This is an excellent mechanical installation, but this Don Johnson screwdriver already has built in impedance matching coil and 4:1 balun is not needed, but choke balun instead. To get 50 Ohm impedance, the coil has to be tuned by making a jumper between ground and the coil. With the SWR analyzer determine how many turns should be shortened to get 50 Ohm. With the proper installation you will not need a tuner to operate the radio. Vertical antenna has about 30 Ohm impedance and with 4:1 balun will be much lower and you will not be able to user your radio without a tuner.
@edwhitney18622 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ned! Since the Balun makes a nice connection for the coax I’ll short the balun coil and give it try that way. -Ed

Nifty idea. I do wonder what the purpose is of the 4:1 Balun. From having run a Tarheel Screwdriver antenna for years myself there is a need for Feed Point Impedance Matching on 40 and 80 meters. I'm guess that is somehow the reason for the Balun.
@edwhitney18622 жыл бұрын
Hi Dennis. It seems to match somewhat easier and provides a clean feedpoint. It certainly would probably work without it. -Ed W8EDW
