@DASBookbinding. Thank you for your work on this video. Back in the last century - while attending technical college, I made a photo album in the exact same style as yours here. However, the course lecturer showed us how to make the guards for the pages in a different way. We had to trim the paper for the pages so that the width of the guard was added to the overall page size (spine to foredge). Then we used a treadle - operated pin perforator to perforate the pages the chosen width of the guard, followed by a treadle creaser for the hinge position - about the same size as the guard, in from the perforation. By folding the paper on the line of perforation, you created the guard for each page - still attached to the pages! Suppose you could call them “integrated guards”.The lecturer then got us to glue/pad the pages together with PVA glue to create a “book block”. I suppose with students ongoing work stored between weekly sessions, this made sure that all the components of each of their photo albums stayed together. When we made the covers for the album and the cover for the spine, the lecturer made us remove the shine/sheen from the supplied Rexene book cloth with alcohol(?). In that way we could stick the boards to the spine cover for security. But then it was not possible to add extra pages/leaves to the album. Regarding the naming of your screw posts/Chicago screws - our lecturer called them “Inter - screws”. I’ve used something similar to fix IKEA wardrobe carcasses together. A bit off topic, but maybe of interest to you. I used to work with a senior print finishing machine operator who did some hand bookbinding for HM Government in London. He told me that as an apprentice, he had worked on the binding of ships’ log book covers for His Majesty’s Royal Navy ( that was for King George VI in WW2!). Apparently, these log books had a “thong binding” - two/three thin leather straps anchored in the back board, with a special key - wound tensioning system for easy flat opening/adding pages etc. through to the front board. However, when the bookbinders made the front and back boards, my colleague said that they fixed in slim sheets of lead, padded under some wadding before being bound in leather. So if the (war)ship was sunk, the log should never float to the surface of the sea and possibly fall into enemy hands! Many thanks for your work. Stay safe and well.

Thank you so much, today’s video gave me the inspiration to bind/screw an album tomorrow 🙏 you are the best inspiration and your sense of humor is the best

This the exact binding style I was planning on doing for my next project (using strings). So this video came at exactly the right time! Thank you!

This was really interesting. I found the image of how they used to use rope or string to tie it instead of the posts super cool! I have a sister that is an artist so when i made her an art book I did this type of folded page for it so there would be room if she glued sand, glitter, or used thicker acrylic medium on the pages. The binding though was just the simple double needle coptic binding (i like how the thread looks on the spine and how they lay open flat for doing art or writing). It did end up working well for her though, and I glad I made it, even with my real lack of experience in the craft.

Good to see new posts. I’m trying to get into the craft, so I hope I’ll see you around at QBG events :) Keep up the great videos

Might be worthwhile to visit antique shops and see if you can pick up old inexpensive photo albums -- you might find that's a cost-effective way to pick up some album hardware. Your stuff always looks so crisp and classy -- beautiful work once again.

In the US public library where I work, we still keep copies of city ordinances printed in screw-post binding notebooks. They can be updated easily, but unlike a ring binder, they are hard and slow for any given idiot to disassemble and remove sections.

Youre not wrong about sewn albums being tricky. I've made two sewn albums, one following Kathy Abbott's instructions and another following Zeier's- both were difficult, though not insurmountable. Theyre both done as cased bindings and doing the actual casing in was difficult because as you say you cant press them. Ive wondered if a sewn boards structure could be adapted to an album. It doesnt require much if any pressing and as it is built up in boards (sort of) you dont have the problem of casing in a wedge shaped book. Attaching the spine piece might be trickt though. Maybe I'll try one day.

Please make a few more videos on decorating your covers. For example, this one says "Photo Album". How did you do that? What ways can it be done? I don't have any gold foil tool yet, and want to find ways to start decorating my covers.

Unfortunately I use tools and machines most people don’t have access to. So it doesn’t seem that useful. Sorry.

Thank you for this! Das, I've seen in a few of your previous videos a type of paper/material you use to put between pages to stop moisture being absorbed while your projects are in the press. What is it called please?

So where might one get these “Bookbinding Award Certificates”? With all the mistakes I make, I believe I deserve one!

I know this is a very dumb question, but how do you put photos into this? Double-sided tape? Glue? I’m confused as to how this holds photos.

Photo corners. But look for quality ones labelled something like “archival” such as by Lineco.
