@uni blab to be honest I agree. I am personally entertained more by this show as a whole vs the total body of SNL. Obviously Eddie, Belishi and a others mentioned became icons individually and has some the best body of work SNL or any show ever aired but in the grand scheme I like this show better.

@Jim Are you on crack? SCTV was 10x funnier than SNL, especially SNL in the 80's. SCTV was clever and intelligent humor. SNL was trying to hard to be hip and topical and ended up being boring

I thought it was funny, but now I just watched it again today for the first time and I was howling so loud I had to pause it twice cause I LITERALLY FELL OFF MY SEAT laughing so hard and now I have a headache for the rest of the night... Damn that feels good... Canadiana at it's VERY BEST!! Mocking in a fun way our American counterparts - who invented practically Everything... and although we are not as successful we find a way to have a laugh in our own way.. this is SHEER BRILLIANCE from the BEST of the BEST comedians in this country in the 70's.. If you think of it from an ACTOR's standpoint even these characters are SO GOOD! So rich, believable, etc.. it's hard to believe just how Awesome SCTV was in those days - in this skit alone there are Multiple levels of comedy!! Just looking at the face's of Martin Short, John Candy, Andrea Martin... they NEVER BREAK CHARACTER! And another thing: comedy done RIGHT is NOT POLITICAL!! They didn't need to create a whole damn show called, "we hate the president so we're just going to bitch about him for this whole episode!!"

I saw it all when it was new. Spent my formative years with those incredible talents on my TV screen. Grew up in the wilds near Toronto, but eventually got to see some of their stage revues at the venerable Old Firehall, basically a dinner theatre, and saw all these original cast members on stage. Plus others whose work was equally brilliant -- Peter Aykroyd, Robin Duke, Tony Rosato. And Levy as Trebek ("Alex Trebel") is spot-on in presenting Trebek's frustration with some of his dozy & ditzy high school contestants on "Reach For the Top," a classically stodgy Canadian idea of a game show from the 1960s and 70s. I used to marvel at the brilliance of some, and the stupidity of others. SCTV's team nailed it!

Eugene Levy such a grossly underrated comedic talent. EDIT: Evidently a lot of people replying to my comment are having diaper rash because I stated “underrated”. Like every other comment on social media, there’s always HALF WITS who have to take exception, thus I’ll clarify my statement for those cry babies: Compared to Candy (SCTV) and Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, and a long list of others from SNL, Eugene Levy, though just as funny if not funnier, didn’t enjoy the same level of fame. I’m sure this will start a whole new string of keyboard-warrior pantie-waste replies. 🤷🏻♂️

Yes Eugene is a grossly underrated comedic actor. His Bobby Bittman character is so good. The sketch centered around a Bobby Bittman PSA for literacy done in a children's library cracks me up every time. As Bobby Bittman gives his synopsis of Moby Dick he blows cigarette smoke on the kids and taps his cigarette ash off on the librarian's desk is pure comedy gold.

One thing I love about these skits is that they're not reading off cue cards in really obvious ways the entire time, unlike SNL now where it's painfully obvious. They actually took the time to learn the lines and characters. It adds a lot more to the skit.
