Amazing analysis, I need to look back at some of my recent work to check if I subconsciously do any of these or if I should work on it.

Thank you for emphasizing the importance of good composition "even for" event photography. Assuming the basics (focus, exposure, etc.) are good enough, I believe composition, coupled with the ability to anticipate and capture key moments, is what distinguishes really great event photography. It can also be a particularly fun challenge for the event photographer who typically does not have control over the placement of objects in space and must rely on lens choice and camera position to shape the composition.

I use thirds almost as a brush stroke in a painter's way, sometimes it may be "this is the main subject", other times an important object within the image may be defined by how far away it is away from the actual thirds lines, using the power thirds to express the subject "emotionally". Foreground leading into an image to me is as important as the main subject, by representing where the subject is "from" you familiarize the viewer with what/who that subject is. I've stewed over photography for 27 years with a long break within that timeframe, picking it back up 1yr ago still using the same style I used in middle school. 20 years later I'm finding a new definition to the images I capture, just as rewarding as ever!

What a great video, Mik! It’s definitely opened my mind to using composition in a way to evoke particular emotions and feelings, as opposed to seeing compositions as “good or bad”. Love this kind of content only a seasoned professional would be able to share.

I know getting it right in camera is the first step, but having the flexibility to crop for a composition, along with dodging and burning, can up your chances for the next gig, or future clients.

Sound advice what if you get the shit slightly wrong cut a foot off? Then you have to crop a bit more to get it balanced?

when on location, how are you seeing all of this and how do you position yourself for such shots (VIP walking through a beam of light among a floor full of people)? Love your work, btw.

Great question. It all comes down to developing your skills to the point where you no longer have to think about them consciously.

Thank you for a great video 🙂 I also like the calm tone in your video and not the yelling others on KZbin do. I am doing some event photography myself. But the last times I have been really happy with my pictures, But my client can’t find any special shots they want to buy from me. I try not taking it personal, but I can’t get a clear answer on what they don’t like. This is really frustrating after have taken a couple of thousand images and working my ass off. Do you have any of this experience?
@MikMilman

Hi Kristian. No, not really. But my business model is not based on print sales. Was your gallery protected from downloading digital files? Maybe they just printed them on their own. But also, you may have just done a great job and they're just not wanting to print anything.

@@MikMilman Hi and good morning from Norway :) This is a client I can trust, and they bought my video which we did simultaneously. I give them watermarked images for review. But this also is about pushing the camera button at the right moment, which has a lot to say for the moment being photographed. Ref your exellent videos :) Maybe I should change up my business model and make a package deal for events? We`ll see. Have a great day and thank you for replying :)

Mik when people hire me for a 4 hour event shoot. A children's birthday party. How many images should I deliver? Ballpark. It will have a lot of guests. I have no clue what a reasonable number of images is
@MikMilman
@MikMilman Жыл бұрын
a 4 hour children's birthday party? That seems very long. Almost every single kids birthday party I photographed in my career lasted 2 hours. Anyway, there is no correct answer here, but my personal answer is that you shoot to maximize your coverage. I can tell you that for me this ends up being somewhere around 100-200 quality images per hour.

@@MikMilman Thanks for the response. Good god that's a lot. I'm guessing that's mostly just Lightroom edited afterwards and not including a Photoshop edit. I probably won't promise them anywhere near that number. I was thinking about 100 images total for the 4 hours 😆
