Little bonus post-script: While making this video, I found out the Frustrated Furry's Twitter account had been suspended. I have no idea what for, but given the fact that they pretty much let you say whatever you want on Twitter now... it must have been pretty ridiculous! Thanks for watching, and happy Canada Day/Independence Day to my North American friends... hope you already commissioned your holiday themed yank-material, otherwise it might be too late!

As an active commissioner who trusts strangers with money to draw me stuff, I usually give a week of silence before I poke to see what's up. Artists are humans with entire lives at work, not just slaves behind a canvas for you.

I've never commissioned artwork but I feel like if I was handing somebody a bunch of money to draw me something, potential timeframes would be something we would talk about before the money ever left my account. Not saying I would need an exact date or time, but like, if there was nothing in your bio about turnaround time, at least give me an estimate

Same here. If the queue and rough timeframe is made known up front, I'll expect a delay for sure. I'll ask every couple of weeks for an update if they hadn't gotten back to me by then. Most artists don't advertise it, but I'm sure most would have a rush option for 1.5x or 2x the finished picture cost if you absolutely need it now.

Not seeing any of the national confederate flags, just ones for two or three different militaries within the Confederacy. And the Confederates weren't the only ones wanting slavery to continue, they just had a different economic reliance than what the Union was pushing for. Edit: Correction. At the still on about it not being a swastika (there's over 30,000 swastika and have been used in several cultures around the world before the one used by the former German Workers' Party), can spot the blood-stained banner in the right. As for the flip thing, that's just on if they were for big government or small government.

This Dose kind of got lost in the sauce I think. All the confederate history and is the guy racist or not is irrelevant to the simple question of who was right and who was wrong here. It all really boils down if there was an agreed upon timeframe for the completion of the commission and did the artist not meet that timeframe. From the facts presented here, it's really not clear. The furry dude is definitely a weirdo (and think about this for one moment. In probably 10 years time, calling these goobers weirdos is going to be hate speech or some shit and considered non-inclusive at the rate we're heading) and posting screenshots of the conversation he had with the artist is a douchebag move. The artist, if they didn't finish the commission in the agreed upon timeframe (which it kind of sounds like is the case) is absolutely in the wrong partially as well and then trying to act like you have some sort of moral objection to what you were asked to draw AFTER taking the money is a douchebag move as well. I'll agree that many artists have ridiculous workloads due to being very in demand and have long wait times for their work as a result. And I'll agree that many people who commission their work are absolute idiots about it who don't want to pay because they don't consider it real work, or think they charge too much "for something that took them a couple hours to do" and think these people should be at their beck and call. But I'll also admit, a lot of artist have shit for work ethics, are constantly behind schedule, get lazy, miss deadlines, and just don't take their work seriously and run it like a business. Basically, there's enough wrong to go around in most of these situations.

Oklahoma wasn't a part of the Confederate States of America. Wasn't even declared an official state until about 42.5 years after the Civil War. And Buckley did like most and used ones like the Confederate Navy Jack (2nd) or Northern Virginia Militia battle banner, which only represents those parts of the military, to refer to the Confederate States of America rather than one of the three official or even other two unofficial national flags of the Confederacy. Buckley also didn't point out what the Democrat/Republican flip actually was, and like most others, also ignored that the Union had other plans for continued slavery, not the intention of completely ending slavery as people are taught in public schools. Even our government websites cover these things that our schools chose to leave out.

Most furries avoid being assholes to artists they commission. You want to make sure not to stress the person who has a life outside of their artwork. It would be understandable to be upset if it was taking 6 months to a year to make it, but 3 days is actually pretty generous. Artists are still people, and you have to give them time. I'm DEEP in furry commissioning culture, and let me tell you, furries seriously UNDERcharge for what they do. A lot of them suffer from the classic professional artist issue where they see their negatives far more than their positive. The ones that charge so much more than the rest, still don't charge what professional non-furry artists charge for their services often. Artists in even the middle echelons of their field also often have MASSIVE queues; I've had artists legitimately take over half a year to get to my piece, because they take their time, often have a second job since freelance art just doesnt pay the bills for YEARS, and, typically, they still desire something in their life besides their jobs. You covered this all, but its important to reiterate.

Does not the medium affect the price? Digital art is much easier to fix than oil on canvas, or other material art, and you don't need to buy much for supplies. What, just power and a stylus, unless getting a new pad, than that as well?
@Addersea
@Addersea Жыл бұрын
@bodyrumuae2914 Medium does affect the price, but all mediums have their difficulties. Digital is an entirely different skill-set, different way of thinking and creating altogether, especially alongside the technological aspects (from controlling layers and plug-ins, to as advanced as lighting and rendering engines; that knowledge can be a pain to grasp to professional standard for some art styles!) It also comes with the social expectations around commissioning, like 'I dont like that arm, redraw it for me' 4 times for no more money, where the artist using acrylics may have a better-understood case for 'we agreed this in the sketch, alterations will take me 7 hours, more money pls' 😂 Not to entirely disagree with you, just to expand and add - maintaining, learning, and developing digital tools/skills is *far* more strenuous than implied by the comparison to more traditional styles 😋 The price *IS* impacted, but imo it bloody well shouldn't be hahahah
@bodyrumuae2914
@bodyrumuae2914 Жыл бұрын
@@Addersea The artist doesn't have to follow that "social expectation" you gave. They could charge for edits after the commissioner wasn't clear with their request at the beginning or later changing their mind.
@Addersea
@Addersea Жыл бұрын
@bodyrumuae2914 You're right, I entirely agree! SIdestepping those expectations can still have impacts though. Say you have a business page for your art; if their expectation is that you'd make multiple amendments for free, nothing stopping them from getting mad, refusing to pay (/pay the rest), and leaving bad reviews on that page even though the artist would be entirely within their rights. Of course a lot of this can be reduced by good professional practice, EG a contract or agreement in writing beforehand, but I've still seen it go down with people trying to argue 'this isn't an amendment, it's such a tiny tweak, cmon don't be unreasonable' - especially for things they didn't understand the work behind. Social perception around artists just plays a lot into that entitlement, and it sucks to see :(
@Sterkleton_
@Sterkleton_ Жыл бұрын
i see both sides to this. Sure the artist was straight forward with the refund. But as Buckley said, they took the money for the commission in the first place. But i can understand why they had to make some form of statement back once the person tried to out them publicly. Problem is, their statement shows that they accept work without thinking about their own long term image.

The only way I can see the artist not being a hypocrite is if they took the commission before the Frustrated Furry gave the details of the drawing. If the FF gave the details with the commission and the artist still accepted it, that's hypocritical of course, but if the details came after the artist accepted the commission, that could be understandable.

I have a friend who makes 3D models and VRChat avatars of peoples furry OCs. You thought $1000 for one piece was a lot? For his highest tier package with animations you're looking at a down payment on a new car. I've been in the furry fandom for well over a decade, have seen and heard my fair share of horror stories involving commissioned artwork over the years. Sometimes it's the artist themselves who are at fault, other times it's crazy commissioners who are being unreasonable. In this case? Yeah, they're both in the wrong, and it's made worse by making this public on Twitter of all places... The commissioner, first of, is being way to unrealistically impatient. Were they hoping to get their art piece in time for Memorial day specifically? Perhaps they should have planned this out more than a week in advance! Sometimes an artist has a commission queue to get through before they can get to your piece. Other times, life gets in the way for the artist and they have to address that before coming back to drawing again. Either way, don't expect a fast turnaround unless you're literally first in line for the queue and the artist is actively working on the piece. Second, the artist shouldn't have accepted this commission. I'm only assuming this but the "oh, I have an exam" excuse sounds like them stalling for time. Then the "I'll just refund you" response to the commissioner right after suggests to me that they weren't comfortable drawing the piece to begin with. Many artists have a TOS outlining what they will and won't draw, and even have their commission queue publicly viewable so that the commissioner can gauge how long it's going to take. Again, I'm only assuming, but it's sounding like this particular artist didn't do either. I've seen this happen so many times over the years. Usually the artist is desperate for money and they take on an overwhelming queue, or they push the boundaries of what they're comfortable drawing just to get a cash flow going. Then these artists just simply disappear one day, gone for months at a time without a single word to the commissioners. Usually because they burn out in these scenarios, either from being overwhelmed by their massive queue, or they accepted a ton of commissions for subjects they're not comfortable drawing. Then they leave a ton of commissioners high and dry without a refund. I'm not saying that the artist in this video did exactly that, but I recognize the mentality and "red flags" of said artist here. Yet another artist that couldn't say "no" and set healthy boundaries for themselves.

i can speak for the artists, only as a commisioner. but i do think its a reasonable response, that if it is genuine that this person was dealing with exams delaying the work, they shouldve been upfront before money was ever moving, that "hey just a heads up, exams are coming up so i may not be able to get to work on your piece for a week" if you know a situation is coming up, that is likely to delay and impede a commission, let the commsioner know. ive been very leniant with those i commission, from. even seeing a work delayed by much longer but didnt have issue because i recieved constant updates on the progres. i do believe, when Money has already been transfered, you should be transparent and give updates when stuff slows down the work. to get into a horror story of my own last year, i commissioned furry art for 2 people, the artist we knew, we commisioned from a few times prior, however, we had paid them this time for 2 works, i gave em room to work, but after a month of not hearing anything, we messaged to get a update, we got a response a week later, apparently they didnt even start on either, because something came up, i forget what but it clearly wasnt equipment related, but it took anouther month before we finally got what we asked for, it left us pretty miffed and with a sour taste in our mouth, that we were kept in the dark for little over a month on something we paid upfront for, before the artist just never thought to give a update like "hey, apoligies but stuff came up that has delayed youre commission, i can refund if youd like, or if youre ok, once its sorted out in a week i can get it done for you, sorry for the inconveniance" we were later contacted a month ago from the artist, saying they were open for commissions again, and sadly we had to swear off her as a potential artist after that situation, i can be leniant with a work taking 2 months, long as were provided regular updates on how things are going, but being ghosted for a month and needing to be confronted, is where i do draw a line, perhaps id be leniant if it was a artist we pay for at the end, since their not under any obligation due to the exchange of money, but this incidant was paid for in advance. doing that is a good way to permantly lose a customer,

@@TheFallinhalo Communication is key! Things come up, I get that. Perhaps it was true for the artist featured in the video. Hard to tell, honestly. I've had commissions take literal months before because of extreme life circumstances with the artist in question. They offered to give me a refund after explaining their situation, once they were able to get back in contact with me. But I said, "nah, I'll wait". Then they finally got back on their feet and were able to complete my commission soon after. But I do agree there, if money has been paid, then some transparency and accountability should be given at the very least. Sorry you've had to deal with that, I've been there too, unfortunately. Even had an artist outright go silent for well over a year after taking my money, and I've all but given up expecting anything from them by now. Like I mentioned before, I've noticed a pattern of artists who flake out and ghost people. It's usually when they take on too much, or aren't comfortable with a subject yet refuse to say "no".

I don't think they were really that backed up or not setting boundaries. Unless they had a specific guaranteed TAT then they didn't really have to tell commissioners that they were doing exams. If the guy would have left it alone after the first inquiry he probably would have gotten it within a week or so, which is a short TAT compared to most artists. They said they were willing to put in a start, and it had only been a few days since the comission came in. If the customer wanted something for a specific date he should have confirmed with the artist that it could be done before putting in the commission.

I think one thing you missed is that the artist said that they had exams, meaning that the artist was likely a high school or college student, especially given the time of year. As a college student myself, a bunch of professors will add last minute assignments and many finals are papers and either individual or group projects. There’s a good chance the reason the artist didn’t do any work on the commission was because there was a last minute schedule change, and academics are more important than furry art to the artist.

Not all customers are good customers and any business worth their salt will never say "the customer is always right". At my current job, I do the phone support for our small office, which does a lot of tech support for many of our state's agencies. One of the things we also offer is a subscription service to things such as filing background checks and requesting motor vehicle reports. There is NO way you can just accidentally sign up. This is not a Netflix subscription where you do a trial and suddenly you forget and are enrolled. The VERY FIRST THING you do when you sign up is select your plan, which has ZERO fine print and informs that there is an annual cost and a per report cost. Two of the three state agency services even require a business license to be sent in so that the company can be verified and the agency holds final approval of the account. We are not here to trick or deceive anyone. Oh, you also have to explicitly inform why you want to use the service. Again, this is part of the agency reviewing your request and deciding if they're going to approve you or not. Not long after I started the job and didn't know all the ins and outs, I had a guy raise hell at me because he felt he'd been mislead about the pricing. You know...the very pricing HE selected at the very beginning of signing up. I have never liked dealing with finance calls because of course people are touchy about their money. I asked our person in billing what should be done and she said to just cancel the account. Never do we beg or plead with people to stay. If they wish to go, we cancel with no fuss. But in this case, I don't know if I even asked for the final payment (maybe I didn't realize he had one at the time. Nowadays, I will get the final payment before closing accounts). Anywho, that was a bad call that had me in tears once he was off the phone. Thankfully, I work partly from home. I got myself together and kept it pushing and haven't had another call like that, or at least, not a call I couldn't easily pull a reverse Uno card with and calmly show where the details of their cost was given. That's one of the first things I usually check if I'll be doing finance calls (because I have worked at a call center that had no problems making us take calls for companies that mislead and deceived their users and had a ton of fine print. One of the worst jobs ever). I mention all of this because as I said before, not all customers are good customers and it can be way more beneficial to your business(and mental health) to just give that person's money back and not do business with them again than it is try to work with them. If I were the artist here, I also would've refunded the money back and if the guy still wants a commission (and had NOT been an asshole), they could order one when I'm more available. The artist did the right thing in giving the money back. Edit: Commented before finishing the video. Also agree that if the content requested was offensive, the artist shouldn't have taken the request to begin with.

I'm am artist who doesn't hate A.i or think it is ruining art for actual artists. However I've dealt with some extremely spoiled and entitled people who think because I'm self employed (I'm not this is a side job) they can mangle the price or pretend I'm asking for too much for my work.

Eh, the artists took the money to draw it, but bringing up the red flag seems more to me like saying "look, I already didn't wanna draw it but decided to do it anyway for the money. You being a dick about my schedule was just the straw that broke the camel's back." They were just to nice to say when they took the money that they thought it was kinda shitty. So if the dude's gonna drag the artist for petty reasons, the artist is gonna drag back.

I really love the "I'm my own boss, so cry about it." energy in this video, Buckley. You probably don't need me to tell you that in most cases in life or work places, you can't just block customers or your boss when the first signs of trouble come up. He could have simply told the commissioner issues came up and there would be a delay. He chose to be radio silent and threw a tantrum and ditched the customer and the money at the very first bit of push-back. And if you noticed, he didn't have time to do the art, but had plenty to do damage control on Twitter instead. That's a mega red flag by itself. But, I'm not the least surprised he did this. I've interacted with a number of artists and most of them are mentally ill, egotistical husks or both. I don't know what it is, with drawing this kind of thing, but that is the base line for these kind of people. And if his experience with artists is anything like mine, I can see why he wishes A.I. would take their jobs, which they will by the way. In terms of deadlines in general and stuff, idk that's just how any business operates. You don't make it, you lose. And most employers or customers do not care unless convinced otherwise legally in most cases. You were paid for a product or service and you chose to not do it and not be transparent about it, it is your issue not the person who commissioned it. And encase you're of the opinion that you can do and act as you please, remember you're not the only option in terms of pricing, deadlines or skill. And well sooner or later as I'm sure most artists would hope, obsolete. l0l

I'm from the artist side, and while most of the people who've commissioned me have been extremely pleasant, I've had a couple of wackos. There was this one dude who was a HORRIBLE commissioner and would literally ask for like 10 edits until the art was juuuustttt how he wanted it, asking for way more than what we charged him. And unfortunately for our circle, he was following all of us. So one person would accept his commission, get annoyed with the dude, decline future commissions he'd ask for, and he would crawl over to the next guy. So we basically had told all the other artists in private and he became soft blacklisted lol I got lucky cause he commissioned my husband and I knew who he was so I knew enough to decline him (politely) right off the bat, but some of my other friends weren't so lucky and didn't hear about it in time

oh wow this is hillarious XD while im someone who commissions artist, the guy is a moron, the artist was being nice and took the commission in the first place, its rather funny and such a weird request that they could have done and did the job. as for the ai, It won't do the confederate flag or uniform, and if it tries its terrible (reason is a character in my book is a former confederate soldier who got sucked into a ring and in modern day, and i wanted to visualize how they might look. Since i didn't want to be judged i used ai to try and get an idea of how it could look in some ways.

I also love that the commissioner specified " a Union General's hat like from Apocalypse Now"... um, first off, thats a Stetson Hat, worn by Army Cavalry Scouts (Air Cavalry, in the case of Apocalypse Now)... I earned mine in the Army and I got out as a CPL after 4 years, definitely not a "General's hat" LMAO; secondly, wrong war, that movie is about Vietnam, not the Civil War, only off by over 100 years... I guess he is right about the "hat" part though.

Man... furries are so weird. Look... do whatever you want. If you have to splooge into some weird crunchy fur suit while in the privacy of your own home, then fine do whatever I guess... but I reserve the right to remark on how weird that is... and how probably smelly as well. Makes you wonder if the internet is to blame here. Back in the day they'd have to go out into their weird shed in the forest, unbag their dead opossum head to bang, and then go back home to act like a normal, mostly adjusted human. Now though... now they have some fb group filled with their "community" of folks who splooge into crunchy fur. Again... not saying if you're into that you should be put on a list or banned from participating in society. Just saying in my opinion that is super weird. Guess as long as everyone are consenting adults then it's fine. The moment they aren't then someone needs a chair with a plug and a dial.
