One of the most famous Scriabin études. Étude in C-sharp minor, Op. 2, No. 1, was written in 1887, when Scriabin was just 16 years old, and it was one of Scriabin's earliest successes.
The melody is poignant and heartfelt, showing many characteristics of Russian Gypsy music. It is accompanied by repeated chords in both hands, featuring rich harmonies, inner voices, and large spreads in the left hand. The dynamics of the piece are varied constantly to display emotion and passion and to add interest. The piece features many key changes but finally concludes in the original key. Although it is a slow and somber piece, like many other études, it is considerably difficult to perfect. [Wikipedia]
From the rich tone of this performance, we can understand why Horowitz is called the Scriabin Specialist. Its deep tone dramatically amplifies the atmosphere of this work, and each voice is harmonious while producing a different sound. The composition of the narrative in the entire piece is also interesting.
This video includes two performances from 1962 and 1985, and unusually shows very consistent performance in both. (However, there is a feeling that the latter one moves more freely.) I also recommend listening to a live performance in Moscow in 1986, which was not included in this video.
