The old days are gone. I`m 67, when I was 13 in 1970 I started repairing mowers when my Dads stopped running. Parts were readily available. He gave me the mower and bought a new one. I fixed it and surprised him. I mowed lawns for 4 summers for pocket change. Neighbors called when theirs would not start. Had a nice cash business for awhile mowing lawns and repairing equipment. Kept my own stuff running for decades.

My next door neighbor gave me his push mower in 1969, I had to put an exhaust valve in it because he wouldn't buy a muffler and it ate up the valve stem. He bought a new one for $28 at a local store. I didn't have a 7/16 socket, so to get the oil pan off to put some different rings in it, I ground down an open end wrench so I could get that one bolt out.

As luck would have it, my mother in law bought a warranty on it. She called them, and they did not have any replacement switch. They shipped a BRAND NEW tractor to my house all for free. I remember, back when I still had ma teef, my dad's '74 Pontiac Grand Safari wagon had a problem with the alternator. I was able to disassemble it, purchase a replacement rectum-fryer / voltage regulator from the local auto parts store, install it, put the alternator back together and install it on the car. We were back in bidness for less than $10. There was a local shop that rebuilt starters, alternators, and batteries, too. TVs were repairable...tubes and circuit boards were replaceable. It wasn't such a throw-away world back then.

If there's no recourse on repair, even though repair may be the fix, the use of new parts gets a recourse established in the paperwork. Parts replacers are a creation of being customer driven, and bean counters agree. If you helped make the situation, maybe you didn't notice, but you're the reason grandpa handed his tools down, or sold them off. They may even have been stolen. I got it for some work trade , and I figured let's see what's finally going on. I figured worst case, just go get a predator engine and slap it on. Big surprise when I took the belt cover off and saw a PTO on the cam. Got a little nervous when I started looking up parts ,as a standard piston is NLA. Found all the governor parts though and the gaskets and whatnot , so hopefully this week sometime it'll be running again. Haven't had much snow here in the last few years so I'd wager I haven't put 5 hours on it in like 3 years. Maybe 2x I used it last year for like 30mins each time. It'll be nice to not have to scramble to adjust the throttle all the time. Pretty impressive on how far it'll shoot snow in it revs to like 5000rpms though 😂😂😂

I just fixed 4 machines my brother had laying in the shed for years, apparently he's not the most mechanically inclined, so whenever a machine stopped working he'd just throw it in the corner and buy a new one......pretty ridiculous right? So now we have 3 weed whackers, 2 snow blowers a hedge trimmer, a leaf blower and they all look and run like brand new. Restoring the vintage hedge trimmer was my shining moment and it came out beautifully. It's an old John Deere 172 with a carburetor with no primer-bulb, so it was next to impossible to get going, so i replaced the carb with an exact replacement with a primer-bulb, i still had problems keeping it running and it turned out to be a bad "STOP" switch, so i busted out the Dremel and fitted a square "STOP" switch i had in my parts bin into the handle, i soldered it up and now it starts on the first pull and runs like a raped Ape😊

I'm sure I could have eventually found a float somewhere. However when I said $50 to fix the customer declined. Instead they took it to another shop, who told them we can't find any numbers on this thing anywhere. Buy a new one. Then they come back to me. I said buy a new one.

Also note to a previous Taryl Fixes All episode, the prices of lawn and garden equipment is also a factor. Sadly the cheap end items you can purchase are not repairable due to repair company costs. Sadly they have to pay bills and staff wages and something that looks a bargain whether its a lawnmower, garden tractor or handheld equipment is non repairable to most repair shops. Battery is also another avenue I can see becoming disposable as most of the chinese made items tend to have parts rapidly become obsolete after a few years or some parts like motors or electronic pcb boards tend to be of a price it completely writes a tool off.

The warranty was still valid, so I called the store to get it repaired. They explained that they had no way of repairing refrigerators and offered to settle the claim by refunding the full purchase price plus a little bonus if I would dispose of the unit for them. They did happen to mention that they had refrigerators on sale right now. Figuring that I couldn't harm a broken unit, I did what Taryl would do. Things have been thrown away for a long time. Hard to justify repairing some things when the replacement cost would be similar or cheaper. Old tvs where more expensive. Now they are cheap as heck for small and decent size ones. But people will drive an extra mile to save a dollar and just end up buying cheap disposable junk. But the average home owner doesn't want to drop 500 on a new string trimmer. Even those those are worth repairing. This edger was what 400 or so bucks. Way cheaper then a high end one. A little wonder brand I think is around 1500 but also has a real Honda engine on it.
