Scuffles and arrests at UT Austin; Columbia suspends pro-Palestine students

Police in the United States have clashed with students at a university in the city of Austin, Texas, and arrested dozens as they dismantled an encampment set up to protest Israel’s war on Gaza.
The arrests at the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) on Monday came as Columbia University in New York City also began suspending students after they defied an ultimatum to disperse.
The protesters are calling their universities to cut ties with Israel, which some experts at the United Nations say is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Israeli forces have killed at least 34,488 Palestinians since October 7, when fighters from Hamas launched unprecedented attacks inside southern Israel, killing 1,139 people and taking dozens captive.
The protests have upended university campuses across the US, with the number of arrests approaching 1,000 as the final days of classes wrap up.
Al Jazeera’s correspondents are covering the protests from coast to coast. Heidi Zhou-Castro is reporting from the University of Texas in Austin, Teresa Bo reports from Columbia University in New York and Kristen Saloomey reports from Yale University in in New Haven, Connecticut.

While attending university during the 1960's, I felt it was my duty to protest against the deceitful lies we were being told about the Vietnam War. Looking back, we all know that the war proved to be a total disaster. 58,000 Americans lost their lives and approximately 290,000 came back severely wounded. All for nothing. At that time, I don't remember being told that I would be suspended for protesting. Of course, we were often told, "America, love it or leave it". Also, some of you might recall that a number of unarmed Kent State university students were shot and killed by our National Guard for protesting against the war. Some things never change. I pray it's peaceful. Hopefully Biden realizes soon how bad this is for him if he doesn't act. I'd hate to see another 3.5 years of Trump, and all Biden is doing right now is losing votes here.

Oh how the young touch my heart, fervent, full of energy & not yet encrusted with vested interests, they are a force of society. How much, but just how much I appreciate these manifestations, which will, by their very nature, affect the heinous situation they are fighting for. And thanks too to Al Jazeera, which, despite its roots, gives us good, very good reporting, investigations & analyses which are first class. When I want to know how things stand I go to Al Jazeera to find out.
