After having several questions as to various aspects of cutting out the final exam. I decided to update it with a more detailed version.

just started scrolling in September 2019. I was beating myself up because I couldn't just whip the blade around like I've seen others do and had to nibble at my points. It makes you feel great when you trip accidentally on one of the "Master's Approach" to scrolling. Thanks again for your tutorial. Maybe in a year I'll try your Intarsia. LOL

I really appreciate this video. I'm a twenty four year old female who has recently fell in love with power tools. (Dremel is my favorite brand). So I bought the moto saw and then realized that I didn't know a darn thing about saws. But watching these videos has helped sooooooo much! Thank you. I love wood crafts. I have a hegner scrolls but haven't used it for several years . I am teaching gourd carving and need t do some cuts for making tops so am getting it out and your video helped me a lot. I used to do tole painting about 8years ago so did a lot of cutting. Thanks a lot.

Irv Sal The scroll saw can be a bit challenging at first, the great thing is, they don't take very long to master. Keep up the practice and you'll be a master in no time!

ScrollSawParadise Yes my first try at these practice exercises I said NO WAY... But after a couple more tries and your videos I improved quite a bit. Now I'm at least able to stay in the lines. I'm not sure if I have the blade set wrong or what but it's cutting direction is about 5 o'clock instead of straight down 6 o'clock. I've just been using it that way just to get used to it. Oh yeah and the broken blade??? Yep... Still not sure how tight to make it. Didn't break another blade yet though. And I learned to feed slower.

Irv Sal Broken blades are to be expected for any beginner, don't let it bother you too much, blades are pretty inexpensive. When your blade is tensioned correctly, pushing on the side of the blade to the left or right should deflect it only about 1/16". Again, don't worry about a few broken blades, once you develop "The Feel" you will break a lot fewer blades. "The Feel" can only happen happen with practice.

Again a very usefull tutorial. It shows very well how to use the wider pinned blades in difficult angles! I started scrolling a week ago because i found these helpfull lessons. My scrollsaw can use pinned and flat blades and its awsome to see the difference and to see how i can use both blades. And its so much fun to scroll.

Bob, I'm a beginner and love your series. Why not just exit the blade through the waste instead of having to make the tight turns?

Boats.young It will take a lot longer to cut your project and you will go though a lot more blades if you are constantly running your blades through waste area just to make a turn. This video is about learning how to make turns, that's why I show them. However, you are more than welcome to cut your project however you would like.

I would like some help on the best way to adhere the pattern to the wood. I have seen the spray on adhesive sprayed directly on the wood and the pattern is put in place. I have seen the blue painters tape covering the wood, than adhesive, than the pattern, and last packing tape over the pattern. Is one better than the other.

Hey Douglas, The type of tape really doesn't matter, the main thing is that you do use some sort of tape, the adhesive on the tape helps lubricates the blade making it last a little longer and the tape also make it easier to remove the pattern when you are done cutting. I prefer blue painters tape because it comes off the easiest, but it also is a little more expensive than packing tape. I always apply the tape to the wood then I spray the glue onto the back of the pattern then apply the pattern to the tape covering the wood Again it doesn't matter which type of tape you use. There is no need to use two types of tape on a project, one layer of either type is more than enough.

What are you thoughts on filing the backside of the blade (rounding the corners) with a file or a stone? I have seen that suggestion in a wood working magazine and wanted to know if it was worth the effort or helped when cutting? Thanks again.

+Douglas Schmitt Hi Doug, Congrats on the new saw. Rounding the back corners on band saw blades does help give the thicker and wider bandsaw blades a little better turning radius, but they are also much bigger blades. Scrollsaw blades are already designed to make sharp tight turns. I have tried rounding the back of scrollsaw blades just to see if it would help, my results ended up causing me to throw away perfectly good blades. For some reason, at least when I have tried it, rounding the back of the blade made it virtually impossible to be able to maintain the blade on the line. Maybe other people have had better results, but as I stated earlier scroll saw blades are already designed for tight turns, so there really is no need to round them. Now there are times when I have considered trying rounding the backs of the blades under certain situations. Sometimes when cutting thick wood and you are using large blades, #5 and higher, making tight turns can get a little difficult and you might get a puff of smoke here and there. The better way to handle this is to nibble out your turn as you make the turn in lieu of potentially ruining a blade by grinding on it. Hope that helps and good luck with your new hobby. Bob

YOBABYBUBBA The two woods that I use the most are Walnut and Maple, they really contrast well together. I have a rather large supply of Mahogany and Teak on hand that I use a lot. For projects that I'm not so picky about how good the wood is, I'll use Poplar, Oak and sometimes Pine.

No, a spiral blade is much harder to control. Personally, I have never found spiral blades useful.
