Scripture and tradition?? One longstanding tradition is that the Sign of Jonah is Jesus' resurrection. However, this idea is not compatible with scripture. 1. In Mark 8 Jesus emphatically stated that NO sign from heaven would be allowed for first century Israel ("this generation.") Certainly Jesus' resurrection has to be understood as a sign from heaven. 2. In Luke 11 Jesus defined his ministry as the Sign of Jonah and stated that it would be the ONLY sign that Israel would receive. There cannot be two "only signs" in the same era. 3. Jesus always described the Sign of Jonah as being for a "generation" which meant the majority of the adult population of ancient Israel. However, Jesus did not parade throughout Israel or Judea displaying his fatal wounds. In fact, Jesus revealed these only to the disciple Thomas and a few other disciples. Even without his wounds, Jesus only made post-mortem appearance to a limited number of "brothers." The Jewish priests were not among those so priviledged. 4. Jesus is recorded as having predicted his resurrection at least six times, but he never included the phase. "the Sign of Jonah," when doing so. 5. In Matthew 12 Jesus defined the Sign of Jonah as his duration of burial, but did not include the words. "raised up on the third day." The ancients had no way to resolve the apparent conflict between Jesus' different definitions of the Sign of Jonah, so they chose Jesus' resurrection as a solution. Now, in the 21st century, we have the information that is necessary to understand what Jesus meant by the Sign of Jonah.
