Man you're just too refreshing for me not to comment... You just exhale such a good vibe... Iʼm struggling to understand if multi LEDs torch is only for video or does it have any use more on the freediving/spearfishing side... Hard to get concrete info for a newbie... (Donʼt understand how everybody sware by the beam if it scare fish so much...) Anyway hopefully you can help, if not, just continue to be the way you are! ;)

Hi Mat. Good grief...what a kind comment. Makes all the hard work of the channel worth it! On the light question, the wide beam spread video lights are generally only used for video, since the beam is so dispersed it only carries a short distance in the water for practical illumination. I'm not well-acquainted with spearfishing and if there are any special needs for that use. Think of a really uniform blanket of light on all the floor immediately in front of you. Other lights (like the ones I was wearing in the video) are more like lightsabers and cut narrowly through darkness and even sediment for a long(er) distance. Although the latter lights are ideal for signaling and night use, they will produce hot spots on the sea bed, making use for video un-ideal. In a pinch, I used to shoot video in the outer edges of the bright spot on the sea floor when illuminating at night or in dark areas. If any more Qs, feel free to ask!

Standard tube light with or without my wrist-mount is my standard setup...I don't like a mount that I have to grip with my hand. When I'm not using it, if it's not mounted, I prefer to clip it off.

Curious, what is the typical amount of lumens would you be looking for in LED light? Would there be a difference between primary vs secondary? Recreational vs Tec? Good videos. Safe diving.

Hi, Allen. Thanks for the great Q. I don't do any tech these days. When I did, I had the biggest, brightest canister there was. Honestly, I prolly should pay more attention to lumens.. The primary I favored in this vid (EASun) puts out 1600. Since I use mainly i the daytime for signaling, I'm looking for a combination fo brightness and beam tightness so my signal can be seen. As for backup, I go with 3-cell LED that is brightest as possible. For tech, I'd use a twist on, for rec, twist or reed I recon are fine. What are your thoughts?

Where can one find the foldable goodman handle of your new primary light?

Another very useful video, thank you very much! :) I'm currently in the market for a primary light, and I'm wondering what your views are on canister lights versus ehh, what's a good name for the other type? Integrated batteries? And is it worthwhile to invest in a light that can switch between spot and flood? I always seem to see people dive with spot lights (except for video), so I guess there's a good reason for that :) I think I subbed too late to help you get to 1k, but hey, onwards to 2000, right! :)

Ron Snijders Many thanks for the sub 👍. I dove with a canister light for a handful of years. It was a 24W Halogen and the beam was insane...I think I used to cook fish underwater. The cord was a lot to deal with and I’d never go back to a canister unless I needed illumination on dives that lasted 1-2 hours (tech dives). The hand-mountable lights are much more compact and manageable, and about as bright. My halogen was adjustable beam, but now, most popular lights seem to be narrow beam (except for video lights.) narrow beam is def the way to go for signaling in day, and at night, the only time I used wide beam was for video, or when I was with a student with an underpowered light. Nowadays, I’m only narrow beam and don’t miss wide. Poor viz is another condition where narrow beam is a must.

@@DiscoveryDiversTokyo After this video and your answers to my questions, I ended up getting a Metalsub XRE1250-R. It's quite a beast of a light. The combination of durability and a battery that doesn't have to be removed to charge (but can be replaced easily, so bringing a spare is possible), so less wear on the O-rings sold me on it. If you're interested in extremely crappy GoPro-footage of 1.5m-viz Dutch cold water soup diving (really selling this, ain't I?), you can see it in action here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnqqfnyGqrp8i9k

Any thoughts on strobes / marker beacons for night dives?

Thanks for the Q. Back in the day, I used to think about these for navigational purposes, but the expense back then dissuaded me. Might be cheaper now. However, have never seen anyone use, must be a reason ;)

Thanks for nice and useful video. I have a back-up and a video light. both are with sliding magnetic switches - i consider that as better protection of un-commanded switching (somewhere in my travel bag during flight for examle ))) ). but didn't managed to got a pimary light yet. please send me a message with contact details and model of our aluminium primary light. it looks good for me. maybe i'll choose it too. Maybe one day i'll visit beautiful Japan to experince diving there. ;) best regards
