The reason the targaryens practice incest is because of the blood rituals/ sacrificies their ancestors created to bond with dragon. It implied that the blood of the dragon is literally dragon blood and breeding out of there bloodline alot might dilute it so they can't bond with dragons. It's shown in the tapestry in the intro. There's also appears to be some sort of psychic link with the dragons which would make them more passionate n instincts like there dragons.

Another theory is that the Targaryens have an empathic link to the dragons in both GOT and HOTD. The Targaryens use this empathic link to control and command the dragons, and the dragons feel and emulate the emotions of their riders such as when in distress. However, this empathic link to a wild creature flows two ways in that the animal wildness of the dragon influences the minds of the riders over time. The more the Targaryens interact with the dragons the more wild, violent, and ultimately insane they become. This may indeed be seen as a metaphor for the corrupting effect (i.e. insanity) of power (i.e, the dragons), that is the more the Tragaryen rider use the dragon or its power, the more corruption or insanity falls upon the rider.

Putting aside the fact that Leana was only twelve when she was offered to Viserys, Rhynaera would not have had the support of the Valeryons against Leana's son with Viserys. Corlys is ambitious, and Rhaenys would finally see her offspring on the throne after being denied herself. Whoever married Viserys would want their child-not Rhynaera- on the throne. Viserys cannot win. He could have later followed advice and married Rhynaera to Aegon, which while nasty to us- would have avoided the Dance of Dragons.

There are these theories, supported by the books (I haven't read the books - but I heard them from reliable KZbinrs, so they seem very believable to me), that the Valyrians were created by crossing humans with dragons (blood magic? genetic experiements?). Therefore, the people of Valyria (including the Tragaryens) have dragon blood. This allows them to bond with dragons. And this is the reason they don't want to dilute their blood, otherwise they may lose the dragon bond. And that's the reason for their incest.

the Valyrians were farmers when the dragons appeared near the Fourteen Fires. The theory is that dragons were merged between firewyrms (think Dune but with fire breathing worms) and wyverns , two legged dragon like creatures from Sothoryos using blood magic. The blood was of course human blood so they were magically and emotionally tied to their dragons. The Targaryens were of the dragonriding class while others like the Velaryons and Celtigars were not, precisely because the latter two did not take part in blood magic rituals and preferred to live far away in Westeros. The Targaryens themselves did not take the rituals of blood magic with them to Westeros, so descent was the only way to become a dragon rider. Rheanyra's search for dragonseeds leads her to a varied group of people from pure Valyrian looking people like the Hull brothers to completely foreign looking ones like Nettles, so the possibility of dragonriding doesn't necessarily diminish after several generations. The incest actually died down after Daeron II married Myriah Martell, with the next three kings marrying outside the family (Meakar and Aegon V) or to a cousin (Aerys I )and no incest in their generation. Aegon was angry that his second son Jaeherys wanted to be with his sister Shaera. To make things worse, Jaeherys II believed a woods witch's prophecy that the Prince That Was Promised would be from their line, so he forced his children to marry each other, leading to the Mad King and his 3 strange children.

Say he was naturally (genetically) pre-dispositioned to be cruel but then you add in incest and it’s like cruelty squared. People are different, the Targaryen’s are hot heads (yes some are evil), Joffrey seems like a narcissistic psychopath, not surprising given his mother is Cersei. Upbringing also plays a role in what traits are amplified.

I think it stems from them not listening to the true dreams like Helena, the curse of using blood magic, and them believing in a false prophecy (then thinking they are the Prince that was Promise). In real history most of the royal families married their cousins…which created birth defects, tyrannical behavior, and succession wars. Martin was heavily influenced by the War of The Roses, Emperess Matilda vs. King Stephen, Greek/Roman/Egyptian history…and Queen Victoria’s Grandchildren (who all married into the Royal families of Europe…and who all fought against each other in WW1).

Deamon didn’t marry Mysaria. He told everyone she was with child and that he was going to marry her. But none of it was true, he was trying to push Viserys buttons. I do think the incest has caused the extremes in Targaryen personality traits such as extremely violent n cruel or extremely weak. But that’s not the issue here. Alicent caused this war and all the problems within this family. But back to the incest, it’s necessary for the Targaryen’s to practice incest. If their blood gets to deluded they won’t be dragon riders anymore. The intro tapestry shows how the dragon bond was forged. A Targaryen is sacrificed and their soul goes into the dragon, then a Targaryen can bond with and become the dragons rider. That’s the 3 heads of the dragon, the one sacrificed, the rider, and the dragon itself. It’s blood magic and this is why they are blood of the dragon, there ancestor, (or their blood) is literaly part of the dragon. So in order to ensure more generations of dragon riders (since the valerian mages that knew the spells to do this magic are no more) they must practice incest. Without the dragons they are just like anyone else, and loose their power. So they have to practice incest, even if it’s making them crazy.

You can’t talk about incest without talking about Craster. In the end I think we will understand his sorrowful life. Here is what I think happened. Craster’s mother made a deal with the Night King to handover sons… and NO, not for sacrifice to be his sons. Craster’s first daughter was from him when he was just a child and his mother then he bore children with his daughters, grand daughters, great granddaughter etc. Yes, crazy can come out in this born of incest but there is also MAGIC. Melisandre was wrong. She mistook, misheard, misread and or misunderstood the phrase “There is magic in kinG’s blood” the real phrase I believe is “There is magic in kiN’s blood” meaning incest, but only in “magical” families. This wordplay has been hinted at several times with a similar pairing “kinG slaying” and kiN slaying”. Since Targaryen have always been kings it was difficult to make a difference. She tried with Stannis but it was weak and tricks she could conjure regardless. The Night King was looking to revive ancient Stark magic by compounding the kin’s blood each generation. There are only two families that are bonded to magical creatures, the Targaryens and dragons and the Starks with dire wolves. At some point the North Forgot and stopped kin’s blood mating which was probably around the time they also lost their dire wolves. However the traits that we see in the Targaryens we can still see in the Starks. Brandon Stark was considered a bit of a madman, but then there was Ned Stark too shy to ask girls to dance. Same traits with Rob Stark “passionate” and war like and “””PRE-FALL””” Bran who was regularly beaten at archery by his sister Arya. I came to the series very late and decades after the first book and by then certain theories had been etched in blood… like R+L=J. I don’t see it. I do not see Jon having one iota of Targaryen blood in him. In fact, I think GRRM told us explicitly that Jon is NOT a Targaryen. In the maestro’s diary that supposedly tells of the marriage between R+L, it is written on the bottom of the page (meaning it could have been added at a later date) it was only one sentence and it was in a diary that the maester kept a re cord of his bowel movements… GRRM is trolling and saying that that book was full of isht. My theory is B+L=J Benjen is Jon’s father. This is why Ned was lenient with Cersei when he figured out that her brother was the father to her children. What did Aaryn say “The seed is strong”… yes it is.Jaime and Cersei getting it on in the Old Keep was literally a reenactment of Benjen and Leanna’s trists. It bothered Catelyn to no end that Jon looked more like a Stark than her own children…. That is because he was 100% Stark just like Daenerys was 100% Targaryen both born from a pairing with brother and sister. The first person in the book and in the show Jon talks about fatherhood is with Benjen. It would also make sense why Ned sent Benjen to the Wall even though he had no brothers as banner men and his children were still babies. In the show, when Ned says he will tell Jon about his mother the camera pivots to Benjen. Not all kin’s blood are weak or crazy some are balanced like the 1st Aegon, Rhaenerys Valarion etc. What if the real song of Ice and Fire was a Prince or Princess that was promised to blend these two families to forever restore balance to the universe. If you ignore season 8 (good riddance) Jon and Danaerys are the best of Ice and FIre… wouldn’t their pairing bring balance to the universe? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I am going to say something really Blasphemous… . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , . . . . I think Ned killed Lyanna when he found out about the baby. (Tower of Joy never happened, it was implanted in Ned’s “fever dream”. I think he killed her and wanted to kill Jon just like he wanted to kill all the dire wolf pups at the beginning. He killed her because if he didn’t he knew that the Stag (Robert) would. I think that the Night King who can skin change into the dead , skin changed into Lyanna and resurrected her for a moment and made Ned promise not to kill the child. I think this scared the isht out of Ned and this is why he broke thousands of years of tradition and buried Lyanna in the Winterfell Crypts to keep her spirit contained. There I said it. . .

The Tower of Joy did happen though. We didn't see it through Ned's "fever dream". We saw it with Bran viewing the past. Also GRRM himself confirmed that Jon is Targaryen. He notoriously wouldn't let anyone adapt the books unless they understood them well enough to figure it out themselves. That was the main criteria for getting the show and D&D figured it out and were then allowed to make it. Lastly Melisandre's prophecy all came from a different language so the whole kin/king thing doesn't work. If I remember correctly she thought that Stannis was the Prince Who Was Promised, but obviously he wasn't, and again it was later revealed that in whatever language that was used, "prince" and "princess" were the same word making the prophecy actually translate to "The Prince/Princess That Was Promised".

He asked the showrunners who they thought were Jon’s parent but he never said that they were right. Regarding Prince/Princess that is what I said … it doesn’t matter because BOTH are needed. My theory is the this world is out of balance and it has been for a long time. I think they have to create a yin/yang ice/fire alliance to create balance so yeah it doesn’t matter they need BOTH a prince and princess. The Azor Ahai prophecy is the BIGGEST LIE. It is pure manipulation over centuries to get a certain outcome that no one will deny or obstruct… think the Bene Gesserit lying for thousands of years to ingrain the people and culture the outcome they wanted. I think that the basis of this series which is soooo relevant today is how propaganda shapes histories and futures.

What's interesting with Joffrey is he should've been mentally underdeveloped. That's more common from sibling inbreeding. Instead, he was just the psycho serial killer, which can just happen. Imbreeding is more about physical abnormalities than psychopathology. The Hapsburg chin. The pharoahs of Egypt had genetic diseases. I think the blood magic bonding with dragons is what creates the extreme behaviors in Targs. It may also be what mitigates the physiological problems they should be suffering from due to inbreeding.

All Valyrian's are cursed to die off, it's just that the Targaryans managed to last the longest via deception. Jon is the last remaining one and he can never hold a name or have a child (though he was probably going to try have another one in the show) and he will die with his brothers of the watch and his family in the Starks honouring his end and Westeros will move onto a golden age. And then we will get Game of Steam!!!

I don't agree that the majority of Targs are "extreme" not in this world. Take a look outside the castle and the small folk and you will see extreme- violence, cruelty, torture, that's the world they live in. Yes, there are extreme examples where madness has clearly been caused by incest but it's not some complete familial affliction. The Targs are cursed but it's a magical one. The moment they used blood magic to control the dragons, they were cursed. Viserys knew this. You can see it in both GoT and particularly HotD, were so much disaster could have been avoided but then a small act of fate shifts the gears towards war a tragedy. I think the Valarians were punished for their blood magic and their hubris with the volcanic eruption and the doom. But the Targs were spared (thanks to Daneys the Dreamer) because the Lord of Light knew that Winter was coming and the White Walkers could only be stopped with dragons. Once the long night had been averted, Dany dies and the last connection between man and dragons was severed.
