Dove in the Devil's Den in 1972 when it was just a hole in the middle of a cow pasture. You used to have to dive in through the hole on top and climb out via a jerry rigged ladder up the side and crawl out thru another smaller sinkhole that was connected by a small crawl space cavern. The bottom still had the remains of a tree that had fallen through when the sinkhole opened up. Neat place and very clear water. At the time it was not opened to the public, you used to have to park on the side of the farmer to market road and climb over the barbed wire fence to the middle of the cow pasture, the whole was surrounded by barbed wired so the cows would not fall in. There were still some trees surrounding it and the locals (and cows) could get some shade. Only some of the locals knew about and some of us students at U of Florida that had local friends. Now it is an attraction open to the public.

Great attraction but a bit of a shame that they just slammed a staircase right in the middle of it and commercialised it... Sounds like it would have been really exciting having to find this beautiful natural cave and climb down a rope ladder into it.

@@silent.-killerYou actually could only jump down into Devil's Den from the sinkhole opening. The ladder was only to get out as it was at an angle that hugged the curvature of the cavern. It went up about 3/4 of the way up the side to a ledge where you could only crawl out as I described above. Oftentimes the ladder was higher than the water level (fluctuated based on rainy season) and you had to have some upper body strength to make it up. I remember having to help my girlfriend up the ladder and you actually would have to wear swim fins to propel you up enough to grab hold of the ladder if the water level was too low. Exciting times indeed.

Devils Den is one of the most beautiful & fascinating places ever! I've lived in florida my whole life, and a place i really wish you guys would dive is the Ocklawaha River! Its really dark tho, but i know you and Brandon would find a ton of cool treasure! Ocala National Forest!! Silver springs & Eureka bridge!

When my mother was a child, that big opening was the only way in and out of the swimming hole. She said she had to climb some kind of ladder to get in and out. I went there once and, as you said, the pictures don't do it justice. Also, the folks running the business told us that the nearby neighbors used to have their own underground access to the cave system but the government (local, state, or federal, he didn't say) sealed them up. I'm sure you saw some tunnels in the swimming hole that were blocked with metal bars.

I have been driving underwater excursions for a long time and half a year ago, we went to Sevastopol to look at the places where the battles took place in 1941. The dive passed without problems, but when I discovered an anti-submarine mine ... I almost gave my soul to God. I don’t know how I kept my cool and for communication (I’ve been using a full-face mask with two-way communication for 4 years already), “rescue, mine here” squeezed out the rescuers and the military worked very quickly, which is an undeniable plus, but I suffered as much fear as ever, even when conducting rescue operations, evacuating wounded divers from the underwater cave, there was no such pressure.
