The old days are gone. I`m 67, when I was 13 in 1970 I started repairing mowers when my Dads stopped running. Parts were readily available. He gave me the mower and bought a new one. I fixed it and surprised him. I mowed lawns for 4 summers for pocket change. Neighbors called when theirs would not start. Had a nice cash business for awhile mowing lawns and repairing equipment. Kept my own stuff running for decades.

Yup, at 1 time u could go to the town dump and grab mowers for parts. Carbs, magneto coils breaker points etc. NO more! What a shame. Can't buy parts at times as they are on back order. They don't care if u need the item fixed today . They don't give a damn at all.

My next door neighbor gave me his push mower in 1969, I had to put an exhaust valve in it because he wouldn't buy a muffler and it ate up the valve stem. He bought a new one for $28 at a local store. I didn't have a 7/16 socket, so to get the oil pan off to put some different rings in it, I ground down an open end wrench so I could get that one bolt out.

I'm an hvac tech and I can tell you that what taryl is saying, is 100% true. This is standard industry practice for EVERYTHING with electronics, motors and engines. They are designed to last a limited time, then break. When this stuff breaks and you cannot get a $5 part that is necessarily for operation, you buy new equipment. They make MUCH more $$ that way.

A couple years ago, my mother in law bought a battery powered ride on tractor for my son. A couple months later, the pedal switch that makes it go stopped working. As luck would have it, my mother in law bought a warranty on it. She called them, and they did not have any replacement switch. They shipped a BRAND NEW tractor to my house all for free. They didnt want the old one back. I managed to fix the old one and had 2 tractors for the price of one. A very rare win for myself!

A week ago, I got a troy-bilt horse tiller running for a friend. It sat almost 40 years in his garage, never had ethanol gas in it. 8hp Kohler engine, electric start, spun the engine a couple of minutes to get oil flung around. I pulled the plug out of the bottom of the carb, looked like new. put some gas in it at it started like it had never took a 40 year nap.

I remember, back when I still had ma teef, my dad's '74 Pontiac Grand Safari wagon had a problem with the alternator. I was able to disassemble it, purchase a replacement rectum-fryer / voltage regulator from the local auto parts store, install it, put the alternator back together and install it on the car. We were back in bidness for less than $10. There was a local shop that rebuilt starters, alternators, and batteries, too. TVs were repairable...tubes and circuit boards were replaceable. It wasn't such a throw-away world back then.

I remember when you bought a tv the schematics came with it, when you took of the back there was a paper schematic inside so you could measure and repair broken parts, my uncle bought one of the first CD-players, it came with a service CD that when played put out a specific signal so you could tune the laser inside with an oscilloscope! I still have the CD-player and it works fine, I cleaned it once when it didn't work like it's supposed to, now it works just fine.

If there's no recourse on repair, even though repair may be the fix, the use of new parts gets a recourse established in the paperwork. Parts replacers are a creation of being customer driven, and bean counters agree. If you helped make the situation, maybe you didn't notice, but you're the reason grandpa handed his tools down, or sold them off. They may even have been stolen. Now people try to guess what they're for.

Another stupid thing happened to me. I live less than 3 miles from Oscar Wilson’s big parts distro house in Missouri. They used to have a walk up window for local guys to come buy, order or pickup parts. One day I go there, and they closed the walk up permanently and in order to get parts they were saying you had to open an account to order, and have the parts sent out through mail. I stopped going there, I don’t want to pay all this postage for every time I need a part, that I can pickup in person while out running around taking care of business.

I live 15 minutes from Jacks Small Engine. They have a store with a parts counter. They have some parts at the store but if you need a part that is in there warehouse a mile or two down the road you have to wait till the next day or order it online and pay the shipping. You can’t pay at the counter and drive to there warehouse to pick it up. No “will call” at the warehouse. They said they don’t have the staff to have a person at warehouse for customers. That’s what minimum wage laws do to the consumer. Here in MD is $15.50 and rising.

Had the fridge guy out about 5yrs ago because it was under warranty and quit working. Yes of course it was a Samsung with all the bells and whistles that's why it failed. Dude tried a circuit board ,that didn't work so he had a heck of a time condemning it with the factory. Ended up being a leaking defroster loop around the fridge. So after 4-5mo they sent a new fridge. They had a heck of a time finding one because they were beginning to end production on that model of course. So I have the new one for about 3yrs now ,and I'm still afraid to take most of the shipping plastic off. Haha ,I know when I do it'll fail again.

Yep ive got a late 90s seats snowblower with a tecumseh engine. I've been using it for 6-7yrs now with a blown governor, and it's tricky to manipulate the throttle for the load. I got it for some work trade , and I figured let's see what's finally going on. I figured worst case, just go get a predator engine and slap it on. Big surprise when I took the belt cover off and saw a PTO on the cam. Got a little nervous when I started looking up parts ,as a standard piston is NLA. Found all the governor parts though and the gaskets and whatnot , so hopefully this week sometime it'll be running again. Haven't had much snow here in the last few years so I'd wager I haven't put 5 hours on it in like 3 years. Maybe 2x I used it last year for like 30mins each time. It'll be nice to not have to scramble to adjust the throttle all the time. Pretty impressive on how far it'll shoot snow in it revs to like 5000rpms though 😂😂😂

I am very aware of this disposable culture we are in. As a HVAC/plumber for 38yrs . 15yrs ago bought a old Kenmore series 80 washer n dryer Easy to fix and parts a readily available. Got a smokin deal on a 1995 F150 300 6cyl with a 5spd manual for $300!!!! 81k on the ticker just had some easily fixable rust. I also have a 1996 Buick Roadmaster with 100k on the ticker. Got it for $1400 and in great shape. Unless something terrible happens(God forbid) these items should last me for a little while. Both very reliable and easy to repair. I dont want any vehicles newer than 07. They do the throw away thing in HVAC too and I explain to customers that I would just repair what ya have and stay away from this new stuff. Any small savings on your heating fuel will be quickly eat up any savings with service calls because its not if its when it breaks usually within 5 yrs tops. Taryl is tellin no lies here!!

I had an issue with getting a piston for an older Briggs. Part did not show as discontinued but it was on back order. I ordered it and got the run around. I called Briggs directly and they said their product was slowed due to Covid. The tractor is a 1972 Simplecity 3410 H which I got for free and it was worth saving. I got pissed and bought a drive shaft to engine adapter and repowered it with a 14 hp Predator. Everyone makes aftermarket parts for the Predator (Honda clone) so I figured it was the best route to keep the tractor running.

It ran for about 30 seconds and then started running fast. Now it appears to be seized. I took it to the dealership I bought it from. They took one look at the oil, it had some metal flakes in it. They said they couldn’t do anything about it (not covered under warranty), except sell me a new mower at their cost. Just a reminder this mower is one of those never change oil just add. I am going to call around to other dealers to see what they say. It has less than 10 hrs on it.

You said it Taryl, that is a rotten dinner for sure good sir. If my late Grandfather was still around I can hear him now, he would be saying, " Rotten, rotten, Rotten!" As he would shake his head in disbeleaf. I find myself saying the same thing in this throw away world for about say 50 - 75ish percent of a lot of the new stuff out there and especially the parts shortages! There thankfully still are some high quality machines available that are mainly commercial grade and the companies won't play games with their parts such as Echo. Those "other" corporations, some of them are just plain wicked and love to wring us for money rather than giving us the part we need to do our practical repairs that a lot of times can be so simple. I really appreciate you taking the time and bringing to our attention this particular situation and many more just like it that you've addressed before! I drive an old 1992 Ford Ranger pick with a stick shift and simple OHV V6. Easiest thing to work on ever. Pulled the transmission out in one day to replace the clutch and rear main seal. I also ride an old 1975 Honda CB360T motorcycle, and have a few other vintage Hondas, and I love how easy it is to work on them and the robustness and durability of those things. Things are just not made like that anymore. Thats why I'll only drive old vehicles I can actually fix, and whenever possible I'll be buying up used motors and parts to have on and for the future.

Homelite in the early 80s was owned by Textron, the helicopter people. I have a 1984 "string trimmer" from them that I still use."Weed eater" is a trade mark of Husqvarna AB. It's like "bandaid"...I mean "adhesive bandage". George C Ballas started weed eater in 1971. His company was eventually bought by Emerson Electric and merged with Poulan. Poulan/Weed Eater was later purchased by Electrolux, which spun off the outdoors division as Husqvarna AB in 2006... they hold the trademark on "Weed Eater"

Finding a part number nowdays is 90 percent of the work in fixing something. Half the time the part number has been changed at least once or worse yet-discontinued. I ended up having to make my own custom bent fuel line by putting a spring inside to stop if from collapsing becasue the original is no longer available on a machine that is just 5 years old.

It's funny you said that about buying a car somewhere else and getting service... my dad was a Toyota service dept. manager for 30+ years before he retired in 2013. They got in trouble for warranty repairs "being too high", and the dealership owner told him to do exactly what you described with Toro dealers and put any Toyota not bought from them at the back of the line. If the car was still there when they got time to work on it, they would. The owner said if a customer who bought it there's car came in while they were working on one that wasn't, they were supposed to push the one not bought there into the parking lot and work on the one that was bought there.

My last part I purchased from Jacks (a flywheel for a Hitachi leaf blower) showed on their website that it was in stock and would ship in 2-10 days. It took 61 days to receive it. Woman I spoke to at Jacks said that sometimes they have to get the part from the manufacturer. To which I asked for her to define the term "in stock". That ended our conversation. Turns out they appeared to stock very little. Now their websites shows " in stock soon."

I just fixed 4 machines my brother had laying in the shed for years, apparently he's not the most mechanically inclined, so whenever a machine stopped working he'd just throw it in the corner and buy a new one......pretty ridiculous right? So now we have 3 weed whackers, 2 snow blowers a hedge trimmer, a leaf blower and they all look and run like brand new. Restoring the vintage hedge trimmer was my shining moment and it came out beautifully. It's an old John Deere 172 with a carburetor with no primer-bulb, so it was next to impossible to get going, so i replaced the carb with an exact replacement with a primer-bulb, i still had problems keeping it running and it turned out to be a bad "STOP" switch, so i busted out the Dremel and fitted a square "STOP" switch i had in my parts bin into the handle, i soldered it up and now it starts on the first pull and runs like a raped Ape😊

Also note to a previous Taryl Fixes All episode, the prices of lawn and garden equipment is also a factor. Sadly the cheap end items you can purchase are not repairable due to repair company costs. Sadly they have to pay bills and staff wages and something that looks a bargain whether its a lawnmower, garden tractor or handheld equipment is non repairable to most repair shops. Battery is also another avenue I can see becoming disposable as most of the chinese made items tend to have parts rapidly become obsolete after a few years or some parts like motors or electronic pcb boards tend to be of a price it completely writes a tool off.

Now they are cheap as heck for small and decent size ones. But people will drive an extra mile to save a dollar and just end up buying cheap disposable junk. But the average home owner doesn't want to drop 500 on a new string trimmer. Even those those are worth repairing. This edger was what 400 or so bucks. Way cheaper then a high end one. A little wonder brand I think is around 1500 but also has a real Honda engine on it.
