The 1995 adaptation of Casper the Friendly Ghost is a lot of fun, and for its 25th anniversary, we're looking at the scenes that didn't make the cut!

I actually think it makes sense that Carrigan and Dr. Harvey's ghosts have hair and clothes, because they're recently deceased. I believe Casper and his uncles also started out with the hair and clothes they wore when they died, and them losing it could be a reference to their bodies losing it as they decompose
@Nick-yl9kv
@Nick-yl9kv 4 жыл бұрын
Mathilde Bruhn that’s definitely possible I’m guessing it was more to do with their memories though. As the film states that ghosts lose memories of their life as time passes and clothes and hair would be one of those identity based memories. And also the CGI team just probably wanted an excuse to caricature both Carrigan and Dr. Harvey as cartoon ghosts. Mainly because for Carrigan if you look at her, she has sharper makeup as a ghost and shiny bright red fingernails after dying as if she could choose her look making her more sinister looking like Ursula or Cruella. But it’s just a guess.

@@Nick-yl9kv Also, they actually wanted Carrigan all white with no clothes. However, it would've looked like she was nude, so they added her a black covering uniform. As for Dr. Harvey, I'm guessing they specifically made him look like Bill Pullman to give Kat a better emotional connection and for the audience. Because, it wouldn't feel right if Dr. Harvey looked like Ghostbusters logo or the way the ghosts were drawn in the cartoons.

@@chipchopbarbershop8426 For me, I don't consider A Spirited Beginning or Meets Wendy canon. For one, the 1996 spin-off cartoon said he's 112 years old (and will be 113 in April.) So that would mean he was a ghost for 100 years since 1895 when he died at the age of 12. While in the other movies, he was a ghost in the late 90s, woke up in a train, not knowing he's a ghost rather than choosing not to crossover to look after his lonely dad like in the original. The 1995 movie took place in Friendship Maine and the house of Whipstaff Manor where he and the trio grew up. But In the p*ssy prequel, it says it's in the Applegate Mansion of DeedsTown which wasn't even their home and Casper and the uncles are suddenly not related. Proving the 1995 version is in it's own universe.

Same. It always felt like it was the plot for a sequel by the time it got to the laboratory scene. I think the movie could've been stronger if it was more about the relationship between Casper, Kat and the Trio. Why does the Trio hate Casper making friends with people? Can Kat love Casper for who he is and not as a human? Could Casper have the confidence in himself to grow up or mature to fall in love or stand up for himself? Focusing on the themes of identity, judgement, and criticism. More of the themes of the cartoon essentially. Maybe explore that the Trio are actually jealous of Casper's friendly charm because when they were kids, they weren't allowed to have any friends or maybe they were bullied victims themselves and by their own parents. And the conflict of the movie is not Carrigan trying to find the hidden treasure, but more on the Trio trying to sabotage Casper's dreams of loving Kat. Until in the end, they all apologize and come closer as a family again, accepting Casper being who he wants to be.

The only deleted scenes that I wish were not cut out were these... 1. Casper revealing that he is the reason Kat and her father moving to this place, resulting in her losing another chance to make friends. This would build on their relationship. And it definitely makes more sense why Kat was tryin to ignore Casper at school and why she didn't want him to go to the Halloween party. And it does make the scene where Casper doesn't remember being alive more impactful, making Kat know someone has something worse than her, thus leading her to forgiving Casper. 2. Showing a picture of Stretch, Fatso, and Stinky when they were alive. We got to know what Casper looked like when he was alive, so it's only fair that we find out what the uncles looked like. But I wish we also got three other things: what their real names are, how did they die, and why are they haunting the house with Casper. We found out that Casper died from getting sick from the winter and he was haunting the house so his father wouldn't be alone. But of course, with his father being dead, Casper's should have finished business at that point and move on. But I wonder what the uncles' unfinished business are. It's rare for the uncles liking Casper, so why are they with him? 3. Casper should've still stood up to his uncles. They deserved to be frightened after a century of tormenting him. This would've been really satisfying to see.

Out of all the deleted scenes I wished they had kept Casper telling Kat that he was the reason they were there. Kat seeing the picture of the trio when they were alive and Casper standing up to his uncles. While having the picture scene taken out didn't hurt the movie I think it wasn't a good idea to cut the other two. Casper standing up to them would have been good development for all of them. Casper wouldn't let them push him around anymore and if we had actually gotten a sequel to this movie maybe the trio would have more respect towards Casper and maybe acted nicer towards him.
@DarkHeroesForever
@DarkHeroesForever 3 жыл бұрын
I agree because one of the biggest grips I have about the movie was that there was an actual moment to develop the Trio as real characters beyond just being comic relief that was when the moment they were about to kill Dr. Harvey in order to make themselves a quartet, a fully drunk Dr. Harvey tells them that he was gonna break his bargain with Carrigan to let the Trio stay at their home, and it was this response that led to them to have a change of heart even by trying to stop Dr. Harvey from falling to his death down on a manhole, but once he shows up back in the mansion as a ghost, the Trio basically return back to their mischievous ways as if that moment they had at the bar never happen. Yet, I would've been more forgiven if that scene with Casper standing up to them wasn't remove because it shows that Casper wasn't gonna put up to this crap anymore, but we didn't any of that in the final version, and honestly it's one of those things that makes the movie kind of hard to revisit especially after seeing to this, at least to me.

No matter the pacing or tone, there was really no call for cutting the scene where Casper tells off his uncles. That would have been a great payoff and would show some character development, as now Casper HAS a reason to stick up for himself. Having said that, the one thing that always got me about Casper is that he constantly gets crap from the other ghosts for not being scary, yet he manages to scare everybody with absolutely no effort. Accidental or not, he has proven to be frighting. If anything, he proves that intentional theatrics are completely unnecessary, and just the existence of ghosts is strong enough to terrify the fleshbags. Also, and I mean NO disrespect by this, the Brad Garrett impersonation somehow sounds like a dead on Sam the Eagle.

I enjoy the Casper film myself, but I think some of the stuff that was in the script but didn't make it into the film like Casper telling Kat that he indirectly cause her and father to move to Whipstaff, and of course Casper standing up to his uncles for a change would've made the film a lot better, but I am still bum that not even the script explained how Amelia passed away.
@meganmarchionda1165
@meganmarchionda1165 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe the reason Casper is still around is because he feels guilty about what happened to his father. It will only be when he overcomes said guilt will he be able to move on. As for the uncles they may feel responsible for what happened to their nephew but since they don't remember what happened they can't move on. If there was something that contradicts this in the movie, I admittedly haven't seen it in a while.

Well to be fair that review was fairly farcical and dog has set its not a bad movie it's just not exactly his speed, and it's worth highlighting it's flaws where they are. A common theme in this nostalgia critic videos is that. No matter what the character says, 9 times out of 10 Doug Walker himself recommends the movies if only because they are so bad their good. Granted Doug does openly dislike several of the movies hes are viewed like the grinch and he is Not above actually trashing on really bad films like the garbage pail kids which because it's the one, *the* one he actually does truly hate it's honestly one of the most cathartic to watch and come back to and it makes me know just how honest he really is being in his performance that time. But in general I agree, I don't really see any real problem with this movie outside of Maybe some of these B plots that were in the script kind of do open up some missing places some plot holes you now little little ones nothing that really undermines the film but missed opportunities such as Casper actually standing up for himself to his Uncles would've been really nice. The loss of the song while makes sense from a production standpoint, and it isn't adding to the plot, the scene would've been SOMETHING else for Hella sure. I feel so robbed by having not in the movie

As someone who isn't a fan of NC, I think you're harsh on NC's Casper review. I know he said it wasn't that bad, actually. Even on his Real Thoughts review, he said he didn't really hate it. He actually respected what the movie was going for, it just wasn't executed all that well in terms of it's overstuffed plot and eye rolling gags. Even saying it's like the 1990 TMNT where it's flawed but he can still see the highlights and respect it's efforts for trying.

My theory as to why Casper can't crossover even after his fathers death is that he's a very special kind of ghost. Everyone is put on this earth for a reason and Casper was so sweet and friendly in life that the mortal realm could not bear to be parted from his memory when he died so young. Instead of being stuck with "unfinished business" he has a new lease on life (or should I say afterlife) of spreading friendship as a spirit.

Wanna hear something spooky? I was genuinely thinking about this movie and the animated series yesterday and then I see you put this video up today! I was thinking how weird the concept is for kids. Even though I still think it's a great movie and liked it as a kid, I remember actually crying at the bit where he talks about once being a real boy. It just reinforced that he was a dead child and as a child that was the bit that got me the most. But generally, Christina Ricci made the movie all the worthwhile for me. Had a massive crush on her.

I always found it strange that Dibs and Carrigan’s characters were criticized so much as villains. I thought they played into the Beetlejuice kids genre of the movie quite well. Carrigan wasn’t really ever intended to be some pure evil terrifying villain. The movie and Cathy Moriarty portrayed her as what she was, a narcissistic, high maintenance, greed filled antagonist. She was really there to provide a slight means for the plot to move forward and also be a method of dark comedic satire. She spends the whole movie trying desperately to get the treasure only to find out it’s locked behind a giant steel vault so her and Dibs figure a ghost could get through and then use the capsule to come back to life but neither of them actually wants to do it. Especially when she decides that Dibs should die and tries to kill him but the plot ends up having her accidentally fall off a cliff to her own death. A death that was intended to allow the audience to darkly laugh at her misfortune even having Dibs seemingly not care that she is dead. And slightly later when she thinks she has the upper hand as a ghost she is the one who unintentionally admits her unfinished business is complete sending her to the afterlife for eternity unable to return.

I think the therapy scene could’ve been better used in this way. I’d have Casper’s uncles be much nicer to him, and also be mad when he tries to hide the Harveys from them. Later in the movie; during the therapy scene fatso sits down and vents his frustration; going on about how he’s tired of Casper chasing something he could never have instead appreciating what he still has, and making himself more miserable in the process, and how he and the other uncles are constantly hard on Casper to try and get him to appreciate what he has. This scene in turn could help me Harvey realize his problems and how similar they are to Casper’s.

Such a great video, thank you! This is the one movie I have loved all my life. There are just so many layers. - As a gradeschooler, it was a spooky and funny movie with a cute ghost. - as a young teen I understood a little more of the topic (plus wanted to be cool like Kat, and dance with human!Casper😅) - But it was most devastating to watch it as a parent😭 Just thinking about Casper's father's fate is heartbreaking. The scene I missed the most (because I noticed something was missing from the first time watching) was an explanation of "my dad hit the ceiling". The song number is dearly missed, as is Casper's moment of growth. I'd like to mention that a lot of the cameos and pop culture references were not well executed in the European dub. No one knew what an "Oprah" was🤷‍♀️ But that is on the translators, not the movie itself. Thanks for the tip with scriptfly. As Disneyfan already pointed out, Casper actually is in costume, with the sword buckled to his hip. But it is easy to miss, as he didn't have it in the "flying dance" scene. (I still loved your interpretation of "dressed as a real boy"!) Oh, and I just watched this movie with my own kid and they loved it😍

With you talking about Casper's death, I just got back a memory from a (late-80s? early 90s?) sitcom called Flying Blind where a woman was watching tv with her boyfriend. She turned to him sadly and said, "Casper is so small. How old was he when he... passed away?" I really loved the set design on this movie, the soundtrack, and the really cinematic ghost effects. And yeah, the scene with Kat's mother was a tear-jerker. I also really liked the idea of Dr. Harvey becoming friends with the Ghostly Trio -- they could've easily put them in a purely villainous role and then get rid of them in the end, but I think it was way more fun and endearing to have them come around. I also love that the story was centered on the concept of the "moving on" part of the grieving process, and making that the thing the ghosts have in common with the living. PS, Carrigan's death was hilarious.

It's honestly really nice to have a lot of the trivia that's out there consolidated into one vid. Does Carrigan defeat gives you a Jafar vibe ; A human becoming a power being Genie and Ghost to have it backfire on them, trapped in lamp and crossover maybe to hell ?
@Nick-yl9kv

Nicholas Sims definitely! It was interesting as Carrigan clearly had no intention of turning herself into a ghost. I’m guessing because she’s narcissistic and wasn’t sure if it would work or even hurt. She had wanted it to be Dibs but when she died accidentally she seemed okay with it for a temporary time until it backfired. The movie dosent really State Heaven or Hell. I’m guessing it’s more of a generic Beetlejuice land of the dead kinda crossover that Carrigan had.

I would like to see a Script to Screen Episode of the original Star Wars movie. The compare and contrast between that and the final cut shows us all that a film tends to be written 3 times: first in the screenplay, second in production, and third time in editing.

Poor Devon Sawa... first they killed him in Casper.....Then they cut off and excised his possessed “Idle Hand.” So Death tired of waiting, stepped in and the “Final Destination” of a French Brick was tragically, his “ripe melon” of a dome..... Fortunately Mr. Sawa got the last laugh though.... by collaborating with “wunderkin” Fred Durst and John Travolta’s Oscar caliber scene stealing wig, and performance, that literally gave the “Cane” from Citizen Kane and the coffee mug from heartbeeps an absolute run for their money.. side note love the vid!!! Subbed!!

I have a few episodes of Casper on my dvd that has 100 classic cartoons and they are all super depressing! Not at all cheery until like the very end. In one of the episodes Casper is so sad he tries to commit suicide!
