Scuba Diving Buddy Check - Part 1
The weather is warming up, time to get ready to dive. Part One covers several buddy check systems (PADI, BSAC, NAUI), plus some elaboration on reasons for various parts of the check. The video then covers the system I teach my students.
Part 2 will cover some in-water buddy practices and some buddy system oddities from this part of the world (Japan/Asia).

Head-to-Toe is the same for me. I also have a checklist with an acronym too. Spending 20 years in Aviation, there’s a very good reason why aviators use checklists, even if they’ve memorized procedures. Many of the best advancements in diving came from aviation, and the two industries actually share far more in common than most people realize. As such, I developed a checklist for pre-dive, through-dive, and post-dive. I abbreviate it to shorten it for new students. Actually started drafting a new article on arguing why it’s well-past time the dive industry as a whole finally followed aviation’s example and began implementing CL’s to diving at all levels.

Funny, I have the same Issue with acronyms and do it from head to toe too! What I check in addition is the Computer, especially if it is a new buddy: is it working? Any Errors on the screen? Battery full? And another comment: you are very right about the Seaquest BCD (they are now part of Aqualung but the Clip is the same). I own the Aqualung Axiom and on my Stress and Rescue Course some of the others had big trouble to understand how to open it in a Rescue Situation. So this is a very good advice! Thanks for reminding me to point that one out, if I don't dive with my girlfriend together..

@@DiscoveryDiversTokyo the funny thing is: I didnt realize that the Clip is an Issue for other till the Rescue Course.. For me it is easy to open and comfortable because it is like a hinge. So it is always good to have a look to your stuff like you see it the first time.. Thank you for your nice Videos!

Good reminder! I shamefully have to admit that all too often buddy checks amount to 'You checked yours? I checked mine'. Which of course is absolutely crap!

While I can still easily remember the PADI buddy check acronym BWRAF, I can't remember what the letters actually stand for. (I remember the acronym as Bruce Willis Ruins All Films.) Like you, I simply do a head to toe review of what we need to dive and what I need to know about of my buddy's equipment.

Head to toe doesn't cut it I'm afraid. Checklists like BWRAF or GUEEDGE are more effective....

@@DiscoveryDiversTokyo Jim, my view is checklists are more reliable / less reliant on memory c.f. head to toe and you would never rely on head to toe for technical diving. Cheers!

@@mendezfe Hi, Daniel...oh, you're spittin' truth right there. Good point on the drysuit. I should have added the additional checks when a drysuit is being worn; zipper, inflate and deflate. Good catch!
