may find interesting... * Yes, you did pronounce my surname correctly. Not many people do. * The first four Scream Street books were published in the UK in October 2008, not 2010. I thankfully had a little longer than a year to write all 13 adventures. * The TV company's decision to tell different stories to those in the books came about because they didn't want to launch a brand new show about a protagonist trying to leave and put an end to the fun. Plus, this way - readers get to see the characters in new stories. * No overarching story allows broadcasters around the world to show the episodes out of order, should they so wish. * SPOILER: At the end of the 13th book, Luke and his parents remain in Scream Street - so the TV stories could take place between the books, or after the final installment. * I am indeed fighting cancer; I was diagnosed with stage four throat cancer in 2016, and had a tumour and section of my left lung removed six weeks ago. I'm currently waiting to find out where the little bugger will attack next.

Eh, I'm in my 20's and will still read kid's and YA fiction sometimes. Often times the biggest differences are the lack of sex and gore, younger characters, and a simpler vocabulary. The stories themseves can be fun, creative, and full of depth. I'd encourage you to read books that sound interesting to you even if you're not in the target audience. Plus it's good that kids have books with actual creative concepts and not just cliches.

Sometimes a quick read is fun. I admit I read middle-grade books (for about ages 8-12) when I want something I can read while waiting for my daughter to get out of ballet or something. Adult books are almost always so serious and often heavy, and the real world gives us enough of that. Ignore the age of a book's target audience and just read them if you find them fun.
@Nionivek6 жыл бұрын
@Laura B, frankly the reason I gravitate towards younger works is just because they often aren't shrouded in a constant dour attitude and don't make good characters "Complex" by making them mostly evil. I kind of wish adult media stepped up a bit in that respect but I understand we are just recovering from our "EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BE DARK!" phase.

I feel the need to be "that person" and mention that in TV Trope speak, a bottle episode isn't really an episode that doesn't connect to an over arching plot but is typically an episode that uses as few sets and extra characters as possible in order to save production costs. It's standardly the main cast stuck in a room and is where the entire episode takes place (see my favorite example "Cooperative Calligraphy" from Community). I could be wrong though since phrases can have multiple meanings. I've just never heard bottle episode used that way before.

About the "ten books in one year" thing. The writer probably didn't write all those books during the year of their release. Publishers are often scared of readers forgetting about a series before it's over, especially when it targets a younger audience. As a result, it's not unusual for them to ask for several books to be written before the first one is set to be released (generally, they are released two or three at a time and we try not to go over 6 months between releases... children grow fast and trends die even faster). I'm currently working on a series for kids and I was asked for four books set to be released simultaneously, followed by two books which will be released five months later (followed by two books five months after that if it doesn't bomb... so that will be 8 books released in less than a year but with almost two years of writing before the first book hits the shelves).

I've never heard of this before but I actually really like this animation style, I would love some adult animation to look like this because there only seems to be Robot Chicken in that region.
@jonsnor43136 жыл бұрын
There is a old series celebrety death match, from former mtv which robot chicken copied just as a guess.. The style can be really good to to have dark absurd humor without being too graphic. It would be the perfect to do a south park style series, or just s children series for adults. Wallace and grommit exist through that is are childrens movies. I dont know why the style isnt more popular. Its good for series where you do a style that the audience doesnt expect. The shows today have likely less experimentation.

To be honest, i think the show was very obscure and became worse with time. And more enjoyable for children an teenager a guess due just being very odd. Mtv had suprising good series like daria, who is a sarcastic loner teenager and people like beevis and butthead and ren and sti... sorry forgot name. And i guess nowadays cartoon series are less experimental. Its even a wonder that south park exists. And robot chicken. I think wallace and gromace movies are familie movies. Adult may enjoy it too. And i am sure there exist some movies faded in obscurity in that stlye for adults.

the production quality doesn't look cheap to me. it's really rare to see a stop motion television series use this sort of complex character rigging/lighting/set pieces and the animation itself is employing a lot of full body shots/constant gestures you wouldn't see with something more rushed.

@onijester566 жыл бұрын
A younger audience is...I grew up with R.L. Stine and Bruce Coville and Stephen King as my go-to horror novelists. I stayed up on school-nights watching "The Twilight Zone" and "The Outer Limits", while also watching "Goosebumps" and "Are You Afraid of the Dark" during the daytime. Outside of that, I also enjoyed "The Hardy Boys" and "The Boxcar Children" books, obviously Power Rangers, and a shit-ton of other content that you would expect from a "90's-kid". In every instance, with these and other works, the lack of a continuous story was never a hindrance when the stories told within the works were good or presented competently. However, that said, having the same characters reappear or specific plot elements impact a later work's series of events was always something I enjoyed because it made things feel more important. It brought the work to life. So, with that in mind, I can understand the more-episodic status of the show as it makes screenwriting more cost-effective and quicker. I can't say I ever saw the show, of course. But since the kid that I was didn't oppose either method I'm sure that the kids who watched this likewise didn't oppose either method.

A bottle episode is an episode of a TV show designed to use as little money as possible (usually by keeping the cast limited, as well as keeping it in one or two locations, etc) - an example would be Heaven Sent from Doctor Who. I think you meant something more along the lines of "episodic".

I read the books again as a teenager and actually really enjoyed them and I didn’t know there was a series until recently and I’m not going to lie I was disappointed in the series because I liked the darker tone of the books. Also spoiler for anyone who may want to read it... But I was annoyed that Luke’s mum also being a werewolf wasn’t brought into it. Edit: so it's been 4 years and I wanted to come back here as my opinions habe changed quite a lot, I've really grown to love the TV series as it's own thing, series 2 did some really cool stuff. I even saw the Alton Towers shows these last 2 scarefests and cosplayed Luella from the TV show. The books will always be my favourite but it's funny how time has really changed my opinions of this world. 🥰

Ha!! I was 100% sure by her design that she’s a werewolf! Omg I’m totally gonna read the books.

Hey The Dom have you ever read animorphs?

cat foy I used to obsess over the books when I was younger (was massively disappointed in the tv show). Rereading them as an adult, I recognize that the stories were rather repetitive, however I'm surprised to how violent and grim those books were.

MsCassidy23 I ended up dropping it like halfway through but checked out the last one sometime after it ended and I was so surprised. I'm not unopposed to either "dark" endings nor open ended final books but it felt very off for Animorphs. I have such fond memories of the series (the first fanfic I wrote was for Animorphs 😂) so seeing how it turned out just made me sad. I think they even killed my favorite character. 😒

Star Hunter I dropped off too because I found other things, but have a lot of respect for what the author did. She was really, even in a kids series, on warfare and it's outcomes. It took some balls to do that, when everyone expects cheerful, happy endings. The context of many of the stories are the moral dilemmas of winning a one-sided war, and having savagely adults situations thrust upon these preteens. Realistically, there wasn't going to be a happy ending for any of them, given the events they had to survive. Quoting Marco in one of the books, "Win or lose this war, I'll have nightmares for the rest of my life." How many children's series has the balls to go there nowadays?

Uuuuggh, I love Lost in Adaptation but stop motion actually makes me a kinda queasy so watching those bits was not possible! Thankfully everything I'm listening to a review of it and can close my eyes during those parts, but again, ugh! 😂 Also, I love the word shenanigans.

I feel like I'd definitely watch the show if I read the books, but would consider it a different entity all together that just happens to share the same names. In my little mind, that happened with people all the time, so why not media, especially ones in different formats? Reading Now, though, I see this like a macabre wayside that holds up much less well in exchange for having a TV show that wasn't garbage.

I don't know why but but this episode felt as though you were pulling your punches and were not not going as in-depth as you normally go, it was probably because of the runtime but it still felt a bit underdeveloped which is unusual as your work is always so well done. It could just be me though, I thought that I would voice my opinion in this case 😂😂😂

Feeling too old is always strange. I felt too old for Pokémon... AT 12. I played Pokémon Red in secret so no one would see my GROWN UP 12 YEAR OLD SELF doing that. 10 years later everyone in university was openly playing Pokémon without a care.

To be fair going on quests to find magical items, has been around since ancient Greece and probably before that to. For example Jason and the argonauts on the quest to find the golden fleece and so on.

This, for some reason, reminded me of Trollhunters. That is based off of a book. If you ever have the chance, I would like to see an episode on that show.

You should do Miss Peregrine’s home for peculiar children. The adaptation is... interesting? They changed Emma and Olive’s powers and made Olive like 10 years older.

I hope you'll get around to the Babysitters Club. TRIPLE the fun AND unknown celelbrities to compare from then and now! BSC started off as books, then had a TV show and a movie. As a toddler, Kirsten Dunst was a model for the cover of the second book, Claudia and the Phantom Phone Calls. The little blonde toddler is her. (I didn't even know that the illustrations were based on anyone, but they did have people model for photos for them!) Zach Braff, when he wasn't known, was in the TV show at some point. An unknown Rachael Leigh Cook was Mary Anne in the movie. If you need any help with the books, which there are over 100 of but were only a couple dozen when the show and movies came out, I guarantee you that just about anyone here who was a girl aged 7-13 in the last 80's will be able to tell you everything, down to the names of all of jr. member Mallory Pike's seven sibling in age order and who was roomed with whom.
