@@marcospagan9588 You can write them either way, the easiest way to input them in sibelius is 4 over 6 16th notes, but its the same rhythm as 4 over 3 eight notes. The main thing to notice is that the 4 let grouping takes up a dotted quarter note space in both cases.

I’m working on a few other videos right now. This was just meant to be a quick vid in between big releases. I might do it at some point though. Thanks for being so nice too! Most people just shout demands at me lol. Side note, I highly encourage anyone who plays a perc instrument to try transcribing! Slow the video down, take your time, and see what you can do! I’m one guy with a full time, non-music related job. I wish I could do this full time for y’all, but life is expensive…

Can someone explain what the 4 on top of 16th notes means like in measure 7?
@CrowT
@CrowT 10 ай бұрын
It has been a while, but did you ever figure it out? You have a bar of 3/4 and you are trying to fit 8 16th notes in there evenly. So you are playing four 16th notes in the place of three 8th notes....if that makes any sense lol. These crazy DCI type polyrhythms can be tricky lol. Edit: If you scroll down somebody answered it pretty elaborately in a comment thread. Happy drumming🤘

Can someone explain to me how to play the notes with the 4 on top or how to count them
@Gosa02
@Gosa02 2 жыл бұрын
I’ll take a stab. It is 8 32nd notes played over 3 8th notes. This is the same has 4 16th notes over 3 8th notes or, 4:3.

Idk if you're still interested, but the 4 is meant to symbolize 4:3. Just in case you're already lost, think of it as a ratio (gotta love math!). An eighth note triplet is actually a 3:2 ratio because you're fitting three notes in two eighth note's worth of space. Writers just omit the second half of the ratio because of how common the tuplet is. You can actually see ratios used for the 5:3 (meaning you need to play five notes in the space of three eighth notes) quintuplets in bars 21 and 22 (if you're wondering why he wrote out this ratio and not the others, it's because 5:4 quintuplets are the more common variation. If you only see a 5 over a rhythm, like in beat two of measure four, it is safe to assume that it represents a 5:4 tuplet). Alright, back to 4:3. So, in measure seven, there are two 4:3 tuplets that split the 3/4 bar in half. Therefore every 4:3 tuplet takes up the space of a dotted quarter note. A dotted quarter note normally has three eighth notes, but this time you're going to fit four of them. The visual formatting is weird because of the music notation software he used, but don't let that confuse you. Just fit four notes where there should be three (it should feel the same as changing from triplets to sixteenth notes). I have yet to find a good way to count them and instead think of them either in relation to the downbeat or as a ratio with the rhythms surrounding it. One way to practice 4:3 is to play a bar of triplets and then a bar of sixteenth notes. Your hand speed change is the same ratio as going from eighth notes to 4:3 eighth notes (it just won't line up as neatly with the metronome. Another idea would be to play a bar of straight sixteenth notes in 3/4 while accenting every third note and then a bar of 4:3 sixteenth notes, accenting every fourth note. The accents will not change in relation to the metronome. Hope this helped!
