@@bookercodes @Scrimba For me, analysis paralysis happens when I just keep my ideas in my head. What has helped has me has been writing down my ideas on paper, writing wire frames to meet those ideas, and then prioritizing what I need to do; I believe that this approach will help me to overcome analysis paralysis. Make it work then make better.

Shouldn't I avoid being a junior web developer, especially if I'm no longer a cute twenty something but in my fifties? Shouldn't I skill up until I can simply apply for work as a developer and leave off the tag of "junior"?
@MatiasBaldanza
@MatiasBaldanza 2 жыл бұрын
I'm in the same boat (a few months shy of 47.) From experience, I think you don't have to project the same image you see on most portfolio sites (cute-twenty-something) which, after a while, inevitably becomes another cookie-cutter site that follows trends and does not stand out from the rest. What you (and I) can do is to focus on something a prospective employer or client really want or need and we can bring to the table, which might or might not be age-related. For example, I am and always have been a tinkerer, so I might focus on my strength at understanding and exploiting a specific tech stack to its fullest, my communication skills gained after consulting for years, or my expertise in the business area where my target employers/customers are. We might be trainees or juniors in this particular field or stack, but we are experienced in many other areas, and if we can prove or provide a glimpse into the value we can provide-especially through strong portfolio projects and writing-we can be a great investment and bridge the gap between junior to senior in a very short time.
@toddboothbee1361

@@MatiasBaldanza Ah, if only I were 47 again! Thanks for your thoughtful answer! I've been torn between going freelance or trying for employment, and might attempt both until one or the other takes hold. The advice I keep getting is that past a certain age (40, usually), one should attempt freelancing or create a web development business. Sounds like you've already done something along those lines with your consulting. Good luck!

I don't see why, you can't "skip" being a junior dev it is not about learning for a few years about different topics, it is also about the experience you get at a job, fixing bugs, making what management asks you to make even if it's not the best way to do something, pushing and merging branches and fixing merge conflicts, all of this is important to learn if you want to seemlesly jump into a team at a company and I don't know who gives you this advice of going freelance after you're 40 but that's terrible advice, if you want to go freelance you go on ahead but it's certainly not for everyone and as long as you know what you're doing you have as much chance to get a job at a company as a 20 year old.

@@bookercodes Well, I know to be a little more creative and original with my own portfolio site. I have a large blog and ecommerce site built using django and python as my lead project site. But my other sites need better user experience and attractiveness. I'd be interested in knowing what sort of Readme files should be created for the project sites and should I include a proper Wireframe with each? I am mightily impressed with Annie's portfolio site along with the other ones you displayed. Very grateful that they allowed them to be shared like this. ..... I did like that you said "You are not the best developer today" and this took some stress out of my day. I'm trying to get so much learned that my head is ready to burst. Also you said Start with your Why. We can know the What and the How of our projects, but the Why is something we need to get clear. I need to start with my Why and when that is clear, break it down in to my Whats and Hows. Thanks Alex. Sorry for rambling and I hope I made a little sense.

These devs don't seem like juniors. Why would they present themselves as such and guarantee themselves a lower salary? Besides, I don't know of too many businesses who are crazy about training a "junior" in the basics, but want to hire someone skilled and ready to contribute. Hiring is expensive, far too much so to bank on "potential" that will walk out the door in two years.
@aspinwallx
@aspinwallx 2 жыл бұрын
I started my portfolio as a junior and kept adding as I learned more. I haven't actually touched it in a while but I spent months tweaking it. For jobs, I never presented myself as a junior, just talked about what I knew and showed them my work. Yes, junior usually comes with a lower salary but I think opportunities are more valuable than tags. Finally, it's hard to hide being a newbie especially with code, but your attitude can get you hired if somebody wants to work with you.
