I learned after my first chair with these joints to cut the dadoes before bandsawing the legs to shape. Working with precise rectangles allows me to set a sled for the dadoes with all sides of the wood firmly and accurately clamped in the sled. I also round over the joint where it meets the radius on the seat before shaping the legs. To get a snug fit I work on the seat with the rabbet bit before gluing the two outer boards to the seat. This approach was inspired by my diminished hand dexterity.

I really like that workflow. Any time you can cut joinery simply in square stock prior to shaping its usually much simpler. Interesting that I don't think I've seen it done that way. Thank you!

@@JeffMarxWoodworking I recently tracked down a copy of Sam Maloof: Woodworker. There’s a 14-page spread of photos and explanation of his process of making a rocking chair. Two photos show front and back legs dadoed before being shaped. That said, he had the strength and hand and eye coordination to do precise work freehand.

I bought the template drawings from Canadian Woodworks who designed these stools, you can find the link here: www.canadianwoodworks.com/collections/templates/products/sculpted-contemporary-bar-stool The plans and support were great. I hope you build one/some and it goes well.
