This series focuses on using drone basses, also known as burdens or bourdons, to underpin a piano melody. According to Wikipedia [en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drone_m...] drone music is: "...a minimalist genre of music that emphasizes the use of sustained sounds, notes, or tone clusters... typically characterized by lengthy compositions featuring relatively slight harmonic variations".
The idea of imitating drone instruments - bagpipes, musette and similar shepherd instruments - in instrumental music and on keyboards goes back centuries. It gained some popularity during the 18th Century, with pieces such as musettes, bergeries, pastorales, sicilianas and variations appearing in scores of the period and since.
