I always wanted to do that! Expression and detail down to the veins! If I hit the lottery, I'd have a house with gargoyles! The only thing better than beautiful stone, is beautifully carved stone!

I started by using old railroad spikes I found - then I bought cheap automobile chisels then heated them using a barbecue charcoal and a bellows (or a leaf blower) to white hot and purged them in organic oil - it turned the cheap steel into carbide - just a bit of blacksmithing know how and you can make whatever you need

SubMoto The clay bust is first made to get the actual shape the sculptor desire. Plaster is splashed on the finished clay bust to create a mould, finally removing the clay bust after the mould is set. Plaster is then poured into the mould to create a replica of the original clay bust. This plaster bust is then used as a model & measuring guide to shape stone into the final version.

Why can't you just use the clay busy as a model?

+ΗΜανασου Ξεβρακωτη Clay dries out and cracks. It wil get damaged by chips of stone flying off, or by someone walking into it, or by measuring tools. It's just not permanent enoough. A plaster cast is.

Another question, if you don't mind: Is there a painting course? The Flemish painters are the greatest example of old master paintings in my opinion, specially Hugo Van Der Goes and Hans Memling.

What was that white paint he put on clay? I was thinking to varnish it to keep it from cracking, but I think white paint would be much better as I carve on white sandstone.

It was the first layer of plaster. Later on the plaster was made much thicker for making a lost plaster mold. You can see him beginning to pry it open shortly after that

I cant wrap my head around carving, I can understand sculpting in clay, because you're adding and can always take away, but how the heck do you carve around a whole sculpture, if you take away too much then you can never go back, do you visualize the entire thing in your head inside the block, im sure there are methods that make it easier, but it seems wayyy harder than painting or sculpting with clay

Step 1: make a maquette. Step two: measure it. Step 3: transfer the measurement onto the stone. Step 5: carve away anthing outside your measured point. Repeat. A simple outline template will help quickly determining which part of the stone needs to be taken off. Measuring takes out the guesswork

I am not sure about marble, however I once made a wooden sculpture that was around a meter high. It took me 8 weeks to sculpt it into the shape I wanted, and another 2 weeks to put little details such as hair, wrinkles, etc. However I only worked on the weekends, so if you were really committed you could get it done in 1-2 weeks.
