Looks pretty good with the O rings! On my Wireless Mouse 5000, I just wrapped the scroll wheel with self-vulcanizing PIB tape when the original wheel came apart. Surprisingly, that held up perfectly for several years and even felt like the original.

Thanks for the video. It gave me confidence to fix the wheel on my Mouse 5000. The cage for the wheel is plastic, but, if you are careful, you can pry apart the plastic cage at the seams and glue it back together with superglue.

In later versions the wheel assembly does not come apart, but you can push the oring from one side of the wheel as the axle only comes from one side of the housing. Used two orings and it works as good as new. Your video saved me from buying a new keyboard+mouse set! Kudos @germanpickle!

It looks like Microsoft have "improved" the wheel housing, instead of metal clips it is glued black plastic. I managed to break it while getting the wheel out but I fitted an O-ring and as I didn't have any glue to hand I put it back together with just one side of the housing. The wheel seems to work OK but not too sure how long it will last. I like the 3050 desktop set and the mouse is great apart from the wheel rubber which just does not last very long.

I have had to fix these mice numerous times due to the poor quality of the rubber on that wheel. If you are careful, the mouse can be fixed without opening it up. I used a small zip tie, an x-acto knife, and some super glue. After removing the old traction rubber and cleaning it, I picked a zip tie of approximately the same width. The saw-toothed area of the tie has a left an right side "rail" that help to guide the locking tooth as it engages. You need to cut these rails away with the x-acto knife leaving just the saw-toothed strip down the center. trim off the lock portion and the smooth insertion tip on the ends of the tie. Bend the tie and let it sit for a while in a circular shape (teeth aimed outward) using a paperclip or some tape to hold it for a few hours (this part helps the strip remember the desired shape, but using heat and cooling could reduce the time needed). After the piece remembers its new shape, carefully super glue one end to the wheel and let it sit until really well set (30 min for me). Now roll the wheel until the strip covers the circumference. Trim to length and glue other end. Let it set up. After this it should be usable for many, many years without having to worry about the MS rubber grippy turning to mush. Note: If you have a little burr that feels uncomfortable on the strip, just use a finger nail file to take off the burr. I have had one repair where a little of the glue got on the left or right guide wall that the wheel spins between and all that needed done was to use the x-acto knife to make a gentle separation of the two parts. I came up with this method as I didn't have the tools to open the mouse, nor did I have the o-rings that also seems to work well in this video. I think if I had a 3D printer, I would try to print the next saw-toothed strip.

Seems similar to what I did with my mouse, except that I use a soft water tube that somehow fits the core wheel because I can't find any store that sells o-rings here.

I just cut a long strip of heavy gorilla tape. I did use a straight edge and box cutter and kept it narrower than the wheel. Went around twice about 5 1/2 inch. Then just wrapped it on the wheel. No disassembly required. Works good

There is an easier way to fix the problem After the rubber is completely disintegrated. And only the plastic wheel remains. Simply cut a 4 millimeter wide insular ribbon Glue on the wheel and slowly rotate until it surrounds the wheel 3-4 times. Works well, and does not need to dismantle anything

Its a nice mouse. The scroll wheel on all Microsoft mice will get "sticky" after a couple months or so. Do the world a favor and stop buying them. Microsoft thinks you'll keep buying them. Also, the mouse works perfectly fine without the rubber ring.

The wheel on this mouse is junk. it disenegrated in less than a year. If I could find another 5 button mouse with the same side button configuration i would. the new one is plastic welded together so it dont come apart.
@kwacz Жыл бұрын
just did the repair, had to super glue the wheel piece back together because as stated above mine was plastic welded, but careful separation and it was still glueable. I opted for the thicker one and just filed away the plastic on top where it was rubbing. with the mouse back together you would never even know it was filed. Also the rubber gunk was all over the wheel encoder and all over inside. Cleaning it out while it was apart and now it works like new. The oring should last the rest of the mouses useful life and the switches and electronics seem to be good quality and should last many years
