Scuba Buddy Check Buddy System - Full Version (Parts 1 & 2)
The weather is warming up, time to get ready to dive. Part One covers several buddy check systems (PADI, BSAC, NAUI), plus some elaboration on reasons for various parts of the check. The video then covers the system I teach my students.
Part 2 covers some in-water buddy practices and some buddy system oddities from this part of the world (Japan/Asia).

Ivory, I'm so sorry to hear that. However, thanks for posting up that valuable experience for folks, which demonstrates how perilous even shallow water can be when we are carrying so much weight. Dive safe, dive often.

I have my own written out checklist. Not only my equipment, but checking out my buddies gear, asking about the dive site, currents. Even checking for a dive flag. And an after action review. What happened, what went ok, what should be changed etc...

I have been out with 3 different operators since getting certified, now have a dozen dives logged, not many i know but its a start. I dont have a regular buddy and rely on "insta buddy" assignments which is ok with me at this time. The "buddy check" as I was taught and as many have discussed, does not occur in my experience. I guess the DM's observe how i put my gear together on land, but once on the boat, when told to get ready, I put my kit on, sit on the side of the boat, give the DM the "ok", he goes yes and in I go, swim to the buoy and wait to descend with everyone. no one checks my gear and I don't check any one else. I have my own mental checklist i go through when gearing up to ensure everything is done and to my satisfaction before entering the water and I have all my own gear that I service myself and have spent lots of time in the pool and ocean with. This may make a difference in the "buddy check on the boat" routine, I dont know. I dont watch others when gearing up as i am very self aware of my own gear, knowing its up to me to make sure everything is ok as I know I wont be checked before entering the water. Or maybe I am being watched by others and have not done anything wrong to cause them to object whilst I gear up. Again I dont know. But I do know, that the "buddy check" as taught and discussed does not happen at the 3 professional operators I have been too. Including the dive shop i certified with and later returned for a rec dive. Maybe its just me and I am not very observant on the boat.... do others experience this lack of "buddy check" at dive shops when going out for a dive with them. Thanks Jim for your channel, I have found it educational and entertaining...

Damien, this comment is such an important and useful contribution to this video. So many thanks for posting. There are a lot of discussions out on the net debating personal responsibility and the assigning of blame in the rare events that some poo does hit the fan. It's natural for new divers to be somewhat dependent on dive pros and boat staff, consciously or not. However, in those rare cases where some FUBAR did occur, the blame generally goes back to individual divers (debated, but seems the consensus). Online forms are constantly encouraging new and intermediate divers to take increasing proactive responsibility for their diving equipment and adventures. Confidence and experience certainly have a lot to do with this shift, but mindset makes a surprising contribution, in my experience. You know, I have a video topic related to this in my development notes. You've inspired me to bring this one forward in development. Thank you, Damien, for posting your thoughts and experience.
