I have recently been working with Scrivener for the first time. I purchased the program after I completed approximately 75% of my second manuscript. Wow, what a great editing software. I had to compile my first manuscript manually and that was a job in and of itself. This is worth the money. I also purchased Ms. Prince step by step online tutorial. I use it now as my reference guide when I try something new. I recommend her tutorial if you want to skip the trial and error method of learning new software. I continue to use AutoCrit and Grammarly to speed up my revision process.

@@KarenPrince-Kazz I have switched over from Word. Did not do an import but I should have. I did a cut and paste of each chapter in a course I wrote. It's 100K + pages with 100+ graphics and will do about 50 new videos that will be from 5 minutes to about 30 minutes each. I will then transfer it all into a Thinkific course. it's a course on how to trade commodities. Been doing this for 20 years.

@@daviddutymentor Oooh! David, I love stumbling upon fellow course creators, because video is my favorite thing. In Scrivener you can put all your promo and marketing info right inside your project. I wanted to like Scrivener; I really did. I was using another brand of novel writing software and thought that Scrivener looked great. Even viewing many tutorial videos, I kept thinking that the software doesn't need to be overly complicated to navigate through. I downloaded the demo and right out the door, I found myself lost with setting up chapters and trying to compile them into the proper format. Yeah, Scrivener looks great on the outside, real nice and polished. Yet, when I get into the program itself, I found myself spending more time trying to figure out how to set up chapters and get the ball rolling than writing the actual book. As of right now, it looks like I saved myself the $40. I've read the comments and it appears like I'm the minority here; everyone else is raving about Scrivener.

Appreciate the vid and info on how to import my other books into the program. I have no trouble with how to create the chapter folders from the original text... but there's no mention how to import from word with sections included. So the question is: "#" is a folder designation, so "____" is the sub-folder (or section) designation. I sure could use a fill in the blank, there. :)
@KarenPrince-Kazz9 жыл бұрын
renadam12 Hi Renadam12. I think the answer to your question is: Once you have the document with the # in front of it imported into Scrivener as a chapter. You can then split that document into scenes by placing your cursor immediately before the word where you want to split and selecting Document > split > at selection. Hope that helps. K

Hi Karen, found your video really helpful - do you have any more? I'm incorporating a first draft script into scrivener and a new user. Your hash tag trick will be helpful! 1) It's important for me to keep old drafts and refer to them - so will need to duplicate manuscript as draft two once incorporated? Will I be able to see earlier drafts automatically behind each scene or do I need to click on them? What's the best way to attach research files to a particular scene? And can I back up save these drafts onto another hard drive as I'm writing out of country right now ... any advice? Like Draft two as a word document back up? And a scrivener file? Also if I get into trouble ... do you do skype consults?

Nice overview. I've been trying to transition to Scrivener, or other platforms, primarily for screenwriting and/or short story plotting (works for me). A now defunct program that was eventually absorbed into Final Draft (or Movie Magic), is StoryView2. While a fairly simplistic system, the original functionality was excellent, keyboard shortcuts, etc. It had a timeline feature that was great for screenplays; at any rate, its gone now. Are/were you familiar with that and could you recommend a functional replacement? Best, Chris.

Adding the the "Add Folder" button to the toolbar is quite easy. I like to place it in front of the add scene button and the trash button: -Right click in the empty gray space in the toolbar and select Customize Toolbar. -Drag and drop the +Folder button to the toolbar wherever you want it. The original folder that shows up in the default new project is named Chapter 1, but it's actually a folder.

I wrote a course a few years ago and changed computers. I made a back up of my course. Now I open Scrivener and all the "folders" and pages show up on the left. But when I click on the page on the left it's a blank page. How do I get those pages to show up again? I can see the pages in the corkboard too. This happened once before and someone on the forum was kind enough to do a live Zoom room with me and fixed it right away. I don't know why it's happening now. When I open Scrivener from the desktop the backup opens. I can't find the original course. Right now, no one is replying and I contacted support over a week ago, and no reply from them either.

Could you explain how a project in progress can be transferred to a second computer to continue work on same project using scrivener?

Hello...would you recommend this for a new beginner, who is writing their first book? This seems very complicated!! All I want to do is write, and keep all of the words, saved in a folder.

Hello Dell. Scrivener is a content management system. So if you are writing a whole book, you will want to sort it into chapters and scenes, which you may want to be able to see all at the same time, and even rearrange. You could have folders for each chapter on your desktop and work in MS Word but it is not nearly as convenient.

Karen...so when you are done with formatting for ebooks & paperbacks, how do you load it up on Amazon? And does Amazon assign the book the ISBN?
@KarenPrince-Kazz8 жыл бұрын
Hello Linda. To publish an ebook on Amazon search for 'Kindle Direct Publishing'. And for paperbacks search for 'Createspace'. There will be step by step instructions. In both cases they will issue you with their own code called an ASIN number for free. But you can also buy an ISBN number if you want. Search for ISBN and the name of your country of origin.
