I was the tape op. that recorded this. Stuck in my head all these years; "eat it on the way home." Camera was on sticks on top of one the Winnebagos. Danforth & Pape area, middle of the night. Had a painful day shift at SIFTO in the morning too

Thx for sharing. I love the inside baseball! How much of this was scripted and how much was adlibbed? Did they do several takes? I always wondered about the on location shoots. I half expected Rocky to jog by in the middle of this scene. Did you only work out east?
@timmeh19593 жыл бұрын
@@mikesmith-nj1ij It was all scripted, but if they got off-script a little bit and it worked, they'd keep it. "Close enough for television" was the order of the day. They were under alot of pressure to keep it moving, because we had 3 or 4 set-ups to do in a shift. And they got really resourceful & creative because the budget was slim. John "Tinker" Bell directed. We were under the CN Tower one night, in front of the hole that became L'Hotel shooting a "Melonville 3 stop subway" skit. Huge problems with CBC in the camera viewfinders (from the transmitter on the tower), so I assured them it was not going to tape & looked for someplace warm while they tried various fixes like tinfoil hats for the cameras. I cautiously opened the door to an unmarked Winnebago, thinking it was some sort of office where I could sit for a few minutes. John Candy was in there by himself. I started blurting out apologies as I backed out, but he was up in a flash, grabbed me by the arm & dragged me inside. We drank Courvoisier out of little white styrofoam cups until it looked like they were ready to roll again. He wanted my whole life-story, so I gave it to him. He was laughing & nodding & completely captured with me. Nothing about him at all. He wouldn't have it. Later on that night he had to fall face-first into a pile of inert mud. Twice. They were all troopers. Adding to another comment, I agree that Al Peck could have been worked up into it's own thing. If they added a weekly guest or band or something, I felt there was enough material for a weekly show. Just like they did with Super Dave. I worked on that one too. That's where we first saw The Barenaked Ladies. Floor manager buddy had to be at rehearsals & came looking for me afterward: "These freaks are gonna be HUGE!" he said. He was pretty pumped about it. I've been sent out to Edmonton for NHL games & skiing at Lake Louise, but I'm mostly in the east. Mtl, Ottawa, Trono. How's that for a story? I didn't know at the time how special that night would become. How often do you get invited to sip Courvoisier with John Candy?! (I wanted to mix it with Coca Cola, but thought that would be gauche, even using styrofoam coffee cups, lol.) Incidentally, there were two versions of Bizarre (where Super Dave originated). One for US cable where the actresses appeared topless (models actually) and the Canadian version where everybody kept their clothes on & didn't swear. Just like Toronto in the early 80's.
