For residency this is pretty much true. I was an intern the year Scrubs started so this show was dear to me. It was this episode when I said this show was more grounded in reality than ER and Grey's Anatomy (I did enjoy ER for the drama, never watched a minute of Greys). The houskeeping staff commented why we were always eating in the housestaff room and we told him if we counted all the hours we were working we made less than minimum wage - the 80 hr/wk rule hadn't been in effect back then and I had an inpatient peds rotation that I was doing at least 135hrs per week since I didn't leave and only showered 2 times because it was RSV season. The pay is better today, but still horrible compared to the golden days of medicine. My nephrology attending told me his yearly resident salary was ¼ of the price of his home in Southern California back in the 70s. When I was a resident I was making 1/15th of the price of the same home. Not a horrible pay rate until you figure what it cost to get to that point. These days you really have to enjoy the art of medicine unless you're the rare one getting into neurosurgery, interventional radiology, optho or derm.
@FiveN9ne Жыл бұрын
Really? At least 19 hours per day you were working?
@Tokamak3.1415 Жыл бұрын
@@FiveN9ne My longest single shift was 44 hours - I arrived at an SICU rotation at 3AM and left the following day at 11PM - I was working the whole 44 hours except for about 1.5 hours of eating/peeing/pooping. On my inpatient peds rotation I pretty much lived in the hospital because it was RSV season. My surgical candidacy roommate pulled even crazier hours trying to get into one of the top surgical positions. That guy slept like 3 hours every other night. Even the ICU nurses who have unions protecting them get pushed past 100+/week during flu season. 19 hours/day would seem pretty cushy to any internal medicine/surgical attending because that would mean 4-5 hours of good sleep. It might happen these days because the 80 hour rules are enforced now, but it wasn't when I trained - that was when Scrubs was airing.

How is this show more grounded in reality than ER? I like both, but that is absolute nonsense. People like the janitor would never be allowed to work at a real hospital for very long, and some of the situations in Scrubs are bizarre, like that lockdown episode. Doctor Mike is spot on about this.

Factor in the now around $200-300k in student debt to get there along with the interest payments that go along with it. My uncle graduated from Med school 30 years ago and is still paying off the interest from his loans. Not that I’m saying $80-300k isn’t a lot depending on where you live in the US just that interest and loans take a huge bite out of a young doc’s salary given their hours.

@Xylarxcode3 жыл бұрын
That's become common practice in many workplaces. In the store I work at, which also has a public bathroom, they had to put the toiletpaper in a plastic tube thing that's locked at the top but open at the bottom so you can unspool it, but you can't take the roll with you. Before, we would just put the roll on the toilet and people would steal them.

@@Crunttown You need to really hang around some people in these professions. Roto-rooter charges $150 for a 5 min drain snake but most starting plumbers only end up making $60-$80k/yr. Similarly I was paid $32K/yr in Southern California but I worked about 5100 hours my intern year, so I was making about ½ minimum wage. Most of the time you can't get a residency near your family so you're living with a roomate and stealing hospital food. Of course if you end up doing interventional radiology you can make $600-$800k/yr but pediatricians end up making on average less than most grocery store managers if you count the number of hours. Same is true of most pilots and attorneys - they make less than many unskilled jobs on a per hour basis when starting. Saving somebody from a bad case of congestive heart failure and getting them home safely is sometimes more rewarding than making millions working at a hedge fund deceiving retail investors. You have to choose what's important to you in your life and what impact you want to make in the world.

why does everyone find "bidet to you" funny? i don't understand.
@phantomfever173 жыл бұрын
It's a play on words. A "bidet" is the name for the "French thing" JD was describing. But it also sounds "good day", which is a way you can say goodbye. JD didn't know the word "bidet", so while the Janitor was telling JD the word he was looking for, JD thought he said "Good day" and responded "Good day to you, sir" ending the conversation, but also revealing he didn't know what he was talking about. TLDR: it's some silly word play :)
