Quick note: The association between the tritone and the devil was begun as advice for choral composers, since the interval was the least natural for the human voice and therefore hard to hit accurately. So it was more of a "devilish" interval as in tricky to sing, rather than sounding harsh or actually believed to be somehow infernal. That's why you can find it anywhere in European religious choral music as early as recorded music can be found. There's a super awesome video covering the subject on Adam Neely's channel.

@surkey5055 Жыл бұрын
@@PeterEvans_musicwhen it comes to singing tritones, yes it's rather hard. Adam Neely actually uses an example of Eddie Vetter singing "Even Flow". On the first word of the song "freezing", there is a melodic tritone on the two syllables, F# to C. When Eddie sings this you can hear him dip a considerable amount below C. I'm not sure what it is but something makes them peculiarly difficult.

@brandonporter85093 жыл бұрын
I’m trying to remember what Music Vader had in the first Movie since imperial March didn’t appear until ESB. If I recall Vader is a strange case in usually being scored in association with something else. Either being associated with the empire in the form of the imperial March. Or appearing at times when themes associated with the Death Star and Tarkin are also on screen. In a lot of ways Vader’s theme reflects what he is. He is a tool Of the empire he is the empire he lacks a certain self agency. And that’s reflected in his musical identity being borrowed identities of other imperial threats. Vader is less his own self and more is the might of the empire personified

I've watched this video, and the Breath of the Wild "Invisible Design" video, at least two or three times each now. There's just something about your visual and aural style that is so appealing. It's the quirky, minimalistic yet extremely expressive animations. The constant musical accompaniment - when you discussed the ruler analogy, you were actually playing a rhythm on a ruler. The thoroughly accessible analysis - never does it feel like you're beating us over the head with music theory. And other things I can't put my finger on. @thereturners7564Ай бұрын
It took many years of study for music theory to finally click for me in a way that felt intuitive - but, once it did, it certainly made my understanding of music feel deeper and more satisfying, in general. That said, music theory is not always useful in every situation - despite the rigidity of its terminology, a lot of music theory-based analysis can be quite subjective in nature, and some songs outright defy concentional theory altogether, or will only use it intermittently - but, for the most part, I agree.

Leitmotif is one of my all time favorite musical concepts, and I'd love to make a video on how it exists and is so influential. In addition to what's discussed here, other franchises and media use it to their advantage such as Marvel and DC super heroes, Thomas the Tank Engine, the Looney Tunes, Beastars, and even to an extent even things like amusement parks use music to convey the different places and things they have to show. Any rollercoaster fan that hears Technonaut or Ready to Go will immediately be able to tell where it's from, and it's not just because they're obnoxiously funky tunes. They immerse you in the experience and I love it

Syncopation is why knowing drums is important. I hear a lot of people playing drums or saying that they are easy but the hard thing about drums is giving a song a *GROOVE*. That isn't something written on a sheet, it's something that a composer with knowledge in music is able to use to give life to a song...

That's not what a leitmotif is though, that's a THEME. It's not played throughout any other levels BUT those ones, and that theme isn't used anywhere else, nor in any other games. Therefore it's a theme. Super Mario Bros 3's Athletic theme IS one though since it's been used very frequently in more recent Mario games to represent, well, more platform-y and athletic stages.
@dogman152 жыл бұрын
When I hear the main theme of New Super Mario Bros., I think specifically of that game and the sequels it spun off in its sub-series. So it has a place, just not for the Mario series as a whole.

Dude! The production values on this are awesome - the way there's always a musical demonstration of what you're talking about on a ukulele or a sax or what have you, the way the animations really drive home the points you're making, just the general 'flow' of this video is really consistent and impressive. The points you're making are also really informative - you go into really good detail on all the music theory you use, it all really makes sense. Subscribe button pressed, like button obliterated.

I would say some of these are leitmotifs, in that they get linked to concepts and reused to refer to them, but other parts go beyond that and are straight up reification. The Mario theme *is* Mario, it is impossible to divorce it from Mario. leitmotifs can often be subverted, and are usually only used to a limited extent to still keep them musically fresh and interesting and to allow for them to be subtly changed. However the Mario theme is set in stone, you can't subvert or change it (melodically at least, lots of people reharmonise it and play it in different styles), and its used in large sections as a stand in for Mario, rather than to *hint* at Mario. So I'd say its gone beyond a simply leitmotif and now *is* Mario.
