I rescued one of these Eastern Screech Owls and no rapture rehabilitator would take it, so I raised him until he was grown. For being a wild animal he sure was sweet. He loved being petted. I let him go after I taught him hunting and I heard him about a week and a half after I let him go. I sure miss him.

FYI, any one that is available for sale that isn't endangered (such as Ural Owls). However, some breeds are easier to handle. If they don't get the human imprint in the first 6 weeks of life, it's very hard to train them. They are birds of prey so you must be prepared to get it different meats such as mice, rats, squirrels, rabbits, etc. Remember, some owls eat other birds such as Eagle Owls. Snakes can also be on the menu. Some people freeze the prey, then must thaw and prepare it for the owl. It must eat the whole animal so it's natural process of expelling pellets of the prey's skeletal systems, fur, and other undigested parts occurs. You cannot ever leave them unless you can find a QUALIFIED raptor handler. They can live up to 20 years. They also must have room to fly to maintain health and need to maintain a fly weight. They're cute but FAR FROM EASY to keep. Best advice~find a bird sanctuary in your area and volunteer your time. Learn everything you can before you even CONSIDER taking one on as a companion. Owls aren't like dogs and many have a strong independent streak. Good luck!

theladychamLV I agree with you 100%, coz I have javan scops owl, of course it's pretty much easy to handle than the others species like barn owl, or eagle owl BUT still it isn't easy when we talk about maintain, they are nocturnal, so we have to let them hunt their prey, of course we train them too but not easy like the other kind of birds, they are Bird of prey.

Birds are a lot smarter than people give them credit for. This owl realized he was being " blown dry" and presented the areas still wet. He obviously trusts his owner very much too. No fear whatsoever. Adorable but should a bird of prey be kept as a pet if it's healthy enough to care for itself in the wild?

I just rewatched this. He is slapping his but into the water! This little owl is washing his but!! I know human beings full grown ones that could use a few lessons from him. The but slapping is just too much. Then the blowdrying takes it over the top. He LOVES BEIMG DRIED HE LOOKS LIKE HE'S IN HEAVEN and the trust he has for you is incredible to see.
